Falconry: Looking for Goshawk nests

  • In this falconry video I teach the basics about looking for goshawk nests. This format is a little different, as I actually take you along in the forest instead of just talking about it at home. I am still recovering from heart surgery and had help and people keeping an eye on the state of my health. It was good to get out and explore and see all of nature and how the eco systems are connected.
    Goshawks have a long history of use in falconry and they are also top indicator species. Their presence or absence is a direct indication of the health of the localized environment.

    I went to a dozen or so active Goshawk nests in Utah, back in the late 70s, early 80s.
    I've been wanting to go back, it's such a beautiful area.😎👍

    Our resident Cooper's Hawk's eyas hatched a few days ago. Can't see them at the angle of the nest but the female has been visiting and talking to us in the garden about 4 acres away from the site so I know she's helping hunt to feed. Fledge should be the first week of July, about normal here in mid Michigan for her. (I consider before mid June an early fledge and after mid July late for her)
    I'm excited, but it took me forever to realize she actually re-used and build up her nest last year's site this year. I was beating pavement all over the place looking for her.

    My dads last bird that he hunted with was a European Goshawk that he traded with merchant marine.
    That was back in the 70's.
    I grew up as a kid kicking bushes for rabbits.
    Now I have a lot of old falconry books and hawk chalk books to find a home for. If anyone out there is curious about what I have just reach out. Ill be at the RMEF Elk calling competition next week in big sky mt.
    God bless your your channel and your healing.

    Excellent video! 👍👍 More of this, please. I like all your videos, but the ones where you're out in the field and/or showing practical applications of your techniques are alway my favorites.
    At first glance the shot of all the spent pine seeds on the ground looked like the base of all the trees, right now, where I'm from - Chicago. The 17 year cicadas are emerging and just about every tree has a mound of exoskeletons.

    Welcome back Ben. Can you fly a drone to view a nest? Would it be attacked? Would the hawks abandon the nest?

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  Před 29 dny

      Depends on the nest. Usually we avoid getting too close to the nest with a drone. Some species it is okay with a zoom, but some species may potentially abandon the nest.

  • @davidirving2006
    @davidirving2006 Před 22 dny

    Ben, an honest question, these two "find the nest" videos will enable unqualified and unlicensed individuals find nests and potentially take birds that they shouldn't. Is having this online a good idea?

  • @raphlvlogs271
    @raphlvlogs271 Před 25 dny

    why are there so many recently died trees in your woodland?

    • @benwoodrufffalconry
      @benwoodrufffalconry  Před 25 dny

      Utah is very much a desert state. Anywhere we get water, woodlands will appear. But the past few years we have had intense droughts that have killed many of our trees. And the intense summer heat the past few years has also pushed many of our pine and fur trees being their limit.
