It's good for when you're ahead vs a squishy team or when you can tank enough dmg already and want to deal dmg yourself. Def not recommend when behind in a matchup. I suggest watching BriefCaseMan for some in depth guides and gameplays :)

Is it still worth to build sun fire into mostly ranged enemy team.

Yeah I'd say so cause it gives armor and you can use it to wave clear as well cause it does damage to minions. Not to mention that Mundo is melee so if you want to do damage you have to get in close meaning that if you do, Sunfire will just make you do more damage.
