13. Working Meditation: an introduction by brother Phap Luu

    How is your approach to work? How do you feel at work? How many hours a week do you work? Are you relaxed, enjoying your physical work, your mental work, your computer work, your presence in a meeting, or are you restless and running all the time, trying to complete your endless tasks? Are you fullfilled by your work, or is it something to get over with to enjoy your free time?
    In short: is your work a source of happiness and wellbeing, or a time of stress, conflicts, or even dullness?
    In this video Brother Phap Luu reflects on the practice of working meditation, and shares very practical tips on how to bring awareness to your body, to your spoken words, and to your thoughts, while working.
    The video opens with this - I would say - revolutionary text:
    “Practice mindfulness as you work. Maintain peace, joy and freedom while you work and do not be carried away by the job or your non stop thinking. Organize your task so you can complete the work in a relaxed manner, without hurrying. When you notice your mind starting to worry about what needs to be done after the current task, immediately bring your attention back to the present moment. Do not run or walk in a hurry. Always practice walking meditation, showing your inner stability and freedom - even if you are only taking two or three steps.”
    Like any other meditation, working meditation is a training, you train to come back to the present moment, and see what is going on, in your body, in your thoughts and the words that are spoken. Becoming fully aware of what is happening, you have a choice, to continue … or to change.
    I invite you to watch this video until the very end, where Brother Phap Luu answers two important questions: about ‘the fruit of work’ and ‘the amount of work’. I am quite sure that if you invest 27 minutes of your precious time today, it can bring enlightenment to whatever you do, and transform a life time of work, and even change your carreer.
    Work can be a joy, and a play.
