- Finally getting a chance to try out a 2022 WRX. Shout out to my cousin who recently purchased one in Florida. She was nice enough to let me come out and shoot a video with it. The 2022 WRX was very controversial on release and I must say that it has grown on me. Its more refined and comfortable. There are some pros to the new engine. The car is smooth to drive, has a great clutch, and is still very responsive. 2022 WRX is one of those cars that either you have it or love it and I think I do love it! Let me know what you all think!

The looks have grown on me and I’m in love. And they got it right with the engine size. Ordering one this fall.
If you've ever driven a 2015-2021 the clutch and engine in this 2022 drive so smoothly. It feels fantastic.
But except the bigger screen at dashboard never grown on me.

This review quality is on par if not better than some of these bigger car channels.
You' got me even more impatient for my 2022 🤣
Haha you're being too kind. I'm not a professional reviewer or have any particular template. This is actually my first car review and we kind of just winged it. I'm glad you enjoyed and I do hope there was some info here that wasn't present in other reviews ! Look forward to hearing about your new 2022!!
Many other reviewers have said the rev-hang is gone in the 22 wrx. That is a HUGE plus, if true imo
Oh definitely. The rev hang is completely gone. The whole stock tune is miles ahead of the VA WRX.
You are very good at this, you got all the skills to become all other mainstream car media person, keep it going!
Those are very kind words. I truly appreciate it !! 💜
You can change every option on the screen using the voice commands. It’s very responsive and A huge upgrade over the last gen. The cladding is fine overall I agree. It grows on you. Also the rear def does not look like a civic at all. It has a very low profile unique look the more I walk up to mine. And yes the trunk does have a spot for a spare. I have always plugged my tires I prefer this and hate taking my tire to places like discount because they always damage my rims anyways. Seats are more bolstered and have more comfort than ever. Not bouncy and slidy like the last gen. Thanks for the review. Appreciate your perspective.
Wow!! Including heat and air conditioner? Like you say "80 degrees heat"?
By far, this is the best review I've seen. Super informative. Mine was delivered over the weekend and some moron in a $hit box F-150 had to park so close beside me, open their door and put a dent on mine. Otherwise, loving the ride and I agree with all the points you made. Personally, it's an upgrade from my 20 Rex.
Omg dude that is absolutely awful about the dent!! People with big cars can be so inconsiderate of space!! Glad to see you enjoy the new ride. Controversial as it may be , as a car it's still very good and I would say if they have another model year and some more aftermarket parts in 2023 I might trade mine in too.
Great review. I like your perspective on subjective features. I just ordered a WRX and have watched a lot of reviews. The the black cladding is growing on me too. I like the real world drivability/livability of the WRX.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I just got mine last week and I absolutely LOVE IT!!! The car drives so much better , it's roomier , and I'm excited for the tuning potential.
The black cladding is “growing” on all Subarus…..Ugg Lee.
i just got the orange and im in love with the color and the plastic areas of the body. i think its dope!
I'm so tempted to get the orange. I am going this coming Tuesday to put a deposit on something from the factory.
Nice review! Would like to see you review the new civic si. Currently on my 2nd Outback and think I want to try something more fun like wrx or civic si, or maybe even a Brz.
I have had my 22 WRXLimited for a week now with sunroof and STI muffler upgrade.. And I was torn between going with a used STI and just going new... I went and test drove it a few times granted I'm coming from an Outback not a performance car lol. I am super happy with my purchase and thanks for leaving a really good review of this car, all the others have been negative I've watched.. I love This car, it is sweet!
Thanks so much for the support! If you check out other videos of mine you'll see that I've been doing some testing against the STi and other cars. Also just been pushing the car in general and so far it's taken everything I've thrown at it. So know that you have one solid car with the choice you made. 🤘
Great review. I've owned 4 WRX's in the past 20 years and this is the best one. Ordered mine in 2-22 and took delivery in early 5-22.
How do you like it so far? I'm always wanted a Subaru but I read of them buring oil I think it was a problem maybe from a few years ago so I'm hoping they fixed that problem. Does your burn any oil? Do you have to add any oil between oil changes?
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 I've owned several Subaru models since 2004 and none of them burned oil or required oil additions between oil changes. The 2022 WRX has been great so far.
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 get ya car serviced on time and u will have no issues
Just picked up a 2023 WRX, Car is so smooth and no doubt stiff chassis, This is a sports car, l love the grip of the AWD because l live in cold weather plenty snow and the car just goes, tons of fun and love the 6 speed. Power is satisfactory for an everyday driver, car can hustle and get moving ok.
Just picked up a red base model yesterday. It looks good. It’s grown on me for sure. Lost my 2010 hatch in a crash last week so this is a huge upgrade!
OH wow congratulations! I bet that makes you feel like you really made a jump into the 21st century.
Sounds great! im thinking of buying the base model also, and that too will be a huge improvement for me also. How are you enjoying it so far? Does it burn any oil?
@@HeavyMetalWRX that is exactly it!
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 you know , people told me all about oil burning when I got my WRX but It was clean clean clean. I really don't think you'll have to worry too much, even with blow back.
You don’t necessarily have to use the screen to control the ac settings, you can press a single button on the steering wheel(voice command) to control the ac,radio and many other features by some simple voice commands, if you read the owners manual and I mean really read the owners manual from front to back, I assure you that you will find new features/settings that you didn’t know about, also the Premium trim is more like the base model and the sunroof is an option regardless of trim. LED headlights are standard.
What do you think about the orange color? I think its deffintley funky & grabs attention.
I already liked the orange on the Crosstrek and I would 100% get it on the WRX
The 22 WRX RS In Australia is the manual premium with sunroof and sound system. JDM AND ADM Markets get spare tyres due to it being needed for compliance. they dont add it to us model to cut cost.
How much did you pay for your 2022 Wrx Premium after taxes and fees and everything else in between?
I have an act hd clutch in mine i can say its smooth as butter
I just ordered mine in white after I saw it in the showroom, the cladding looks really good on it. You can also buy paint matched fender flares from aeroflow but it looks kind of odd imo
I got a white one too ! I'm not gonna paint match the fenders. It's actually pretty pricey and I believe aeroflow industries sand down the honeycomb design. I've heard mixed results.
The clutch bite on the 22 model is a MASSIVE improvement over my 21. My 21 always felt a little, off, in comparison to any other manual I have driven(which is a lot). The 22 is back on point. Loving my WRB Base.
This would be my biggest complaint with my 21. It actually is making me want to get a 22 , plus I have heard some good news on the tuning + Ethanol front!
@@HeavyMetalWRX If its any indication to what the motor is capable of, Prime motoring got 537whp out of a stock FA24 Ascent long block. Only frying a piston when they ran out of fuel an it leaned out. The FA24 seems like a monster just waiting to be let out of its cage. I am EAGERLY awaiting the tunes haha.
@@HeavyMetalWRX Ethanol??? Does it run on E85 or something?
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 yea it can at e30 right now. Prime motoring has been working on it using the JB4 and pushing almost 400wtq 360whp with a e35 blend. It's same as the FA20s. These engines loooove a bit of corn. 🌽
Integra clutch, rev hang , and being slower are exactly why I ordered a WRX (limited with sunroof) instead of an Integra. Also drove several 2-3 year old WRX and the new 1 is so much smoother, more quiet, and less harsh.
I think we get a space saver tyre in Australia. Also our higher tiers have a sun roof.
I'm happy to not be forced into getting a sunroof if I want something higher than base. I'll be picking up a 23 model w/o sunroof next week.
Awesome👁️, welcome to the club!
Just got mine 2 days ago.. A RS speck.. It has rear seat warmers and a sunroof as well..
Congrats man !!! I am actually considering trading my 21 in for a 22 this month.
Standard outback dash. After a few drives you can hit those buttons blind. You get used to it
Shopping this now.
Have yet to get a test drive.
Have heard the interior is noisy at speed.
True?
Because it's a Subaru the answer to the noise is yes. Compared to the previous WRX is much quieter. Compared to other cars ( golf GTI and civic si) I believe it is slightly nosier. This has verna staple of Subaru WRX for decades though. it's not a big, it's a feature 😂
My 17 wrx was just totaled, definitely thinking about picking one of these up!
Contrary to what people keep saying, the 2022 is not bad at all. You couldn't go wrong !
@@HeavyMetalWRX I’ve heard a lot of mixed reviews. I’m going to try and rest drive one this weekend! Great video btw, I appreciated it!
@@torymma92 thank you ! Of course driving and getting the car in hand is always the best way to know if it's for you...if you've ever driven a WRX / STi prepare to be amazed that Subaru can make a car that's fun to drive AND comfortable. :)
Nice reve sun roof is a must to see the sun and moon and fresh air
My problem with a sunroof is it makes the car a bit heavier and you lose an inch of headroom
The sunroof is very subjective. I actually had a sunroof on every car of mine up until the 22. It's personal choice really. This time the choice was to pay more and I took that personally 😂😂
Have you checked under the jack
The brakes.... If you want to track it, replace the stock brake pads and put in better brake fluid. It's literally all you have to do to get good track performance. (Assuming it arrives to you with Summer tires.)
Yea this was the same with the 21 I have. Went with stoptech pads and dot4 and it did great on the track.
Love mine
Awesome ride. I'm looking to buy one. Except these are hard to find. If there is one available, the markup price is crazy.
There have been quite a few in St Louis at msrp. If you're nearby it might be worth the trip 😉
they can’t sell them here in the south there’s a bunch at msrp there just sitting on lots
@@kailara8002 Wow where in the south could I find one of these?
They kept the push out for the spare because in markets like where I live, _(Canada)_ we get the spare tire.
Ohhhh very interesting ! I think sometimes I forget that different markets get slight modifications. Thanks for letting me know.
the plastic intakes are lighter weight and dont heat soak as much so IDK why people always hate on em
The car looks great . Looks more rally now .
I’m a little late but I haven’t seen anyone address it the spare tire thing. I sold acuras for a while and our newer models were the same way. No spare tire, came with a repair kit, but still had the space for one. We were told it was for weight reduction ultimately (idk how true that is). The reason for the spare tire space is so people can order a spare tire if they want one but the manufacturer can still sell it with the reduced weight for certain epa fuel mileage something or other (again, idk how much truth there is to that.) But long story short, that’s the reason for the odd spare tire situation
Hey , friend! I don't think this has been mentioned yet. That's really interesting..becuase some markets did get the spare tire instead of the repair kit. I know a few people in the community that opted to have a spare tire and just bought one. Thank you for your insight! 🤘🙏
Canadian WRX comes with the spare tire. So I guess they just don’t put them in the USA ones before putting them on the boat for North America but leave all the other tools in it?
Get the Premium without the sunroof and Harman/Kardon package, save even more money.
i guess I got a bad one, mines shakes and vibrates at start, drives slow compared to my 2016 WRX, the only improvement I see is the soft clutch and the interior
Oh man that doesn't sound good! That may have something to do with the pvc recall, perhaps? People were saying that it was causing some rough idles.
I'm waiting for my 22' Premium w/ sunroof. Few more weeks!
That's exciting !!
@@HeavyMetalWRX It's worth the wait! Ordered mine in February and it arrived in May.
finally they stopped running the intake under the intake manifold
In Australia we get a spare tyre ( space saver)jack, wheel brace ,etc.
I'll be honest, im still jealous of the wagon. My cousin lives in Australia and I've never been. I think it's time to take a trip 🤣
@@HeavyMetalWRX there’s never been a better time. Check the exchange rate. For every US dollar you bring you’ll get about $1.46 Australian.
@@Gregsheppo66 perfect. Do you have a VB? Come pick me up from the airport in style 🤣
@@HeavyMetalWRX yes I do have a VB & yes I could pick you up, no problem at all. I know the airport very well & it’s only about a 20 minute drive from home. One good thing about Sydney’s airport is it’s so close to the city.
Asian market like in japan, taiwan, they can have spare tire in their trunk.
I ordered a base WR blue it's pretty fun so far put gold RPF1 and ETS catback to hear it
WRB + gold wheels that's what I have now !
In Canada, we don't get base with wr blue.
@@HeavyMetalWRX Very nice! Every since bug eye STI came out that's been my favorite combo
@@brucelee5465 damn but be happy you're in Canada you guys get the car cheaper cause conversion rates. For example both countries it's $30k base model but US converts to $24k CAD so I had pay $6k more
You said non DI version on the brz, I think you meant to say a non turbo version on the brz
Good catch !! Thanks 🙏. I thought the BRZ was both DI and port injected..I will have to re-research
@@HeavyMetalWRX the BRZ is direct injected just like the new wrx and any other new Subaru for that matter, the brz motor is naturally aspirated vs turbo charged on the wrx, however I’m not exactly sure on how similar or different both 2.4 motors are, I imagine the turbo charged 2.4 motor would have to be built with stronger internals considering all the extra strain and heat turbo charging brings to any engine. It would be cool if both engines are found to identical besides the obvious added turbo. Just imagine the new brz with a really strong stock engine that can handle a turbo add on…..now that would be pretty darn cool if you ask me….
If you don't want to touch the screen, you can use voice command.
This is true. I guess over the years I haven't become accustomed to speaking to technology. I am an IT but a lot of times I find just using my hands. Is that much faster but in a car I do need to get better at it.
Nice, I have the red color. I like the car but not a big fan of the rear bumper and the big screen inside. I also need to keep a lookout for aftermarket sound systems because the bass is just embarrassing in this car
It looks great in red, no doubt about that. The sound system is something all WRX and STi drivers face on the regular. Haha
The base stereo definely lacks bass clarity. Early 90s Nissan Maximas have a better stereo.
If you care about audio it's pretty much a given in most Japanese cars that you're going to want to get something aftermarket.
@@mstoker5821 audio was pretty good in my Camry
@@areebanavaid121 tried many over the years including "factory premium" systems but they've never touched anything I've gotten aftermarket especially in the bass range🤷
My WRX 2022 has a sunroof and its a preium
Better than my 2020 sti. I now have the 2022! Love it
Fantastic !!! I know people didn't like some things but overall as a car it is a big upgrade in creature comforts and it's still fun.
@@HeavyMetalWRX yeah and it's faster than the VA and the sti.
@@HeavyMetalWRX czcams.com/video/6MiMTQOVA1w/video.html
At about 11:44
What color did you get?
@@spacedmellow5031 I got the white premium
Tire repair kit vs actual tire and rim = cost savings for Subaru and all the other manufacturers as well. Sole reasoning.
It’s called Ignition Red…..in the USA and Canada
It's such a beautiful color. If my cousin didn't get it I would have. I ended up going with white and it is BEAUTIFUL.
why are cars not automatically coming with backseat vents?
Honestly I think all cars should come with this if they have back seats.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I agree! I have to freeze so my kid can be comfortable :)
@@pamelas6775 lol omg yes the life of a parent.
Your review just convinced me to go get one. Thank you, I almost fucked up and bought a jeep.
Oh no yeah don't get a Jeep get the WRX. Did you end up buying one?
@@truckergilligangilligan5877 Yesss! Premium trim, went with silver and black. 36,000 out the door. 4.9% no money down!
I don't know why I haven't been driving anything other than a Subaru WRX.... Everyday I drive the car I fall more and more in love with it. I think the WRX is a lot like sex, everyone should give it a whirl.
8:10 thats a strange mine has a sunroof thats werid..
We found out later that there is a package you can add to the premium that adds a sunroof and Harmon kardon system. It's a package too.
FYI, I have the premium and I have the sunroof
The sunroof is optional and no longer tied specific to the trim. Like in 2021 if you got a premium the sunroof was standard in that increased price.
5:12 thats strange theres a pocket in mine.
Dang did you get a special version ? Haha I bought a 22 for myself , premium as well, no pockets in the back of the door.
My premium came with the sunroof
Yea the sunroof is a $1800 option and ota packages with the Harmon Kardon sound system. How are you liking the car ?
@@HeavyMetalWRX just bought it yesterday, so it’s alittle early to say, but so far I’m really enjoying it!
saya WRX
Is this the last wrx ever
It isn't. This was a 2022. This month we got the 2023 so at least 1 more year. I expect that Subaru will keep the WRX around at least 5 years or so.
@@HeavyMetalWRX I mean this gen . After 4-5 years will they make a new gen or is this the last gen ? I’ve got a wrx RS ice silver manual ordered for June :)
I just hate the look on that long screen....remind me of a Wrx with tesla package lol
The auto market is soooo depressing right now. There are no new cars.
Yea new popular cars are hard to find. My wife wanted a Miata or mini Cooper and we couldn't find a single one for a month to test drive brand new.
The infotainment looks like a urinal. You’re right - it is distracting. Bad. The mileage of the new one is lower than the previous generation - i dont care of you are in the boost less - the rating is less MPG. The new WRX body it’s last year’s Corolla……the new global platform is shared with the Outback, Forest, and Ascent. Why in the world did Subaru lower the torque of the WRX version of the same power train? I am sorry, but the previous generation of the WRX and the older models are more driver’s cars………and isn’t that why we like them? This is no longer rallye - inspired - it is a Crosstrek turbo with plastic cladding. Nice video, but i dont agree with you on the new WRX being “better” - to me, it is not and i am subaru fan - have had five of them.
Drive one. I’ve had 2 22’s. They’re actually really good. Don’t let the numbers on paper fool you. This car is matured compared to the previous generation, and is quicker.
@@grimizzi715 that may be - but once it loses that rallye feel, and is smooth, i move on. Thanks anyway - to each his own. I got my ‘16 dialed in and it only has 28K on the clock. I’m good.
@@tomrakusan1179 I abuse mine in the dirt and believe me it’s just as good o
If not better than the previous gen. Regardless Subaru makes a fun ass car and I feel privileged to be able to work for them.
@@tomrakusan1179 every reviewer that has drove this car has said it’s better then the last gen in every way what are you talking about
It's not about peak, it's about the area under the curve when it comes to drivability and "fun factor"
😐no one saw the 2015 concept. I did
Was it good or bad? I remember when the VA came out and people were not happy. Minus the bumper drama it was said then that it's the "end of the WRX". Haha
More distracted driving with the huge center screen
Yea but this is something we will start seeing in all new cars.
No spare tire. Every brand that does that...👎👎
subaru needs to hire new staff theses models for the past decade look so bad!
They have definitely provided buyers some conversational material 😁😁
Looks like a crosstek.
Lol okay no it does not. Drive it. It’s a real WRX at heart. I bought a 22. Had no issues trading my sti for it.
@@procrunchie4899 it does look like a crosstrek. I drove one and it was slower and softer than the 21. And really underwhelming in every way when compared to my 21 sti
