Brenda shouldn't have waste her time with Alan👮♂in the first place because to me he's the true criminal mastermind in the story as he's arrogant, shallow, nasty and very controlling became his own downfall after was was expose and sent to prison for life. Chester👮♂ might not be attractive like Alan but he's good person who care for the people around him as shown a lot of courage to stand up to Alan when he was about to threaten Brenda. It's always best to be yourself rather trying to be someone you're not because if you give people a chance to get to know the real you they would like you but if they can't accept you the way you are well then that's they're problem not you.
If only Alan did not make plans to let a criminal get away, he would of have more power to keep his partner in his control. Too bad he went as far as to break the law as a police officer which means he loses his power to boss his partner around.

I'm guessing Alan manipulated Brenda because he needed a patsy to act as a "neutral" third party and witness to his responsibilities. Alan was a dirty cop accepting bribes from gang leaders, so he tried to use Brenda to assuage his colleagues' suspicions and maybe even planned to use her as a scapegoat if he was about to get caught. Fortunately, Brenda witnessed Alan's true self and found the willpower to stand up for herself. In the end, Alan paid for manipulating an innocent woman and his corruption.
