How To Shade Anything
Vložit
- čas přidán 16. 09. 2023
- Learn a five-step shading process that can be used to shade any subject, from simple objects like a sphere to complex subjects like the human figure. The process starts by dividing light from shadow using the line of termination and darkening all shadow areas to a number three value. It then progresses to darkening the core shadow, refining the values, and adding highlights.

Bye
I’m trying to get back into drawing after not doing it for years. Instead of just grabbing a pad & trying to draw, I’m looking to build up better fundamentals than I did years ago. This was really helpful!
well yea if you learn new fundamentals your art will improve lol had me worried thinking you already knew everything haha happy accidents like the afro dude says
Great. Keep on practicing!
Same!
Kinda weird. I felt like I was sitting next to you and you were telling ME how you do it! Calm voice, a great 5 step plan and examples of execution.
Excellent video.
**You get right to it without subjecting us to your life story**You explain the process in a concise, easy-to-internalize manner**You don’t have loud, irritating techno-pop music playing in the background ** Thanks man. Subbed. 👍🏽
I have made a really good progress regarding proportions, shapes, outlines, but when it comes to shading I’m always lost, I’m learning how to tattoo and I know the shading is key to stand out, this is the first time I actually understood how to make a plan and how to develop it. I’m going to try it out in my own drawings. Thank you so much
Do you try these new tricks on people? 💀😀
(joking)
The way you explain the process is so good. I usually get easily distracted when watching videos like this. But I can't look away from the video. And it's so much easier to understand. Thanks for this
Glad it was helpful, have you checked out the other videos in the shading series? czcams.com/video/8TjpY6HyHfA/video.htmlsi=sY0tXHD_Lv8lggp-
Thank you for showing how you can move from the sphere to a next step. I've been stuck on shapes unsure of how to take that and put into other objects. I saw it, but this demonstration helped it click.
You're welcome. Glad that you're here to learn.
I saw this exact tutorial like approximately few months ago and I just cant thank you enough, I am an artist in digital for around 4-5 years (2024 will mark my 5th year) and this exact shading tutorial just altered my art COMPLETELY. Really I cant, I watched so many tutorials for so many years and this simple 40min shading guide just covering all of that I learned on previously, this tutorial is truthly lifechanging and every, EVERY artist that I will come across in future, Ill send them this if either they struggle with shading or in general need help with art. Its mind boggling how you share this knowlege for free and Im VERY thankfull for that Brent, you are a hero.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I’m glad that you’re here to learn!
I have had this explained to me time and time again and have never really been able to put all the pieces together. Your 5 step process makes perfect sense to me! Thank you, sir
i usually never fully watch any art teaching video, but you explained everything so well and easily (english is not my first language) that i kept looking at your shading process in awe.
thank you for making this video
Glad it was helpful!
This is the first time I really sat down to take notes from an art video, I knew something was lacking in my comprehension of shading and light, but I couldn't put my finger on it. The process you've laid out is straightforward and filled in the blanks I had, many thanks!
Glad that it has been useful for you. Keep on practicing!
No way😮 I had no idea that Brent had a CZcams channel, I love your teaching so much ever since I got your gesture drawing course it's really helping me grow my figure drawing skills
I'm so glad! And I’m glad you’re here to learn!
Me either! I follow him on skillshare. This is so cool.
Did you get all the courses? Are they worth it?? 😁
@@mirabdulrahimshahir9156 I didn't get all of them but what I have was totally worth it
For me all of his courses are worth it. I love how clear he teaches every topic and lesson. Reason why i still keep my skillshare subscription until now. In my own opinion, his art and science of drawing series are gold mine. I always go back to his courses whenever i feel lost in my drawing skills.
This is the first time a shading video has made sense to me. I legitimately could never shade and just avoided it. But this has fixed that issue!
Great to have you here to learn!
This is the best video I've seen on the internet about shading. Well done. An excellent piece of work.
Thank you so much
Brent is so clear and descriptive when instructing. I'm looking forward to his new book, coming next month. Thank you, Brent, for sharing your love of art and your wonderful knowledge on the subject..
You're very welcome! Glad that you're here to learn.
This is very good. I am taking it forward from the very basic technique I learned from TV modules by an artist called Jon Gnagy, must be over 60 years ago when I was in grade school. That understanding still holds good, but this is far more developed. I always thought I would go back to this when I finally retired from a lifetime of work, and here is all this great instruction on the internet I could never have anticipated, just waiting for me. It is a great pleasure and satisfaction to round out this interest that got lost somewhere in childhood. The kid had some little bit of talent, which is still in there, and now lots of time to play and satisfy the urge to create. Many thanks!
Welcome back to drawing. Keep on practicing. Glad that you're here to learn.
I’ve been very curious about this process for many years, and your outline of it finally makes it makes sense to me. Thank you.
You are so welcome!
Best free drawing lesson on youtube, greatly appreciated...
On the brown paper, have you tried using a slightly lighter brown pencil for the light and then the white only for the highlights? Might look like a brown sculpture with your shading prowess
From one teacher to another, you are a damn great teacher.
The step by step approach and explanations will help me draw better, but also help me to improve as teacher.
Keep posting. From the French Caribbean
Thank you! Glad that you’re here!
I understand mid time on toned paper now. Thank you, this video was extremely helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
A fascinating and immensely helpful technique for drawing shadows. Your method helps students get right in there. So many are put off by the long structured courses that emphasise stuff like understanding light, form, and anatomy, as well as a meticulous approach to observation and rendering. All necessary stuff eventually but this allows them to dive right in and still produce good results and hopefully get addicted to art.
Glad that you see the value! Thanks for watching.
Thank you for truly making me understand the shading process!
Glad it was helpful!
I‘m still very much a newbie, couldn’t for the life of me understand shading as it should be, until just now as you have shown and explained, so well, that I have finally comprehended it, now I just have to put it to practice. Thank you so much! You have a calm voice, have taken your time and easily explained it. A very worthy Tutorial! Very much appreciated!
You’re welcome. Glad that you're here to learn!
Hi Brent, thank you so much for this shading process!!! I really wish I had seen this earlier.
Glad it was helpful!
Best example of this method I have seen on CZcams. Thanks for the upload and inspiration.

Those lines are marvelous
Thank you.
Very likeable shading
As an artist, I use various mediums but haven't done much with pencil. am anxious to try it. The instructor explains the process very well. Thanks so much!
Glad that you found it useful.
Wonderful instructions.
I'm glad that you're here to learn!
I'm glad I came across this video. For me, this is the best breakdown of shading. I haven't applied it to my drawings yet (I will later today), but you made me understand shading more than others I came across on CZcams.
Glad it was helpful! Let me know how applying it works for you!
@evolveyourart I applied it. I think it works, but I need to work on Step 5 more.
Thank you for this amazing demonstration ❤
You are so welcome!
Excellent instructions. Thank you so much 😊

@@evolveyourart I will! Thanks!
Some of those female form rendered drawings are exactly how I aspire to draw, I love this video
Yooo this was very informative. Best shading explanation I’ve seen so far. I used to be into art but later dropped out cause of personal issues and it became really frustrating because I never really knew what to do 😂. But as the interest is back I hope I can stick to it and progress
Welcome back, keep on practicing!
Thank you so much for your simple yet very effective technique.

Thank you. You have explained shading on a white vs toned paper, but I would love to see shading example on a white paper too! Thank you again!
Great suggestion! Look for a shading example on white paper in an upcoming video.
I do feel lucky to have your videos
Glad to have you here to learn to draw!
After watching so many videos from last 5 years this is the right one what I was looking for. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I would like to know which pencil you have used to creat so many details in lighter part of the body? If it is the paper then how did you create the difference?
Thank you
You're welcome
really best advice
Glad that it is valuable for you.
thanks a lot
you're welcome
gracias
Superb. You are a great teacher!
Thank you!
I will trust any artist who wears a flat cap.
what often gets missing in these shading things is that people forget that both the light and shadow has a lot of values that you can and should play with to indicate form.
now the second thing is the inherent value of an object also comes into play, if the object is dark there's gonna be a lot less values or shades of dark in the shadow you can use, but in contrast you have a lot more values or shades in the light if the object is dark in value to begin with, and vice versa for a light value object.
the third thing that's kind of interesting about these value structures is that you can make artistic choices where and how defined you want your forms to be, you can be extremely well defined in the values and have a lot of differing values in one area but have less intricate and defined values in another simply to draw attention to a specific area. you can even smudge out edges even the outline of the form aswell, but this might be a bit over the top for beginners but i think it's good to experiment even for a beginner to see what's possible and also make people not feel to hung up on accuracy but focus more on tasteful artistic choices.
Thank you so much for this one. I just could not wrap my head around this subject until you basically spoon fed it to me lol
Glad it was helpful! Glad that you're. here to learn.
Excellent video. I wish I were your student.👏
Finally, there are western drawing tutorials that actually focus on academic art and high quality education. The western art community very much lacks academic training. Thank you!
That's cause we don't have ✨ money ✨
i learn drawing from you in skillshare. very good tutorial, clear guidance, thanks
Glad to hear that.
Great stuff 😊
Thank you! Cheers!
outstanding
Thank you.
Thank you for making such a concise guide and sharing your process for free here!
If you happen to read this comment, I'd love if you could clarify any further on the placement of the reflected light vs. cast shadow under the armpit. I would have expected the reflected diffuse light from yhe ground to light up the cast shadow under the armpit if it tis lighting up the area just next to it.
Undoubtedly your choice of putting a cast shadow there helps communicate the overall values in the drawing- but is this more of an occlusion shadow?
Loved how you explained the steps and different values. If I do a complex still life, would I apply these 5 steps to every object in the still life?
Yes!
thank you
You're welcome
Hi brent, hope you are doing well! Thank you for doing this great work we need more teachers like you i love your drawing style in general I start drawing cause I found you online. Brent I have a question i want to ask you that when we draw with the overhand grip does our hand touch the paper ?
It depends. Generally speaking it's good not to touch the paper with your hand because it can smear pigment depending on what type of drawing media you're using. I sometimes allow my hand to tough the paper at the beginning of a drawing or to soften the image if it's a desired effect. It's just dexterity and practice. You can find answers to many commonly asked questions on my website: www.brenteviston.com/resources
@@evolveyourart Thank you so much brent I appreciate your time and this wonderful reply
Do you also teach shading with hatching? I don‘t like this way of shading using tonal mass.
I might be missing something, but a lot of great artist I like draw with no terminator shadow or a very subtle one. And Im sure they are very professional. May be there are some situations where it can be dropped or is it a style choice?
Very good trick thank you 👏✨👏✨👏✨🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Nice job sir.
Thank you
Thanks
You're welcome
from now on the most holy fours❤
this is a very useful tutorial with a clear explanation of the fundamental shading basics
but for me it's kinda feel like that "how to draw an owl" meme
i understand that all that happened in "step 5" was just a refinement, and yet i feel that a speed paint with some commentaries would help a lot more than a fading transition
(ps and sorry if it sounds like gibberish. english is not my native language)
