  • Hey everyone
    Today we're taking a look at the Ptychochromis grandidieri or East Coast Malagasy Gold Cichlid.
    So Here we have a truly remarkable fish. This is a fish found only in the rivers and coastal estuaries of central madagascar. Not only is this fish said to be a predominantly brackish fish, but all of the current reports I could find, said this fish only spawns in brackish waters. Interestingly, this is also the only fish within the entire Genus- that is brackish or salt tolerant at all.
    SO the WHOLE reason we are getting to learn about this increasingly rare and charming cichlid- is because my buddy, Dan (the owner of the fish store, in Seattle - managed to spawn this pair in our local tap water which has a ph of 6.8 and a tds of 10 to 30ppm... so, not hard water, not alkaline and certainly not Brackish.

    This cichlid just might be my unicorn. I could not stop looking at their eyes. The facial structure is such that there is a distinct optical illusion of eyebrows even though it is a distortion through the eyeballs. Gives them a uniquely intelligent appearance. Thanks Alex 👍👍

    given enough time, organism populations should be able to adapt to whatever limiting factors are in their environment. Good job to the breeders. Hopefully, the future generations' immunity will also keep up with aquarium keeping conditions.

    A brackish madagascar cichlid? Neat fish, the olive coloration is pretty nice but that's a bit big for tank size for me atm. Sad because I'm always looking for true brackish species but can't upgrade from 20gal atm and they have to play nice with the celebese rainbows and guppies already in the tank ^^' think a pair of molly sized fish would be nice for centerpiece, but definitely not molly breeding behavior lmao, I already have plenty of guppies to feed atm ^^'

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 2 lety +1

      Oh check out the pseudomogils that are brackish...or just about any livebearers too :)

    • @discordiacreates6669
      @discordiacreates6669 Před 2 lety +1

      @@Fishtory wasn't aware of any psudomagils that were brackish, I'll definitely have to look since I've really only seen one thing at our LFS that wasn't a livebearer and the internet claimed was true brackish. Sadly I can't say what it was because it was last year and the only time in my life I've ever seen them, so idk why but it was definitely a one off sale

    My man. I need help xD. I added aquasoil to my main high tech highly planted 200L tank last month. My pH now is around 6.3 and since I keep snails i wanted to raise it to at least 6.8. I already tried using that calclcium for turtles, but it didnt work, i only change my gH level to 8dH. What can i do to change that? I am gonna introduce 10 malawa shrimp to that tank and Im a bit afraid.
    Regards from portugal

    • @Fishtory
      @Fishtory  Před 2 lety

      So you'll wanna add crushed coral and or shells... about a half a cup per 10g of water I'd guess (for a 7.0-7.3) ish adjustment :)

  • @HappyOne2017
    @HappyOne2017 Před 2 lety +1

    Which are easier to breed: Chilli and Explanation Point Rasboras, Green Neon Tetras or Red Neon Blue-eyed Rainbows? I just found a tiny fry in their tank and it's too small to tell what kind of nano fish it is..... 🤔

    • @HappyOne2017
      @HappyOne2017 Před 2 lety

      @@Fishtory I might try making a spawning mop for them but right now I just have a huge pile of Java moss in there for them to spawn in
