I am on my third rescued German Shepherd and are the best dogs. Sasha, the second one was badly abused and caged and starved for the first 3 years of her life. She does not how to interact with other dogs but is the sweatest GSD I have owned. We love them all to bits.

We got our female GSD last year at 7 months old. She had separation anxiety and barely socialised. She was a Covid puppy, born Jan 2020.
We have to get her reactivity trained, she went to her classes. Last year, it took weeks to fix her separation anxiety, now she is okay. Reactivity still happens but 90% better. She is still slow to warm up with new faces and new dogs. She plays with dogs she knows and loves it when we go for a drive to visit other family and dog friends. Very cuddly and definitely a velcro dog. Dog obedience is better with distractions.

I was raised with German shepards as my dad loved them, shepards are easy to own, a bit of discipline alot of love and alot of affection and they will reward you with the greatest experience of your life.

I love the Breed, I had one in the early 90s, as she pasted away it took me many years to get another on. Now my husband and I are retired and have enough land for them to run and play on. We have 5 of them, loving life even though everything in the world is falling.

If you can afford that many, have the space, land, and time for them, that's wonderful. My veterinarian has nine of them as family members. They all sleep and come indoors whenever they want too. My veterinarian also has a house on lots of acreage.

My family has had 2 German Shepherds. They are very loyal and smart! But as my family has gotten older, they got more easy going breeds like schnauzers and French Bulldogs. My dad and my aunt's don't have the same energy like they did in their 20's.

why don’t people just rescue their german shepherd if they can’t afford to buy from a breeder? it’s so much better ethically and it’s a lot cheaper. i rescued my german shepherd and he is my best friend. shepherds are one of the highest breeds to be put up for adoption.

I found what the vet said was a 1.5 to 2 year old male. He had a bad ear infection and was rather aloof at first and barked at me. Someone dumped him in some holler town in Vinton county Ohio. He has been with me and his sister pit bull and brother lab for 5 months now. Lab had no interest in being alpha so there were zero issues. Great with my two boys and loves his new life. He got beaten in his previous life and x rays recently a bad foot break that healed wrong. He seems well adjusted and is on a joint based diet Should pay off later in life I am hoping. He is however rather protective. Extraordinary protective.

I'm answering as I go along. I have pet insurance for my dog and cat. You have to put the money up first, then you file a claim and they reimburse you. If I don't have the cash, I have a credit card called care credit. Alot of people don't realize that it's not cheap to have a pet. I certainly didn't. I was young and clueless. I just knew I wanted a puppy and it had to be a GSD. NO REGRETS. Best decision I ever made 🤗

We had two German Shepherds who've lived to 12 and 13 yrs. of age. First, we went with them for dog training classes which was so worth it. We bought a place outside the city with eighty acres. They were in doggy heaven with all that space they had with us to run, play and explore freely. They had access to the indoors of the house whenever they wanted - and of course slept indoors on their own comfy beds. IMO, these dogs need people who can stimulate them with adequate daily exercise like running around (be careful when they're in their senior years though), throwing lots of frisbees, etc. for them - and a life like Lucy. These are high energy dogs and need a high energy dog parent. So if you're more of a layed back type who doesn't like to be outside exercising and taking your German Shepherd out daily (and not just walking), get a little dog or cat - or pet rock 😉. Otherwise you may end up with problems with the German Shepherd out of their frustration and lack of stimulation. And you couldn't blame them. And better hope you like lots of dog hair!

The one and ONLY thing I dislike is the shedding. Even with going to the groomers and being brushed at home with the furminator. Oh and the fact that dogs don't live longer. My baby is already 9. It goes by so fast 😭

All the dogs I have are great but, my German Shepherd Lucie was my best friend and I was blessed to have her in my life for 13 wonderful years. My husband called her shed feathers 🪶 miss her every day. She was the runt of the litter of 13 $150 to purchase the love of my life. Fortunately no expense vet bills

I have a German Shepherd and I live in a house that is 320 square feet. Plus people forget that there is a lot of German Shepherds that are up for adoption. Just check out for rescue groups in your are. Plus find out how people rate these German Shepherd rescue groups. I feel Lucy is thinking I should do a video on what it Intel's having a human that sheds and blames their dogs. Haha. I thought she was about to fall over because she was falling asleep while sitting there. Lucy lane queen of the east side.

Hey could you tell me how do I cool down my German Shepherd during the afternoon time because it gets really hot here in Goa(Throughout the year but Specially in the summers) And he just can't seem to find a spot to sleep at home. He just tries to find a cool spot in the house to sleep but gets uncomfortable and changes spots after every few minutes.

I would just like to add the thought of going through a rescue group to acquire a German Shepherd/Alsatian dog. Especially if there is a dedicated German Shepherd/Alsatian rescue group in your immediate area. I worked for a very good one in Northern California for more than 8 years. I can tell you that if your patient and have good communication with a decent group you can find an excellent dog even a puppy if that is one of your requirements and it won’t cost you $3000.00. Be prepared to prove to them your competence and ability to home one responsibly. There are many good reasons to go this route not the least of which is providing a good home to a dog that needs one! They can be a great partner in finding resources on training, nutrition, finding good veterinary care etc even for helping with veterinary costs in some situations. Another reason is it might be a good thing to try foster parenting a GS/Alsatian dog first to see how well it works for your situation. Many of these groups are in need of foster homes for some of their dogs and will cover the costs of food veterinary care and most of the other costs associated with the foster care of their dogs. In my particular group they also allowed the foster parents to have the last word when it came to placing the dog in a new home! Also they committed to the dog for the entire life of the dog. Meaning that no matter what happened if the dog needed to be rehomed for any reason it was to come back to the rescue group never to a shelter or local animal control! They made you sign a contract in that regard with every adoption. They also took great care in making sure that you were matched up to the right dog in so far as temperament was concerned, energy level, prey drive even likely size etc.

I’ll take the opposite direction from you. I think your average person should not own a GSD, and only very skilled people that have trained a dominant breed in the past should get a working line GSD. There are currently 1000 GSDs in shelters in the US waiting for adoption, many won’t be that lucky. Why are they in shelters? Because your average person does not have the leadership skills it takes to own this type of dog. Because your average person doesn’t realize how much it costs, the time required to train, and the exercise these dogs need. I have a Shiloh Shepherd and a rescued husky (another dog your average lazy American shouldn’t get) I get notifications daily of new huskies up for adoption. Yes, I’m E average person should just get a plant, then maybe a fish. Ok ,I’m cynical.
