The Fijian win over the Soceroos was Australia's undoing in the end. A country like Australia, while a minnow in world football back then, simply could not and should not have let and even poorer minnow of islanders beat them. That result came back to haunt Australia in the end. Matters little, that was 35 years ago now, Israel did not qualify neither, they were pure shite against Columbia, who went on to have a relatively ok World Cup in Italy, they didn't disgrace themselves, as they only lost by small results, their goalkeeper Huigita was their undoing with his stupid antics.
@verona64 As we say here in Ireland, a little wobbler, a think in the armour at the start will cause a bigger explosion later on. First round, second third round, whatever, the opposition at some stage will always find a weakness if it has been exposed at some stage initially, they're all intrinsically linked, psychology speaking.

That loss to Fiji was in a first round, and had nothing to do with Australia not qualifying for the World Cup.

Against Colombia in the play-off they were all out of luck, many chances but the ball just didn't find the net.
