This is so beautiful and I'll be creating some with my grandkids. We love painting rocks, and thank you Shari for this great idea! However, as a family who spends a lot of time in national parks and forests we respectfully ask that painted rocks be kept in our developed areas and NOT left in the wilderness. It is very jarring to come across one of these while hiking in our wild places, where they definitely don't belong. We thank you!
thanks for pointing that out. I'm an artist too, and I love painting rocks, but if you leave your rocks lying around where they are not welcome, they are no longer art, but litter. Leave wild areas pristine!
These rocks are so pretty ❤
These turnout out nicely. What a fun project to put some place for someone to find. A nice random act of art. Parting with them would be hard as they are lovely.
Looks liked you had fun & your rocks came out great! It's nice that your husband
will collect rocks that look lie hearts he's a keeper!
Shari, thank you so much for this fun tutorial! the rocks are gorgeous!!!
That is a great rock. You have wonderful memories from it.
For me, the pearl/metallic colors and your last part of the splatters is what made these come to life. So pretty! I'd like to know if you painted the back side as well.
What a great idea! Your husband sounds like a sweetheart ❤️
Thank you for a wonderful tutorial! Your rocks are beautiful!
I need some rocks now. They turned out great. Thanks for showing the whole process I had my doubts in the beginning too!
I love it! These rocks with the alcohol inks are so pretty. I know one year we did painted rocks on vacation at the cabin. We went to a nursery and bought rocks that were meant for the garden like your tree rock and painted them. Caused a stir on the strip and everyone came to see the painted rocks. Good memory. Thanks for showing us how to do this and will start searching out some rocks to try it. You're the best!
Awesome! Have fun!
I LOVE THIS! And I loved hearing the stories behind your rock collection. I, too, have collected some rocks over the years both inside and outside. Thanks so much for sharing this idea and inspiring another use for my alcohol ink collection. I think I’ll make it today’s play. Have a great day!
The rocks turned out great!
Love this... can’t wait to find some Rocks and play! Thank you for the tip about painting (priming) the rocks white first.
I'm always amazed at what you come up with such talent. I try all of them now to try this one! Thanks Sherie
Shari, these are awesome, thank you for the inspiration. I suck at painting rocks, this looks easy!!
Try it!
I love this video, Sherry. Thanks so much
Gorgeous and a great tutorial!
Beautiful. Thanks for sharing.
What a great idea. Looking forward to trying this technique. Thank you for sharing. Take care.
OMG, these are amazing! I adore the heart stones - I had a collection many years ago when my children and I started seeing them on a beach we visited. What a sweet gesture by your husband. I can't wait to try this SOON!!!
So Amazing! I use to paint rocks with the kids when we camped. They would collect them during the day on our adventures, then we'd paint in the evening. 25 years later, some of the kids Still remember those fun trips.
I can't wait to make these "geode" looking ones! 😍😍
So gorgeous! I can’t wait to try this! Since COVID I’ve been crafting weekly with my 6 year old great nephew over FaceTime. When we can be together this summer, we can try this!
So very clever! Definitely want to try this with some of our travel rocks collection.
You should!
I use a lot of alcohol inks & lots of CA beach rocks, but never thought of combining them--thanks!! They are beautiful!

What a great idea! I’ve wondered about how painting rocks with alcohol inks might turn out!!! And what fun family info!
This was a great tutorial; I have been wanting to do this forever. Today as I was putting the finishing touches to organizing my crafting space I found 4 bottles of alcohol inks and the blending solution!!! Forgot it came in a previous card kit now to find the rocks. I have to say yours came out amazing; lol very that 1st one, the colors are gorgeous.

This is one of those videos that get 10 thumbs up!! Kuddos to your husband for thinking of you. That is love!
They are beautiful. I have rocks, guess I have to buy some alcohol inks...... 😂
How much fun is this…done glass but not rocks….yet😂😂😂 thanks for sharing….did you do the bottom?
So fun! Did you paint the bottom?
I want to do this on my tiles for my outside dinning table ! how do i seal the alcohol ink on the tile ?
I did have a problem with the white paint lifting when I put down the alcohol ink, perhaps didn’t wait long enough for the paint to dry. Was wondering if applying a coat of mod Podge would help.
❤
Where do you get the alloy paint?
could you just use a regular acrylic white paint?
How do you seal them?
Hi, Sherry! This is a great project and I would love to try it. Do you wear a protective face mask when you work with alcohol inks? I’ve heard from someone who typically does, that you need to wear an N95 mask to protect your lungs. Thanks for sharing!!
For smaller projects like this, as long as you’re working in a very well ventilated area, masks aren’t necessary. If you are working on large scale art pieces for protracted periods, or if you have any respiratory issues, then a mask would be a good idea.
Katherine S Thanks!
Can you use regular acrylic paint as your base? These are amazing! My daughter and I will have a blast getting messy! Thank you for sharing!
You sure can!! Have FUN!!
Gorgeous! I love them! Never in a million years would I have though to use my alcohol inks on rocks! Can’t wait to try! ❤️ Did you seal them? Or do you think you need to if placing in garden or hiding them in parks?
Any idea on how to seal them? I paint and hide rocks all the time and use Dura-Clear, but I am thinking that may pick up some color and of course I am thinking I can't use a spray lacquer...
We've seen some people use Mod Podge.
Do you need to seal them if used in the garden?
I heard the reply after I asked.
Ah, I recognized your hands from the thumbnail and knew I wanted to watch.
Alcohol ink on rocks is one of my favorite things to do. The problem is that I cannot seem to get enough UV protection on them :(
Krylon has a uv-resistant spray, works pretty well with alcohol ink but it has a strong smell -needs to sit a couple days to set. Then final seal with Kraylon Kamar varnish
