"STORY! STORY IS EVERYTHING"
My character doesn't even have a name yet-
I relate to this on a deeper level than I care to admit
They probably have a name now, and maybe you were just joking, but a character might actually need a story more than they need a name. * shrugs *
I'm sure you've seen amazing art of characters where you didn't know what their names were and didn't care because they were so inspirational.
Then you probably also saw a picture an overexcited kid showed you of their OC that was in no way original OR appealing, BUT THEY HAD A NAME, and you were like. "okay what's their name? GOOD. Now I know what the first name I forget today will be!" because you didn't care.
Bro in my case I literally have backstories for all my ocs but I don't know how to name or design them :( like they all look so simple and idk how to fix that without making them overloaded yk
+Alguien Misterioso
Well don't forget that simple doesn't mean bad! A character that personifies a simple idea super clearly is a really good idea! Then, if they seem clichéd add in the idea(s) that separates them from the cliché.
IRL we try to look at people and tell what their story is, and although we're usually wrong, for a character, well, if you've got their backstory all figured out, you want to show as much of that backstory as you can in their design. And you can even if you can't show what they are, you can still at least show what they ARE NOT, so at least we get something about them by looking.
What kinds of clothes do people with their backstory in their location wear? Styles of clothes and hair, and presence of wear. And also, don't forget personality! Also, for better or for worse, people see certain traits and... well... think certain things... so you may want to play around with ideas in peoples' heads. If you have a lot of OCs, then several of them probably represent ideas, and if they don't they probably should, and if your characters have core ideas they are about, then that can tell you a lot about what kinds of shapes or symbols to use. And don't forget learning a little realism if you haven't already, because real life provides real good inspiration and instruction for fantasy and reality!
One thing I recently learned about designing characters when you don't know how they should look is to start with a general idea, draw a superfast crappy drawing of them, decide if I went the right direction with that or not, then draw them again in a different way. And most of the time I'll decide I want to focus on one part of them also to figure out what to do with that part. I think pros usually do lots and lots of concepts before they ever settle on what a character should look like even at the beginning, and the key to doing all that is that all the concepts are really rushed drawings because you're just kinda drawing the CONCEPT, to see if you like where the idea is going, and then when you get a couple you like you go explore those deeper, and then after that that's when you start slowing down and making less crappy sketches. XD
Could you give me some examples of the kinds of OCs you have that you're having trouble designing? I'm not that good but design is what I'm learning now and it sounds like it might be fun to try to help you get starter ideas for some of them! :) Since I'm not that good I'm sure whatever idea you get after will be way better than mine too so why not? :D
@@BologneyT Well first of all thank you sm for helping it means a lot :"D also english isn't my native language so sorry if I talk weird or something. Umm im going to try to resume everything lol so the "plot" is about travelling in time in general, and there's this person that controls like the "time machine". Ok so the thing is that in the future, the Earth would be fucked up beacuse of world war 3 and pollution and all that stuff and is going to extint, and then there would be like an army (who are the bad guys) leaded by a man (this is one of the characters that idk how to design or name xd), and this man discovers that they can travel in time with that time machine, so his plan is to invade other past eras so they can survive, but that would destroy the history of the Earth and it would be a chaos, so that person who controls the time needs some help but has to trust just a few people that could actually help her.
Ok so the main characters are people that did something wrong or want to change something from the past in general for personal reasons, so that girl who controls the time (I can't think of a name that fits her lmao but she does have a design) offers them the possibility of travel in time in exchange of helping her. Well she basically blackmails them (is that the correct word?).
And the characters that idk how to name or design are some the ones that she offers the time travelling but I'm not sure if you want to know all their back stories and the things they want to change and all that stuff so I will shut up now by the moment đâalso u don't need to reply if you dont want to I would be lazy at replying this too lmao

Don't worry. Tatsumi's alive in the manga.
peachii artist donât like hearing that their OCs looks like another character...
Yeezzz
I think maybe instead of "Become your character" it should be "Be passionate about your character". I feel that if people tie their sense of self too closely to their characters it makes it harder for them to notice any flaws or receive criticism. If you *are* your character any critiques your character receives feel like attacks against you as a person.
Okuyasu Higashikata I understand those things yes, I just feel like âbecome your characterâ is advice that can easily be misinterpreted by beginners who this video is aimed at.
Becoming your character is different from being passionate about them, though. Passion and understanding aren't the same thing.
Trying to walk in someone else's shoes is a great way to get understanding and learn empathy for IRL people.
You make a good point, though.
People who can't take criticism, though, need to either learn to take it or simply stop inviting it.
i'm pretty sure you should become the character. i love acting out my character, thinking from time to time "i wonder what my character would do if this happened to them?" i write down those notes and revisit them a day later with a fresh eye and mind. This helps me have a deep understanding of them as well as an objective view. plus, you will need to take criticism for both your art and you if you want to improve anyhow.
It's weird I have 3 main ocs and I'm extremely attached to one of them and they genuinely feel like a real person that I'm friends with, and I love my other characters so hopefully over time it'll be the same with them
Then you have creators like me. I recently copied my own character's haircut (despite him being very masculine and me not being a guy) literally just because (a) it seemed manageable, and (b) he's my favorite OC at the moment and it sounded kind of fun to get an idea how it feels to have that hairstyle to get even more into his head.
At the same time, I am so afraid that when I finally start making content to share of the story he's part of, people will not criticize him _enough_ lmao. I adore him but he is deeply flawed and needs to be called out on his shit sometimes. My opposite fear is that some people will see him as irredeemable, but I deeply hope I can manage to convey that he is not and will never be a particularly Good Person but is still capable of learning to treat other people decently regardless. đ
Congrats on 1.1 mil!! Youâve helped and inspired me a lot on my journey so far!! Thank you! :DD
Omg he hearted!! Nice!!
Oh, hi! Didnât expect to see you here...

@@RossDraws I have important question there, 'Lena' character design in '86' anime look too similar to Esdeath in 'Akame ga kill', so how come nobody mention about that, or importanly, get copy striked ? (that the main problem I try to get around so my character design don't end up get copy strike by other greedy guy there)
My biggest issue is coming up with an outfit for my character, I try to use references as much as possible but I still struggle with it a lot, idk if thereâs a specific way to learn
Oh, usually what I do is take inspiration from non- clothing items. For example, a queen character may be based off of a particularly glamourous handbag. A theif may be based off of a weird looking tree you saw that one time. The possibilities are endless with so much stuff in the world. I sincerely hopes this helps you out!đ

So like every other female character
Every woman I've ever had a crush on fits this description.
EVERYONE is adding freckles to their characters, now. For a change sure, but they're overrated, imo. Like those people who put fake freckles, on themselves. With scarring, it depends on the setting. If there's some form of healing magic, or abnormal regeneration, that ends up not leaving scars behind, then yeah (idk much about this artist's story, but it looks fantasy based).
Agree with the similarity though, the redhead's hairstyle reminds me of the queen's, ngl

Does anyone have any other tips you use for drawing your own characters? I'm thinking about making my channel a sort of art class where there aren't any teachers, just us classmates trying to help each other become better artists.
Don't make it to detail
@@xipeichen3906 ah yeah, that is a good piece of advice especially if you are just starting to draw or you don't know where you are going with the character.
Use reality to generate fantasy.
Make multiple "bases" for the character you want to draw, that way you can test out different hair, clothes/costumes, colors, etc. and see which one looks the best.
What kind of class mates? Like the audience or actual members of the channel? You don't have to answer if you don't want to.
I love how Ross constantly seems surprised by the things he creates, its so wholesome

That's the problem because all of his female characters have the same face and body ^^' quite ironic when he talks about the importance of shape variety
He had same-face syndrome. All his characters have similar features. But it's still nice
Man, I can't wait for you book. You've come such a long way, I feel so proud in some strange way.
Becoming your character is a nice way of adding more authenticity to characters and making them feel believable
I'm honestly getting really emotional for what you are putting yourself into. It's a very beautiful thing that you follow your passions.
Hi
the color choice doesn't make her look that deadly in my opinion. She looks peacefull and calm, sure, royal and elegent, that did work, but deadly, not so much
that's what I thought about too! Probably she would look more deadly if he used fiery colors
I feel like the blue helps her have that more elegant look. It's a stable color. Like, if you'd die by her hand, you'd die both a planned and quick death. Red encases aggression. It just wouldn't be the same
The black does say it a bit
@@DONNY_G1028 Yes, and no, in my opinion
yes, because death is represented with black, and i see your thinking
no, because there is a loot of white to counter balance and nullify it. Also, the blue doesn't help. A point of orange to contrast with the blue would be helpfull to have the deadly point, on the claw as an highlight for exemple. Orange is the contrast of blue, and not as agressive as red.
To throw you off your rhythm
6:45 i just felt my brain melting and the only thing i could think was "damn shes gorgeous"

Thanks you Ross!!, You really poked my brain with a stick this time! That was great help, and content! đ
YES I love this so much! I'm designing characters for my class and you're gonna guide me to graduation haha. Lyris is so cool and beautiful!
I don't know if it was just your artwork, your insightful tips, or just your adorable use of voices in sound effects alongside your examples but I just had to subscribe by the end of this video and I also never do by only one video alone.
I'm also crafting my own graphic novel and you had so many points that I truly believe in. I believe there's so much I can learn from your example and I am so in thrall to learn more about your world.
I watch and rewatch your videos so much it's insane
Right now I'm trying to design a villain for a comic that I'm working on and he's literally just shapes. So when you told me to draw that character using basic shapes nothing changed. And I mean nothing.
But I was going for a simple design so I guess that works.
Thanks to tabletop RPG's I can really grasp how the character behaves, speaks and deal with different situations. Plan to illustrate them with the sessions I had in mind.
I can't hide my smile when you talk about your book cuz you look so happy >< it makes me happy too! I hope your book will succeed đ *sending loveđđđ*
Thank you Ross for your great advice! I love that break down these concepts in a way that's simple to understand â€đ
I like a lot your character designs, ross đâ€ïž aaa I wanna do that! so cooool!! đđđđ
As much as I love Ross and his art, Iâd very much appreciate if he acknowledged in his female design that there is more than one body type. đ
I think that he just really likes that body type. I always try to draw different body types and (sadly) end up with the one I like the most. That's probably a BIG problem with all artists hahaha
Shut up. He can draw what he wants.
@@AA-pv6mi no one said he couldn't, it's basic criticism to say artists no matter how good should learn or at least practice with different body shapes, faces and expressions, and like with all criticism you can ignore it and not apply it to your craft, it's a simple advice to make even more distinguished characters
Tsundere arts Nobody has to do anything. Who even are you to start telling people what to do? Youâre the type of entitled shit to bash Sakimichan.earning different body types that you wonât add into your art is not a fundamental. Itâs not mandatory.
@@AA-pv6mi ok lol calm down (I am not meaning to sound rude you just sound a bit worked up) and as an artist myself (not as good as him but still a artist) I understand if he won't because he just doesn't want to post art he is self conscious in and maybe in his perspective it isn't good enough or he just likes drawing that body type better, and it is ok but it's just generally more useful to have the knowledge and to be able to do more things it generally helps your art over all. As a person with a different body type then the ones he usually draws I would really appreciate it if he could also include different body types just so people that watch his videos can maybe feel a bit more included. Also we aren't like ordering him to do it or anything we are just saying we would appreciate it if he does it
