The reasons Canada didn't defeat Slovakia by 5 goals plus are: 1. The Slovakia goalie made some spectacular saves & also luck was on his side. 2. For Slovakia to win tonight, they needed to execute their game plan flawlessly, and they needed a metric crap-ton of luck. Both things happened, and they came closer to beating Canada than a U20 Slovakian team has ever come. They poured everything they had into that game and it was almost enough. They are due major props here. Also, note that this isn't the Canada team that was just starting out the tournament, and not clicking together so well yet, with line combinations yet to be figured out, etc. (i.e. the team their Czech brethren managed to beat). This was Canada playing at their best. And you could see the frustration on the faces of the Canadian players. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard, and Slovakia was putting in the work (while Canada was working hard, they weren't necessarily working SMART, wasting quite a few OZ possessions on low-percentage plays). It finally took both hard work AND talent to win the game though, with Bedard putting the team on his back and ending it in one of the most amazing ways possible. This is _almost_ better than Mason McTavish sweeping the puck out of the air, saving a sure Finnish OT winner in the gold medal game this past summer. Almost. Anyway, congrats to the nation of Slovakia! Your hockey players made millions of Canadians _extremely nervous_ tonight, and normally, only 4 nations are able to pull that off (USA, Finland, Sweden and Russia). Also, remember to look on the bright side - just eight players (Patrik Andrisík, Róbert Bačo, Šimon Bečár, Pavol Funtek, Šimon Groch, Matej Marinov, Libor Nemec and Marcel Štefančík) are ineligible to return for the 2024 tournament. So provided their NHL teams don't hold them out, 14 players (including the goalie who played the game of his life, Adam Gajan, and also tournament standouts Dalibor Dvorský, Filip Mešár, Šimon Nemec, Servác Petrovský and Adam Sýkora) could be coming back to try and slay the giants of the hockey world once more.
This was such a damn good goal, Bedard really carried us home here. Honestly, I feel really bad for that poor goalie, that man absolutely deserved to win. Slovakia's defenders, not so much, allowing SIXTY ONE shots on net is just fucking disgraceful, especially since that's not counting the MULTIPLE shots that bounced off the posts, went over the net, and that one that somehow boomeranged through the crease. Slovakia's goalie is absolutely legendary, the fact that he didn't win MVP was insane. This was honestly the best hockey game I've ever seen, so glad I caught it live.
That was ruthless! Skated around them like they were pylons.
