I grew up on Ft George, near the Talbot Islands. That's the "northside", but nothing like the Moncrief or Norwood areas. Just because it's north of downtown, they call it the Northside. Jacksonville's bad neighborhoods are everywhere. They should be more specific when they're reporting crimes. They shouldn't just smack a "Northside" label on it. They should use the subdivision name. The Westside has the same stigma. Riverside is in the "westside" and is nothing like Cassat or Lane Avenue areas. But, let's be honest here, people are trying to distance their areas from the negative press certain neighborhoods get for their criminal activity. Jacksonville is the biggest city in America by square miles. North, south, east, west are too broad a term for reporting news. When they go to San Marco and do a report on a breast cancer benefit, they don't say they're on the Southside, but it IS south of the median that would describe it as such. It's only when they report crime that a general term is used.
I'm on the Westside, own a home for 20 years and have never had one problem. Not even on my street. The Northside is Dunn and Lem Turner area to me and that's horrible.

I was confused on what is the north side of the south side because your terminology is different and unfortunately you don't use the same things I was used to like inside of the beltway or outside of the beltway. I thought I was on the north side but someone told me your Oceanside which confused me because I'm not close to the ocean but hey I'm learning to understand that it's just the Jacksonville way
Its "OCEANWAY" because it WAS the way to the ocean, Back In The day. It IS the North side! and it USED to be a QUIET little community of folks who have lived there for years. Then came River City Marketplace, First Coast High, and more house/apartment developments than you can count. it's Not that quiet little community anymore. People are getting shoved out of their homes because of development that most can't afford, the crime rate has more than tripled, and the traffic is horrendous. Move on up further north to Yulee, that's also a Nightmare. Just turning into noisy, unaffordable living for a lot of North side folks. ☹
I'm glad new4jax cleared up some ignorance about the North side being such a bad area and the south side ...aka ....east by a map being the best area. Jacksonville/ Duval is so Large and growing that we really have some very beautiful and nice areas to live/ shop/ entertainment all over town if you just get out and explore.

That one thing I don't like about the news stations in Jax's is when they say the Northside, Westside, Southside and Eastside, when they talk about a story, there'r are more than 500 neighborhoods within Jacksonville, so when something happen they should name the area of the city where it happened at by name: LaVilla, Brooklyn, Riverside and Avondale, Springfield, Eastside, Mandarin, San Marco, Ortega, Brentwood, Murray Hill, Arlington, Southpoint etc. y'all get it
The Northside is known as the Neglected Northside to those of us who live here. Only stores they seem to build are Dollar General and Tire stores. Oh, and fast food of course. Infrastructure is lacking.

Arlington had a period of crime. I still can NOT believe the development in the woods I knew in my childhood, teens and young adult periods.

I'm a true Northsider as I've lived on 5300 block of Norwood Ave (Norwood area) right behind the Flea Market before moving to 32218, so I got the hood experience and the peace & quiet. NORTHSIDE BREAKDOWN: Dunn Ave. is the dividing line between Northside's good & bad. South of Dunn, Northside is hood, North of Dunn going towards the Airport, there's very little crime. 32208-09 are the hood areas of Northside where a lot of crime happens.

Looks like they need a zone 7, split zone 6 in half. They have way too much crime and need more officers in both zones.
