The game was phenomenal on the SNES, and with these upgrades it will be even more phenomenal, because it hasn’t deviated from the original source.

When a company remakes a game and it is different. People complain that they wanted the exact og game but updated graphics. If they remake the game exactly as the og. People complain calling it lazy. If they remaster it people complain because they wanted better graphics. If they just port the game. No changes. People call it a lazy cash grab. Seems like you can never make anyone happy.

Honestly, an 83 overall score seems like a decent game to me. Maybe not game of the year, but something that should be enjoyable if you are into the type of game.

I think an 83 is a pretty fair score honestly. Id argue when the game came out originally it was a 90+ for sure, but times and standards change how things from the past are judged. The score dropped. Is what it is. The price and game are judged differently today then it was then.
83 is a really good score it’s when it’s drops into the early 70s and 60s and below is when people should start worrying so many gamers on the Internet have really unrealistic standards for a game scores and the games themselves 🤦♂️

If it is a 100% remake of the original, it is literally one of the best JRPGs ever made. You should play it, it's great!
I'm a huge SM RPG fan, and if you are too, you will be disappointed... I'm overleveled even though I skipped the entire [spoiler]ship since I know the password[/spoiler]. I remember having to use a bunch of mushroom and pick me up. I one shotted the [spoiler]Axem Warrior[/spoiler] and [spoiler]Smithy swords[/spoiler], and i'm pretty sure I had to retry them in the OG games. I wish we could turn off the new combat features which render that combat way too easy. and i feel like they changed the XP curve (hence why im overleveled).

There are 2 difficulty mode : Breezy and Normal, and i'm playing on Normal (breezy is the easiest mode).

@@JIreland1992 I avoid some, fight other to not be underlevel, but I dont actively grind. No boss posed any problems, they were pretty much a breeze.

Well maybe I fought too much alone the way, but I've played through the OG 3 or 4 times (last time being when SNES Classic released), and I don't remember the game being that easy. Maybe I just got better and use my magic more strategicaly. don't know.
Super Mario RPG on Switch is definitely NOT a disappointment and anyone who says that loses all creditability.

80+ is pretty darn good for a jrpg. Especially a turn based one.
83 seems about right considering it’s been getting mostly 8’s out of 10 with the occasional 9 here and there. Which is about what I was expecting.

That's a really good point and something I have thought about myself whilst checking out Metacritic. If a publication chooses a 1-5 scale a 3 is normally considered to mean 'good'. But if you'd take that and multiply by 2 in order to get a 1-10 scale then you get a 6 instead. Which is not normally considered to match 'good', that's normally reserved for a 7. So really valid point!
83 is a great score for a faithfully remade game from 1996. And by the way, it seems like a lot of people out there (not me) think that RPGs tend to be way too long nowadays. This game is full of charm, fun, and does not take 60 hours to complete. But it also is a product of its time. So I think 83 is really fair. IMO, it's the second best game ever made that bears Mario's name (Galaxy being #1). I would rate it a perfect 10, but it's a sentimental all-time classic for me.

Too bad they remade super star saga on the 3ds though it could have looked this good on the switch and alpha dream would still be in business.

I played the original Mario rpg when I was a kid and it's an amazing game especially for its time. I always felt they should have done a big proper sequel.
If this game is successful enough we may still get that sequel. I'm 36now and like you I loved this game as a kid and I e always wanted a sequel
The Mario & Luigi series was meant to be a successor. Though I always preferred RPG's battle mechanics overall. Hopefully they continue on with this style.

Why is it so hard for people to know the diffetence between a remake and a remaster?
I adore this game. I beat it several times before I could even read (I had a hard time getting passed the sunkin ship part with the riddle, so my mom helped me).Then played it again when it came out on the Wii shop and noticed the stellar writing. Im excited to give the game another go.
I haven't truly played SM RPG as a kid I got bored because I was into platformers & fighting games. I'm glad to get a chance to play it in my adulthood. I put it on my snes mini but I couldn't bring myself to play it lol I'm extremely excited to pick up my preorder.
A remaster means they added new code over the previously existing code, but they did use some of the original. This is a remake not a remaster
Nintendo Life saying this is how a remake should be done, yet hasn't really looked at some of the multi platform remakes lately that have been really good on the switch and have even added more.
It was a solid game back in the day & I think people will enjoy this version if they are willing to try it

The fact that this is in 3d and not 2d, in of itself, makes this a remake.

People need to just play the game make the choice, people care too much about these things. Every gamer on youtube need to make a rating website where the people can vote and rate the game, or even just the CZcamsrs.

Well a remaster is just the game but polished up a bit. Super Mario RPG is a remake, hence the game was remade with better graphics and sound and not just the same graphics up ressed

The game is better in almost every way.. I was used to certain sounds, which got removed.
I wouldnt play it if it was added to SNES online collection because i rather play a game with better graphics. And i have played the OG Super Mario RPG the graphics are very distracting.
The fact that 83 is considered a bad score is absolutely boggling to me.
The biggest issue is the price.
It's a pretty average price.
This game is absolute all-time classic gem that has a broad enough of an appeal to even interest some that aren't necessarily that big on RPGs and it definitely deserves better than an 83. I suspect user scores will be higher. Remember when the new Mario movie came out and the so-called critics were kind of mixed on it but most consumers were significantly higher on it?
How is it to a 2023 standards, without a nice classic memory of the first release. Can it hold its own.

It's intriguing that the Mario RPG and Persona Tactica both release on the same day for the Switch, especially considering that RGT's sponsor is Atlus.
I feel the scoring for a lot of them don't really match up with the actual review. Hearing words like " Excellent remake" but giving it a 70 doesn't really make a whole lot of sense.
Most of traditional games 'journalism" has lost their goddammed minds. A lot of the reviews I've seen have criticicized it for being a SNES RPG. What did they expect? A complete rewrite.
This is one of the only games from childhood that I've done a full playthrough multiple times in the years since! I'm psyched to see it with a squeaky clean polish.

It's not bad game, been playing since Monday on the PC and have it pre-ordered on the switch as well.
Too many put too much stock in critics in general. They can be good to tell if you if a game is broke, but I find no one has the same tastes in games I do.
I am not a big switch player but man i got this day one, today (17th in Australia) and yeah as soon as i am done with Spiderman 2 on the PS5, i am loading this one up.
I went through so many hoops as a PAL super nes gamer in the 90s where even my imported US copy did not work properly because of the insane region protection, and after a while i finally got a US super NES and enjoyed it a lot.
The fact this has not deviated much from the original makes me look forward to it even more. I am sure ill be toggling the soundtrack choices though. Big deal about what gaming sites or other people say, if you like or love something, you like or love something and you should never let anyone or any media outlet diminish that.
After that it will be on to Star Ocean 2. What a great time to be gaming.

If you never played the OG I would try and play through it first before this comes out. As a kid I was absolutely blown away and it still holds up. Can’t wait to replay an updated version

Overall it's a great faithful remake so far as far as I have gotten. Nice touch you can use the original music. Sucks you can't have all classic sounds like in the cutscenes the lighting strike on the opening to Bowers castle isant as good as the classic sound. I do feel like it should be a little cheeper 79.99$ CAN is to much should be like 59.99-69.99. when compared to games like Baldurs gate 3 ECT. But still a good remake.
Sadly all first party Nintendo games are outrageously expensive.
It's still the same game from 1996, which was never close to being among the best RPGs ever made; but it was and still is an amazing game. A historically important game once thought impossible to ever make a return is now here, in 2023 full 4 generations after its original release. No matter the score, just the fact that this game exists is huge and makes it a must have.
I never go by meta critic I always watch gameplay i feel like that's the only way to truly get a feel of how much a game is compatible with you as a player

Im probably leaning towards Wonder as a Christmas game over Mario RPG, but it depends if I can find Wonder used for relatively cheap.

Only way I will get this is if they patch the awful framerate drops and we all know Nintendo is unlikely to do it as their main audience is casuals that dont care or are not bothered by performance. When you have games like DK Tropical Freeze, Metroid Prime/Dread, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Velocity 2X, Streets of Rage 4 that not only look incredible but run at a locked 60 fps in handheld mode and push more particles per frame you have to wonder what in the actual F were they thinking by choosing to go with garbage Unity instead of their solid inhouse engine??? Hopefully Mario vs DK remake doesnt dissapoint

Remaster is just normally upscaling the graphics and/or improving controls.

Mario RPG is Classic and the Remake is gonna be just as good.
I was thinking it would Score around an 85, so 83 is on the Low End but coming from an Older Classic RPG, it isn't gonna have all the Bells n Whistle as a Modern Day RPG.
As Greg Miller said it best: A remake is a original painting you saw and drew it yourself to give it a fresh new look. A remaster on the other hand is just the painting redone (and copied) but given more attention to detail.

Thanks for breaking it down. All these joined critic average sites are always taken as a grain of salt. At the end of the day, if I want to try something, I’m going to do that. I’ll decide what the score should be as I’m the one who deems if something is any good or not at the end of the day.
I got mine preordered and it’s coming to the house tomorrow all the same.

There are two separate stances reviewers take when reviewing remakes/remasters and the scores tend to differ as a result:
1. Is it faithful enough to the original game that you could conceivably substitute it? In other words, does it replace the original? (some people will always say no, but people *do* play remakes and remasters in lieu of the original game because of availability or QoL changes)
2. Does it hold up as a *new* game--that is, how does it score if we ignore the fact that it's a remake/remaster?
It’s nostalgic for sure, but as memory serves, it’s a very ok game. Not a top tier RPG but a quirky classic no doubt. I’m more interested in trying Thousand Year Door for the first time.
I am looking forward to this game so much, it's going to be amazing! The original game is still amazing.

As much as Super Mario RPG has a special place in my heart from childhood I do agree with some of the criticism. Star Ocean Second Story R I think did far more than this remake did and it costs $10 less... arguably $20 if you go through a third party like Humblebundle. I've also seen some people saying it is even easier now and I feel a hard mode would be a welcome addition considering the area attacks now. While it has been probably 10-15 years since I played through it, other than the last boss and Culex I don't remember it being especially hard. Might just wait a bit on this for it to come down to hopefully $40-50 before I pick it up used.
As a owner of the original as a kid and now a owner of remake I think it's a great remake with new things added to spice it up. Only gripe I will point out is the combat is dramatically easier than original. In the SNES version I felt more on edge in combat bc I couldn't just block most magic attacks where as remake unless it a move you just can't block I never feel close to losing in combat. Not a deal breaker but I feel the challenge is not there as much now.

There are differences that may be small, yet change the feel of the game/reveal its not the main Nintendo team:
1. Mario's run is off, The text is no longer written on a scroll parchment.. its a generic beige box and the text is small.
2. The maps are smaller... Look at gameplay footage where you hunt the bandit and compare for yourselves.
The list grows and the original may be better, except for the music and graphics, if you don't prefer the rustic old style.
