- Sleepy Hollow is a 1999 American horror film directed by Tim Burton.
It is a film adaptation loosely inspired by the 1820 short story The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving and stars Johnny Depp and Christina Ricci, with Miranda Richardson, Michael Gambon, Casper Van Dien and Jeffrey Jones in supporting roles.
The plot follows police constable Ichabod Crane (Depp) sent from New York City to investigate a series of murders in the village of Sleepy Hollow by a mysterious Headless Horseman.
Development began in 1993 at Paramount Pictures with Kevin Yagher originally set to direct Andrew Kevin Walker's script as a low-budget slasher film.
Disagreements with Paramount resulted in Yagher being demoted to prosthetic makeup designer, and Burton was hired to direct in June 1998.
Filming took place from November 1998 to May 1999, and Sleepy Hollow was released to generally favorable reviews from critics, and grossed approximately $206 million worldwide.
The film won the Academy Award for Best Art Direction and is considered groundbreaking in terms of visual style and cinematography.
Loved this movie!
We live in a vamp and zombie era, the horseman needs more love.
Great Horror Film, Johnny Depp, Christina Ritchi, Christopher Walken, & Miranda Richardson did a Great Job, Well Written, Very Suspenseful, & Well Directed, 1 of my Favorite Johnny Depp Films & Tim Burton Films
Great Review, I Love Tim Burton he’s 1 of my Favorite Directors My Favorites Of his are Batman 1989, Batman Returns, Mars Attacks, Sleepy Hollow, Planet Of The Apes Remake, Sweeney Todd 2007, & Dark Shadows
What about Charlie and the chocolate factory
I love Dark Shadows and am dissapointed that it didn't make enough money to warrant a sequel, because I think it deserved one.
Just out of curiosity Matt, what are your thoughts on The Ninth Gate? Personally its my favorite Johnny Depp and Roman Polanski film.
+TheVideoInvader Never liked that one. Found it insanely boring. Plus I hate the director (especially for what he was doing with 13 year old girls).
Solid job on the review I haven't this one in years I do remember enjoying it the tune of the film I don't think at least at this point in Tim Burton's career him doing a flick like this I know years later he would do another of many films with Johnny Depp called ''Sweeny Todd'' but I could never get in to that one because of the whole musical vibe which to me didn't mix well IMHO. Thanks all that backstory info about Kevin Yager which I never knew about bro.
I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and think it's one of the best family films to come out in the 2000's!!!!!!!
There are some very nice movies after "Sleepy Hollow" that Tim Burton has done. Like, "Frankenweenie", "Corpse Bride", "Big Fish" and even the musical "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (and I'm not really a fan of musicals btw!). Think "From Hell" is also a great movie. I find the whole Jack The Ripper story quite fashinating. To this day it's still not clear who was The Ripper. I also like the miniseries with Michael Caine about Jack The Ripper a lot. Anyways, "Sleepy Hollow" is especially stylistically (cinematopgraphy, costumes, the whole atmosphere, etc.) a great movie. Johnny Depp is kinda weird in the movie, but it's not too extreme. The legend of the headless horseman is quite an eerie and intriguing story :)
Great review Matt. I love this film. This is my favorite Tim Burton/Johnny Depp film. I enjoy the look of the film, the sets, the score by Danny Elfman, the cast, especially Johnny Depp, which I wish he can do more roles like this. And I did a review of the film and I'm glad you like it.
Of the Japanese films, Godzilla vs. The Sea Monster and vs. Hedorah.
Yes keep it green and even, you can check my review of the 1998 film if you choose.
Nice review. Despite straying greatly from the source material, I really enjoyed this film. The cinematography, music and effects are excellent! And heck how can you go wrong with Chris Walken as the headless horsemen.
+Fisk4life Also, have you ever seen the Disney animated film from the 40's narrated by Bing Crosby? That is by far my favorite adaptation of the story.
+Fisk4life If I did, I don't remember much of it.
i'm sorry john rambo but SLEEPY HALLOW is must certinlly a SLASHER FILM without a doubt. you have a littlre t&a,gore, your sweet&innocent virgin& your anataginist plus this adation of the short story is how you would do a slasher version the right way because it is a slasher. i would definately put this film in my top 5 favorite tim burton films with 1989 BATMAN being #1.even though i understand where your coming from with the simularity between this film&the hughe's bros FROM HELL but i didnt mind the pace&mood to the adaption from a graphic novel, aspecailly how the charecter jack the ripper was protray, best i've ever seen even though i enjoy olssen wells adaption. i would have to say my favorite film with johnny depp as the protaginist is disney's THE LONE RANGER. not only did he give a physcially exciteing performance but also a very comical one as well. he really became the charecter tonto, belivable 110% because to be honest with you, that film should have been call TONTO instead of the lone ranger because depp's performance stoll the show,i even perfer depp more,a hell of alot more in TONTO then disney's PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAIN,more action, more depth&more laughs in my humble opinion.
+Texas82able greetings from earth lol i've only seen bits&parts of benny&joon so i cant give a fair opinion but other films from the 90's that i have seen&enjoy are EDWARD SCISSORHANDS,DON WHAN DEMARCO[underrated performance in my opinion]the underrated NICK OF TIME&WHAT'S EATING GILBERT GRAPE.funny how depp got his start in a wes creaven film, which in a way can be said about kevin bacon in FRIDAY THE 13TH. favorite film starring depp for my dime would have to be DONNIE BRASCO with BLOW coming in right after.i've always look at depp&burton like sam jackson is to tarrintino or de'niro to scorsese, match made in cinema heaven.
de'niro was simply mad with a motive of payback in that remake by scorsese,i enjoy the pace, the chemistry& its de'niro vs nolte&the script was quite cleaver at times when de'niro was on his mission of bloodly revenge. i'd have to say my favorite scorsese picture would have to be CASINO. the way that film was shot made you feel like you were in the backseat while scorsese is doing the driving like third person&thats one of his qualities which separte him from other filmmakers. i also admire de'niro's directorial debut on a film that was a bit of a sleeper which is A BRONX TALE.i enjoy the story as while as the performances&how it was a period film set in new york&it told the situation of a man being a father to his son in a urban enviroment.
mancave THEATER YES! This is a SLASHER film. You are the first person that I have come across that said that! I think this is part of the reason why some people are disappointed with this film: “It’s NOT SCARY!” It’s NOT scary-it’s a SLASHER film. Seeing heads roll and lots of gore-with a spooky atmosphere and a ghost.....
Matt, I happen to love: "Dark Shadows", "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory", and "Frankenweenie".
My favorite Tim Burton movie next to Beetlejuice and one of my favorite Christopher Walken movies too even though Walken is technically in it as the Hessian's full bodied form and he doesn't have any lines...but he's awesome in it though. It's the Walken role that made me a fan of his. Plus, love the dark humor too.
I love this film and watch it every Halloween. Not only is it fun, it has great atmosphere and tension. Also, anything Emmanuel Lubezki photographs is 100% guaranteed to look gorgeous.
The last Tim Burton film I loved this much was Sweeney Todd.
great review matt, I'm a big fan of Tim burton and i highly recomend big fish and sweeney todd.
I remeber when I first watched this movie, and I really enjoyed it. Great review.
Haven't seen this since I was a kid but I remember watching it a lot especially the Horseman scenes. I never really cared all that much about the conspiracy aspect though.
This movie is so good!!!!!
Iron maiden Matt, You're thinking of an Iron Maiden.
And I love Frankenweenie and get the feeling that that's the movie that Burton was building his entire career up, to making.
I can definitely see why you don't like from hell I agree the movie sucks; great review.
Probably Tim Burton's last great movie in my opinion, although I sort of like Sweeny Todd and Frankenweenie.
