There has to be something more to it.

Internally there's a problem.
And even if it is because of that statement, you never know what was said between them. Maybe they really are desperate to not talk about the club's situation publicly anymore. It hurts the club more than help it.
For me, what that statement told me is that the attitude is not there. Xavi is making excuses before the season starts, and that's exactly what we don't need. And like what I said, there has to be something more to it.
Plus, plenty made something out of a bad situation. To have your coach concede to the idea that we're inferior, specially publicly, is hurtful to the club.
I think for once, xavi is not treated badly in this instance. He should be more positive. Because if that's his attitude, we won't achieve anything, even if we have a near perfect squad. Because xavi will say it's not perfect yet.

But in Reality, Laporta did make big big signings on Xavi's asking in the 1st midseason and 2nd season such as Ferran for 55 million,Eric Garcia 15m/free then Raphinha 70, Kounde 65, Lewandowski 50, Christensen free, Aubameyang,Alonso and also this season Cancelo,Felix,Romeu. Excluding Felix, all of the above are Xavi's choice. As we know Laporta are trying to bring some players for the next season. Previous season Laporta did sell many of the club assets to support Xavi. Xavi should try to be more rational when he talks. And obviously any club president does not want to show their weakness in the media.

Would not hate to see Thiago Motta as a Barca coach. He's work in Bologna has been awesome, and not just results but also how they have played. Xavi is a good coach but maybe a year or two in some smaller league would not be bad for him and then making a comeback. First I heard about rumors about Motta (From Barcaboy I think) I was very skeptical but it would make sense if Xavi goes. Much rather him than Tuchel, Motta or Conceicao... i dont thinking leaving at this point is the right thing but BARCA is BARCA another coach would come and barca would success.. Pep left and we still succeeded, XAVI is good but we need a bigger more experience coach, we lost against girona because XAVI hasnt managed this boys well. we lead 2-1 and they play like its non there business and Xavi did nothing. Okay let me actually clarify the situation in its context since you seem to be missing some points of the outrage.
Xavi has basically conceded the season, by saying look don’t expect anything. Why not? We’re Barcelona you would never hear Madrid say pessimistic things like that, especially to the public lol.
While renovating the stadium the club have bent over backwards to get funds to carry the operations of signings he specifically requested, from the moment he signed he was given players, i.e ferran was his first signing, it was a huge risk as all of them were and coupled with the fact Xavi gave a lot of positivity in their meeting of continuity. What’s clear is that the club and a lot of board members think xavi should be able to do more with the squad he asked for and they would 100% correct.
I do however agree with the timing of this being poor, as he should’ve been sacked already. The club needs a more disciplined, prepared coach to take great squad to the next level. What people fail to remember is that while the club needs time to get strong they need to win for revenue keep up with the finances. Xavi didn’t need to rehash about the ffp situation in his presser at all, just needed to give encouraging words in support of the squad to be the best next season.
At the end of the day they both can be held accountable in some degree, but the best thing would be to just part ways.
