During long years, Regina had any regret, that's why her heart was dark, until the 3x20 episode. It's our job to not let darkness take our heart, so that's what Snow did, the darkness went away.
The act of redemption is just that, action. Like magic it's about what you feel and Snow White desired to hold on to goodness as is her habit. Regina just naturally goes the opposite.
