  • Do you love juicy, sweet, just-picked blueberries from your own bushes? Not sure how to keep them performing at their best? Join WSU Extension Clark County Master Gardeners for a workshop on blueberry pruning. We’ll view a couple of short videos on blueberry pruning basics: when to prune, choosing which canes to cut, and where to cut them. We’ll discuss tools, garden sanitation, and how pruning is part of a sustainable and organic approach to blueberry plant care. Presenters will also cover the basics on plant nutrition and discuss some of the common pests and diseases. This webinar is put on in collaboration with Clark County Public Health - Solid Waste Outreach.

    Good, very usable information. I have found (accidently) that when catnip is allowed to grow around my field/yard the jays, robins and especially the starlings, quit coming around (but see more Chickadees and Towhees)

    what kind of netting can I use to protect my berries. I have used just about every type and those catbirds peck holes in every type of netting. squirrels chew holes. I don't know of any netting that will stop them.

    Every time we find a variety that is less picky about the soil Ph .It seems that people controlling things makes it not allowed to several states. Why is this.? My guess is large producers are able to lobby for these rules. There is one called Vera , But then try to order some for my garden they say they can not send to my state. But that is ok because I have a friend the next state over that will order them for me.

    Is very good information what u guys putting up there but what about soil. I know blueberries need acidic soils. Where I live there not acidic soils. What is the type os soil . I have a good clay soil with sulphur that am preparing from now so I can transplant in fall or spring. What else u consider I need to amend my clay soil. Or what is another mix that I can used

    • @Adrian-cw8yu
      @Adrian-cw8yu Před rokem +1

      Plant in large pots/containers, it makes life a lot easier, unless you have great acidic soil and land etc. The mix I use is 40% peat moss, 40% ericaceous compost and 20% pine bark mulch all mixed together, all acidic, makes for a good airy well draining roughly 4.5-5.5 PH mix, the plants love it and I water with a blueberry fertilizer a few times a year.

    I took some cuttings from Rabbiteyes and they successfully took but after a year in a pot I have one central 'trunk' as it were with quite a few canes branching up from the one central point. There are no other canes coming up from the crown. Should I remove all but three or so of the current canes and cut those back by half? Will this force the bush to push new canes from the roots under the soil and thus widen the crown? The plants are still in felt pots approx 12" round by 12" deep. I’m going to put them in 21 Gal pots this winter. The new pots are 22 in dia by 17 in deep

    • @Adrian-cw8yu
      @Adrian-cw8yu Před rokem

      It might take a few years to send up new shoots, don't prune anything for a few years, apart from dead wood.

    • @Adrian-cw8yu
      @Adrian-cw8yu Před rokem

      And your new 22" pots will be good enough for a fully grown plant, a lot of room there.

    GOOD NIGHT,...
    You have sayed that of course the Blueberry Plants Need pH 4.5 -5.5...but How could they take the Nutrients( macro and Micro) under such acid soil Conditions If the optimal pH is between 5.5 -6.5 for UPTAKE OF THEM...
    Don´t they present some nutritional deficiency specially NPK mostly?
    And why don´t under such Native Conditions?
    thank you very much

    • @jhrobbins97
      @jhrobbins97 Před 2 lety

      They actually need acidic soil to uptake nutrients. Different plants can have different ph requirements

    I am here in Pennsylvania and called about Asian Jumping Worm control and eradication my county extension office several numbers and different times and never got an answer from anyone there ever. Maybe they all have bat flu since that seems to be the standard answer these days. Experts are not experts.
