"Al Die Willen te Kaap'ren Varen" - Dutch Privateers' Song [Lyrics + Translation]

- Also known simply as "Kaap'ren Varen" or "Mannen Met Baarden", this Dutch folk song reinforces that true privateers should be real men, who know how to get things done and are not afraid of death.
The exact age of this song is unknown; it was first referenced in 1856, though there are other versions dating centuries back. This (albeit more modern) version was recorded by Ancora in 2013. The first line means literally "sail to hijack", meaning privateering or commission sailing (privately owned ships who are hired by a government for use in war).

In the 16th century, the Low Countries were under the authority of the Spanish-Habsburg Empire. Between 1568 and 1648, they sought less taxation, more self-government, and religious tolerance from Spain; a struggle that transformed into a war of independence that became known as the Eighty Years' War.
Placing himself at the head of the revolt, Willem van Oranje needed soldiers to combat the formidable Spanish armies. He made diplomatic alliances, raised militias, hired mercenaries, and also turned his attention to a group of desperadoes and pirates known as the Watergeuzen (Beggars of the Sea).
From 1569, Willem van Oranje made official privateers of those who until then had been criminal pirates. Under the command of a succession of daring and reckless leaders, the Sea Beggars were transformed into an effective and organized fighting force against Spain.
This was the birth of Dutch privateering, a business that would one day grow to form a global empire and one of the most powerful naval forces in the world. - Hudba
It sounds like a pirate song
I mean the line between privateer and pirate is quite literally a matter of perspective
@@thomastheawesome4822For Dutch: privateer
For Spaniards: pirate
@@pablogarcia.05 it extends far beyond that. There's another CZcams channel that explains it very well.
I think it was against the pirates 😂
Edit: well not think I’m Dutch, but I learned history of this period of time, and people where 1,5 years on a ship just to go from Netherlands to India or Indonesië, 1/3 of crew died for sure and the rest got sick or else. And when they arrived they had to back for 1,5 year. There is a really interesting small docu about VOC and why Dutch people joined it (not good but lies). I try to find it and put it under this comment!
"Pirate? Nay, privateer. On a sanctioned mission under the protection of the crown!"
Bro. Only now do I read the lyrics.
This goes so hard, and yet it has the most stupidly funny lyrics I’ve ever seen.
Altijd voor Nederland, Nederland voor Altijd.

I love that he put some dutch history in the description and the watergeuzen were protestant refugees that fled years before when the Spanish inquisition came under comand of duke Alva

It's a great song, in both Dutch and German. ( Altho i have to say i do prefer it in dutch because it's my native language :P )

Man, this is some superb pronounced Dutch, maybe even overly pronounced. Good to hear this clear-as-water ABN!!
The song isn't actually from the Netherlands, but from Dunkerque in Northern France. In the 17th Century Dunkerque was part of the Spanish Netherlands (now Belgium), and it was a centre of privateering. Its local privateers worked for the Spanish and mostly targeted French ships. This period ended when the French conquered the city in the 1650's.
The song is in Dutch because that's the language that was historically spoken in Dunkerque (Duinkerken).

i'm not sure but i'm pretty sure it's supposed to be Piet, Joris as opposed to Pier, Tjoris

No, that's a modern bastardized version
Those are probably the Old-Dutch versions of the names
well it is correct, same with other names that have been bastardised like anton, which used to be Antonius from Latin.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Pirates of the Caribbean's theme song was based on this
Why else is the Flying Dutchman (which was a real ship, documented in Zeeland, commanded by the VOC and it's Captain, who according to legend, sailed out of Cape Town during storm, he would not listen to advice of his crew and the ship would never reach its destination of Batavia. It would however appear in the horison now and then. In the movie it's not a fluyt because it's Disney but it's funny they brought the ship in.
why do I miss some lines ? 🙂 Is this a shorter version ?
Yeah, original had:
Al die ranzige tweebak lusten (All who'll eat the rancid hard tack)
Al die deftige pijpkens smoren (All who smoke on stately pipes)
Al die met ons de walrus kelen (All who hunt for Walrus with us)
Al die de dood en de duivel niet duchten (All who don't fear death or devil)
yeah, there are several versions, the longest one is by the whale-catching-sailors version. This one is weirdly dutch, most versions were western-flemish or from the coastal regions of Zeeland.
@@thombrickThis is more Low Saxon Dutch. I can tell you because I'm Low Saxon myself and I know that one of the singers, Harm Wolters, is from my area.

Why is this dubbed so weird? My name is Joris but it says Tjores 🤣 and Pier 😂
Pier is actually a Dutch-Frisian name, I have an uncle with that name. Maybe the song is turned into a Frisian sensitive song. :-)
Could also be French influence from the name Pierre mixed with Piet
I think he just assumed the T at the end of Piet was actually part of the next name.
@@gravina03 ah that sounds about right. I think its very funny tho.
@@yakovendelman7659 I think it has an Frankish origin. As the great Frisian rebel king Pier Gerlofs Donia (aka Grutte Pier, Great Pier) was living in the 1100's. He wanted to restore the Frisian homeland of Magna Frisia (The Frisian Freedom)

South Netherlands
Bro won 1 independence war which i don't even feel bad about cause yeah our retarded tyranical monarch at the time abused the land he got from the treaty of westphalia and now cause of that calls us enemies and throws thousands of years of shared cultural history down the drain.
I'm not mad, i'm dissapointed.
The Southern Netherlands (modern day Belgium and parts of northern France) fought together with the Northern Netherlands against Spanish tyranny, however the Southern Netherlands didn't gain independence. They were not enemies of ours, they were (and still are) our brothers.
