I have been using a bullet journal for 5 years for trying to keep my life on track. It was just this past year that I joined a quilt guild. I have seen so many great quilt blocks on line or pinterest and some don't have instructions. What to do? I started writing things down on random scraps of paper and that didn't work. I was at Staples one day and found a composition size work book that is !/4" grid paper and that is what I got. It works great and allows me to do scale drawings of the blocks. I make notes and colour them in as far as light/medium/dark tones for blocks. I hadn't thought of it as a bullet journal but I guess it is!! A suggestion for the lady that buys fabric and then forgets what she was going to do with it, guilty too, would be to make a note in a notebook when you first buy it. You could even snip a piece of it and tape it to the notes.

Having a journal or planner is really helpful for getting back on track when "life happens". You know the phrase, "if you want to hear G-d laugh, tell him what your plans are." When the laughing takes a break, go back to the journal/planner and get back on track.

Regarding the trying to remember what I bought a fabric for question: I've started bundling my fabric with the pattern, even just a hand written note attached to the fabric saying what I've got it for IE: "Tote for xxx". As a quilter, costumer and someone who sews my own clothes I've found this solves the problem forgetting what the purchase was for and also saves over-purchasing for projects.

I love that 2 things I enjoy, the Bullet Journal and Quilting, have found a place online where they merge. In my bullet journal I have two goals per week. One is related to home or health (whatever I want it to be) and the other is a creative focus (usually quilt, sewing, crochet related). This gives me simple things I can do to work toward the things I want to achieve. I try to keep it simple so I don’t get overwhelmed.

    ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I'm watching this as Part 3 of bullet journaling!! As I'm watching, I'm laying out the first pages of my first one!
By using a notepad, I first tested whether or not I would A) use it and B) find it useful.
I *have* been doing it AND have found it useful!
I'm somewhat disabled and it's too easy for me to stay in my recliner hand quilting, or working in my sewing room and watching quilting CZcams videos (especially YOURS). I will tend to let dust get 1" thick, or dust bunnies line the hallway, clean dishes *stay* in the dishwasher or let my husband get to his last pair of socks before doing a load of laundry.
LOL 😆 By making a list of tasks I want to accomplish each day helps me to actually *accomplish* things, instead of having a laissez faire attitude of getting things done.
I'm starting realistically and that's a big help to my actually getting things accomplished, rather than being too ambitious and then feeling badly because I didn't get everything done.
Thank you SO MUCH for this series!
    ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I love the ages-old Composition books. The original color was black and white. They now come in more colors. I started writing in a Composition book when I started quilted. Quilting was new for me and I wanted to keep track of what I did. That was about 15 yrs ago. I still write in a composition book. I have a separate book for sewing projects.
Oh! With this kink of bookI can put the date in.
I have tried other planners for my life and don’t continue with them. My husband and one of my daughter’s love to write down what they need to do; and they love checking off the boxes.
It works the opposite for me. I sort of get my back up and walk away. Like you say, Karen we are all different.
    I really enjoy your tutorials!

    HahaHAhaHaHAHAhaHa!
During all three of these videos, looking at your bright green notebook for 2020, I can't help thinking of your 2021 video where you are trying to decide whether or not to burn it. LOL!
But just seeing its clean pages ready to be filled with ideas, plans, hopes & desires, THEN thinking about what a header the world, our lives and our loved ones lives all took. It's shocking! Astounding! And if someone had told us on Jan 1 what was going to happen, we'd have called them mad!
Anyway your little green notebook sticks in my mind and weighs on my heart whenever I see it ❤️

My fabric stash is quite large. Mostly precuts. For 2020, I have put a hold on buying anything new, unless it “speaks” to me and I know exactly what I am using it for. I follow an apparel sew-er on YT, and she had a bullet journal that I really liked. Specifically, her project page. On the left page, list the title, the pattern name and the material needed along with any notes. The right side page, I draw the block, or a portion of the quilt, color it in, write who it is intended for, size, dates started and completed. I do put in a monthly calendar on just one page at the moment and sometimes add projects I want to complete or work on. I have been doing this for a couple of years and it is fun to look back at quilts I have completed and to also look up dates that I have completed a top that is still waiting to be quilted.

My DH was complaining, "Quilting takes up so much of your time." That's because, like you, I make work in fits and starts depending on life and it's schedule. I used your 15/30 minute tip to break down my current project to not only keep me on task, but to also make time for the organizing I need to do. However, quilting is more fun! I did manage to clear off the dining room table for Christmas and reorganize all the quilting odds and ends which had accumulated there. I also used a Micheal's coupon and a sale to get a three tiered cart in which to put the newly organized items and my current hand work project. I have managed to keep the table clean, aside from the cat sleeping on the current UFO. She is now sleeping elsewhere. As she likes it so much, I am going to go turn the orphan block into her new bed. :) Thank you!!!

I really find bullet journalling more efficient and less wasteful. For years I bought dated journals that i ended up throwing away only 1/4 of the way used. With bullet journalimg, I journal when I need it, stop when life is too much and then gather myself back up with the journal.

RE: bullet journal takes too much time. I disagree. I easily make up any time spent creating my bullet journal just by being more more organized and knowing what I need or want to work on when I get in my sewing room. Plus, I feel calm and enjoy sewing more because things seem less chaotic to me when they are written down. To each his own, I guess. Love your vids and I had to buy that timer after I saw yours, it's a great motivator. 😀

I have definitely abandoned a few UFO’s. My first lone star quilt top was so wonky, there was nothing I could do to fix it. I put it in my scrap bin and it eventually got cut up and used in a scrap happy quilt (like a crumb quilt) that I am in love with. I am to the point now where I am challenging myself NOT to buy any more fabric until I use 50% of my stash. Thank you for explaining the circle plan...won’t be using because it would put me in eternal squirrel mode. Lol. Thank you for sharing! Again this is a great video.

I have used washed flannel in small quilts for babies. Like a binder for bullet journal so that I can take out or put in. When I first started quilting I used to put in a sample block. I still have those blocks but now I take pictures of the whole quilt with my i-pod touch (no phone or camera) to refer back to and also to send to family and friends, who are interested, as they give so much positive feedback. Can always use a pat on the back. A binder will also fit with the graph paper. It's tedious to have to measure all lines although I still do that too. Thanks for sharing your expertise.

I started quilting about 5 years ago and I use a black and white composition book. I can start one project and half way through it I start another. I leave about 2-3 pages per project then squeeze everything in, ideas, colors, sizes, math etc. My writing is all over the place. I haven’t made/started many quilts, thus far about 15. Nine are finished , 2 are nearly finished, just need quilting and binding and the others in in different stages of completion. I bought me a planner for 2020! It’s somewhat plain. The outside is colorful but the inside is black and white. I am experimenting with it. If it works out well I will buy a planner for each year that I continue to quilt. My goal is to finish at least 12 quilts this year. (The smallest size being lap size). If my husband sees how hard I am working on these quilts maybe I’ll get my long-arm sooner as opposed to later. Lol

Through the years I have collected fabric for quilts. Some was for specific people and others for charity. I have put each in a large zip lock bag along with the pattern I was planning on using. I also had many quilt tops. Due to now having physical limitations and stamina, I am unable to just sit and sew all day. Those not earmarked for someone specific I am giving to a church quilting group. My only request is that the quilts are given to local charities. They have been used for lap quilts in nursing homes, Habitat for Humanity, children’s centers, etc. My thinking is that having been so blessed, blessing others in return is only the right thing to do.

Some antique tops would just be the go & a backing quilted together for a light weight "summer coverlet" for the warm summer weather. This protects the piecing in the top from fraying. I have also seen in some collections applique tops that are just bound without any backing or batting for a summer coverlet, as there are no raw edges on the top.

Missed your Q & A so better late than never. Being a senior the amount of money spent on fabrics can get out of hand so fast. Seeing other quilter collections is overwhelming to me, but wondering should I have a assortment of fabrics as a base for my new hobby? Another question I have is what does everyone do with there quilts? To justify the money, time spent and if indeed if it’s a gift will they even appreciate the quilt.

    • @JustGetitDoneQuilts
      @JustGetitDoneQuilts  Před 4 lety

That there is the rub. Where do they go and are they appreciated. They are not exactly cheap to make either. I try to be intentional with my gift giving so that I am making something that the receiver actually wants. I also have started making smaller quilts that I experiment new techniques and styles on. The rest goes to charity

I make small quilts for the women's crisis center... most show up with nothing and I like knowing their children will have a warm cuddly blanket. This also uses up my vast stash!! I do this in between gift quilts and other projects....

Carmen, my recommendation is to just buy fabric for the project you want to make. Avoid the temptation to build a stash. Fabrics go out of style, just like clothes, and unless you are a prolific quilter, you’ll find you have spent money on fabrics you no longer like.
Also, Karen gave the advice in one video not to buy more than the pattern calls for. That is great advice. I find most patterns overestimate the amount of fabric you need anyway, so don’t buy extra “just in case”. You’ll just end up with more in your scrap bin.

I can't cut or sew as much as I'd like so I've ended up with a large stash accumulated. Some have specific destinations. I also have generic backing options that I just keep on hand. I should mention that my granddaughter uses it as well. One thing I do to keep quilting is making baby or lap quilts to have on hand for natural disasters like hurricanes or wildfires or tornadoes. I consider them part of my charitable contributions and I always have a place for them to go.

Coming to the Netherlands? it is beautiful here in the Spring, I guess you will be going to Keukenhof... other places of interest outside of Amsterdam are Leiden, Delft and Harlem, only a 30 min train ride away :-)

I'm guilty of buying fabric with something in mind for someone and forgetting who and what later. While you were talking I thought maybe a note and put it with the fabric

I have been making a list of five projects and checking them off as completed. I usually start it at the beginning of each month but I have been trying to figure out how to do this in a bullet journal.

Do it the same way that you have been. If it's working for you there's no need to change it.

Just curious. How did you go from quilting as a hobby to a CZcams channel about it, and I'm guessing, a business? Thanks for the informative videos, and congrats on the plaque from CZcams.
