It's crazy cool to me that MIDI was made exactly 40 years ago and it stood the trial of time to this day. Dave Smith and Sequential had a huge impact on the modern music industry and I think many people don't realize, as they're not nearly as big as Korg or Yamaha. By the way you said MIDI was invented by Dave Smith Instruments - they were actually called Sequential back then and DSI is the name they had to take for the recent couple of years after they decided to reactivate their brand and they eventually reclaimed the rights to use the original name - Sequential. They were the first that allowed musical instruments to talk to each other in a modern way. They also revolutionized synthesizers, connecting the analog with digital and taking the best out of each domain. Dave passed away a year ago. Rest in peace Dave :(
Atari ST and the like were using MIDI ports on their Computer way before them people started using MIDI on Synths
This has been one of the most useful videos on MIDI Ive found I t eh last few years! I really like your relatable mindset as opposed to channels from conpanies that only present the viewer with a product to buy demo'd by a 'pro'. It's great to have a sense of community
What an excellent video. Well done! A short explanation on how to use MIDI THRU to synch with gear. The Daisy Chain ideas simply brilliant. Thanks for putting this together.
Love this tutorial: Wonderful and so organized !!
When I finally grasped your first instructions the video had ended. I will play it back a few dozen times...Great vid, you´ve got a new subscriber.
Feeling like going to college for 5 plus years was a waste of time. You have taught me so much thanks
Concise, quick, and no frills/ego. A+ work, Jade! Thank you!
This was really useful. As someone new to this, I often get a bit confused over what USB does and does NOT accomplish. Thanks for putting this up - subscribed!
You have a dreamy setup. Studio goals. 🥰
Thank you for this simple quick video! I'm a guitarist who is just getting into synths. Bought a digitakt, and just got a minilogue XD. This was really helpful, thanks!
Thanks! That is exactly what I needed to know. Quick and to the point. This is why I like you. I am such a noob about MIDI. My mind glazes over, when it comes up..but it's becoming essential, now that I'm really trying to do a synth rig.
Fantastic, makes it all seems so easily connectable now.
Love looking for information on here and finding nice, concise, informative, and to the point videos like these
Thank you!
So much knowledge in under 4 minutes - amazing! Keep it up!
Thanks for listing equipment!!! I learn in less time with you, than some on CZcams!
Wow dope setup, love wjhat you've done with the volcas and P.O.s that rack is sweet!
Concise and a good pace - well done!
That was fantastic. Thank you.
Thank you for this. Seriously. This was exactly the video I was looking for.
Awesome video. Informative and short. Exactly what I needed as a Midi-Noob Thx. :)
Fast and efficient! Love your stuff, thanks.
Great video. Jeff Watkins makes a great point, not many people bother to explain MIDI. thanks for making this
Great vid. And so much great gear!! 🤯
This is what I needed! Why is it so damn hard to find information on how to do this 0_0 setting up a home studio soon and need to understand how to control multiple desktop synths from one midi keyboard thankyou!!! ✌️
I'm so jealous of your studio!
The best simple explanation for Midi dawless conections on youtube
Omg I love your home studio
Thumbsed up and subscribed! Info is just what I needed.
The korg/pocket operator setup you have is pretty awesome.
Awesome video! Would love to see more about channels and setting up slave and master clock stuff. Thank you for doing this!
Omg! I wish you were my neighbor. I’ve recently decided to take all my gear that i have collected over the years and get serious about making music. Trying to organize and hook it all together was driving me insane! I’m so glad to have found your videos! FYI- jealous of all your beautifully organized synths😊
Thanks dude!
Very well. done...very helpful!....thank you for putting this together!
Awesome video, jade! Very pedagogical :) great with some visual aids
Thanks for taking the time do this video.
THANK YOU FOR COVERING THIS!!! I'm literally freaking out on how to get mine to work in Cubase.
Dope set up and awesome video
I love to see girls nerding out around synths :3 Great job!
I have been scanning the web and came across this excellent tutorial from you. I just purchased a BOSS RC-300 looper pedal and I own a Casio CT-680, Yamaha PSR-530, Yamaha DJX, and Roland EXR-5. Looking forward to utilizing these with the daisy chain setup.
wow dude.. you have a dope setup!
Good on girl ,you makeour lives much easier ,with your explanation here , even though its a lot to take in ,for a new boy to midi.👌✌👍
I needed this video so bad🙈
Great video ma'am...
Very detailed explanation..
This was my biggest query on synth
Thank you so much,
Keep it up with your music ma'am...
May God bless you n your family
Love from India ...
Stay safe, stay healthy
thank you this video was very helpful ❤️
Very interesting, and some great gear 😊
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge. Very helpful.
oh snap. ive have formally surpassed previous incarnations of geekdom, and have entered the midi twilight zone. i actually understood exactly how you chain everything, and even what equipment you are using. i dig the euro synths! im using all native instrument gear, with a couple token pieces of akai pro audio. to be fair and honest, i did learn to program general midi c back in the middle 90s when i was working as an Apple Multimedia developer. Ill also say that todays midi gear is so far beyond what we began with back in the day. general midi was , to paraphrase einstein, spooky from a distance, and we referred to the phenomena as voodoo, as we also used the term scsi voodoo. sometimes it worked, sometimes it didnt, hence the name voodoo, and scsi voodoo. crap. i just dated my self. im old as dirt apparently, but kickin out some decent progressive trance, and post industrial groove porn, with a new album scheduled for release towards the end of the year. you my young friend, upon seeing what youre working with, appear to have a bright future, indeed. cheers.
Well said!Cheers!!
MIDI to music is what USB is to computers! Your videos are fantastic.
Really well explained. I use a DAW but still got all my hardware from back in the day. Hope to get it all plugged in soon.
Needed this 🙌♥️🙏
Clear and informative tutorial thanks
I just l learned alot! Thanks!
Excellent video!
Loving that Arale poster 😁!
That's a really useful video, I use the daisy chain method but I have been thinking of getting one of the thru boxes
I do as well, but I don't feel a need to get a thru box until I finally get a brain, namely the Novation Circuit.
Crazy. Top!!! Thanks from Brazil!!!
thank you so much, you have saved me time and that's valuable to me :)
Great video, thanks very much :)
You can draw well too! Very informative video. Thank you!
wow!! very clear. really informative. kinda helps... no, not kinda... this really helps take some of the heebie-jeebies out of getting the heck off of the mouse & computer & getting rolling with a hardware rig... which, despite my fears & very limited understanding of things, is exactly what I'm in the middle of doing. so I can't thank you enough for helping me along with vids like this one.
Brilliant!
very helpful vid, thx
Oh damn. Random discovery, you are very very skilled.
love ittt thank you :D
Hey thanks for this video!
I'm new to all of this and I have a Moog Grandmother coming in tomorrow. Looking all kinds of info
THANK YOU MA'AM... saved me !!
super helpful thankzzzz sistah
Thanks great tutorials!!!
Thank you for sharing!
Great video, the only disadvantage to a setup like this is that all your gear in the chain has to be powered on... Normally midi-thru ports are not working without powering up.. few exceptions that hardwire midi-in to miti-thru
Thank you I appreciated it
This vid is as informative as it is rare. Major props! I have an old rack mount version: The TC Helicon Voiceworks which does have 'in,' 'thru,' and 'out,' options. All I want to do is send it into an old Yamaha synth that has 'in' and 'out' midi. Would I simply run the 'in' and 'thru' cables to the back of the Yamaha? Thx.
Thank you!
you're rad keep it up buena ondaz
I started using DAW exactly one year ago and while it has simplified some tasks, I do prefer dawless jamming. Thank you for today's lesson.
Oh really.......just like that you can summarize what a DAW can and can't do after a year of making music?
If you did a deep dive on your software you used you would probably feel overwhelmed pretty quickly. Hybrid setups are the most effective.
Yep, very helpful!
Yes! Thank you for mentioning how "a lot of people expect you to know how to use MIDI right away for whatever reason".
Nice case for the Volcas and POs.
Awesome vid
Wow nice setup
Loving your new studio setup, especially the volcas and POs box+mixer arrangement. My humble arrangement is sounding worse the more complex I make it. Got problems with mix and individual audio levels (cheap and nasty mixer is probably the culprit) and now I have midi problems. Was using a midi merger box (up to 4in/4out) which is usb powered but it doesn't work properly now. Reverted to simple midi split cables and now I can't have one of my keyboards in it ...ARRGGHH! Think I need to do (yet another : ( } RESET on the whole system. The volca mixer for just the volcas and POs has given me an idea...Thank you ; )
Do you have a video showing how to start/stop sync and note input OCTATRACK to Mother and mother SYNCING the DFAM up to it all? Settings for Octa and the Mother set up process. Let me watch this again! Hope you have a splendid holiday and you are well!
I think your video is the best I ve seen thank you
Thanks!
Thanks for making this video! I just got my fist pieces of gear to get going on, but got stuck on how to connect stuff together. I was wondering if you have a photo of how you connected your Volca setup? Basically, what I have atm is the volca setup you have plus an elektron digitakt and am trying to hook those up together, I'm still a little stuck on that part. Would you happen to know how to hook up an electronic drum kit to this kind of setup by any chance???
Great vid, but I feel like I need to watch it at 1/2 speed lol
Hahahahahahahahahhahahah you made my day. Great vid by the way, but I feel like I need to watch other 8 times lol
I straight up turned on the closed caption and THAT couldn't really keep up! LMFAO
So much better than taking this content and desperately trying to reach the 10 minute mark for that ad revenue
Need help ergently I want to controle my ks rack with my korg krome and hear sounds Of kd help or may look at selling ks and don't want to
Omg thank you that helps so much. So nice to watch other girls produce too
that went from 0 to confusing in .00008 seconds ! This is probably good for people with years of experience with MIDI. It doesn't help people just starting out.
Your best video yet subbed today. I guess i just enjoy people who share great info quickly. I already knew the stuff in the vid Except the daisy chaining. I knew of it but still haven't done it no need in my set up. I've always wanted to ask you what do you record your jams with. Sometimes I use a tape deck a dp02 or logic x it all depends on my mood and how I feel about its potentail. SOMETIMES all 3. Anyway keep on makin the great vids we APPRECIATE you!
I record into Octatrack and if need be for further editing I take those stems into ableton, but that happens less and less.
There is genuinely not ONE easy example of how to do this on the entire interwebs. GODAMNIT.
Good advice
that volca rig is cool
Wow amazing ...
Thanks a lot for this video. Would love to know more about how a midi controller/keyboard can connected to master synthesizer to be able to derive sounds from it. Also, would like to know how midi thru works and its use.Thanks. Much love! :)
Why has it taken me 5 years to find this kind of a video... WTF
