Why are the houses in Burano so colorful?
There are several hypotheses about the colorful houses of Burano. One of them says that the bright facades were to help fishermen return home when they were caught by a thick fog, often found in the Venetian Lagoon, especially in winter. A more daring version of this legend says that it was not so much about reaching the shore as about getting to the right house, instead of hitting the threshold and arms of a neighbor. Another hypothesis is that the colors were assigned to individual families living on the island and were a hallmark, marking the border of the estate. Regardless of the genesis, the fact is that today the colorful houses of Burano are a great attraction that attracts tourists. A typical house is a two- or three-storey cube, often with a slightly sloping roof, where there is a kitchen, living room and bathroom downstairs, and rooms on the first floor (or floors). Interestingly, the owner of the house cannot simply repaint the façade in a different color, because the current
