Just found your channel about building a board on board cedar fence and I've got to say, it is amazing work! My grandpa was a carpenter and built cabinets and pretty much anything from scratch, including the backyard privacy fence that I'm looking at replacing, similar to the one you and your husband built. Now I understand how much work, time, and effort goes into making such beautiful pieces. Love the results!

My God! You are awesome! I saw Pt 2 first and was completely impressed. I had no idea that in addition to all the work in Pt 2 you also had 4" metal pipe you had to cut and weld. I try to do very complete work on my projects but that cutting and welding in addition to everything else put you in a league of your own!!! Damn, girl, that was awesome! I don't want to offer my approval because that always seems condescending to me. Rather I'd like to offer my total appreciation and respect!

I really need a new fence, and hope I can find the supplies that I can afford, beings I’m on a super tight budget. I don’t want to use wood, due to rotting, and I’m looking for something that will last for years! I have learned to use electric tools since I have become single, and I am very proud of myself. I want to use poles like that, due to the price,& longevity because they won’t rot but I saw where I can buy poles “in a bundle” and it will last longer. I am so impressed with your work and smart idea!❤. I hope you don’t mind me watching your video 100 times, lol! I’m trying to figure out how to attach the 2X4’s to the steel/metal poles. Gotta do it myself, but ❤the ingenuity you came up with. U R SO SMART. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks for your input… peace and love from Alabama country.

Tip: Use a wind sock on your microphone. The outdoor news reporting folks have these kinds of microphones. I use wire wheels or wire cups from Harbor Freight for rust removal, esp on curves. Fantastic job on the fence, April! You have a great partner in your husband. What a nice man!

Good man right there! Also, you don't have to grind that paint off, if it's just paint or even galvanized you could get by with a flap disc. Less sparks and easier to manage if you're new to the grinding world. You have came so far in your creative workings!
It's been so hot, April. I don't know how you've been doing all of that in this heat--especially the welding. I give you a lot of credit for that. (I'm a displaced Yankee, though, so I usually wilt when the thermostat hits 90°.) Still, I started sweating just watching you work in your welding attire. That fence is going to look great from the sound of it. I'm anxious to see the rest of the progress. It was nice to see your husband helping you like that. You're right. You found a keeper. You're doing a great job. Drink a lot of water and watch out for the mosquitos.
No doubt that you are one tallented gal!! I can understand you working the heat as I live across the state line north, just 8 miles south of Kansas on Hwy 75.See the lake west of the hwy.Any way, please be careful when welding that you use compete coverage as the ultraviolet light that the welder gives off will burn your skin worse that the sun. I was a Navy welder in the early 70's. I enjoy your videos. I will be retiring in a couple of years and want to do some small woodworking projects, so I will probably be asking you a few questions now and then. Keep up the good work. You are an asset to the wood working field.
Not sure...I'll ask my dad, he was in the Air Force- worked on repairing missile complexes in North Dakota before he got out, haha. You can actually buy abandoned missile sites in the Dakotas, Nebraska, etc.
In that kinda heat screw the DIY i'd be in that pool, absolutely love that even when faced with a daunting task or something sightly outside of your comfort zone you dive in feet first and don't let it deter you from attempting the task at hand massive props I love watching all the female makers like yourself and Laura Kampf :)
I get that this was shot two years ago, but I watched it just now. So in my mind you're - just now - played chainsaw roulette. Chainsaw injuries are brutal.
Great job april, Only tip i have for mig welding I have is keep the mig torch close to the weld for 10 or so seconds so the protective gas can coat the weld. other than that amazing job. I love metal working and had went to welding school. But now thanks to you i recently invested into impact drivers and drills and attempting to build a nice coffee table and workbench. thank you for so much inspiration. :)
You did more work I would have been wiling to do on a fence. It's turning out AMAZING! Good thing you have a variety of DIY skills for all the different things you want to do, to upgrade the fence.
Well to hire the job out would cost close to 11K, so I don't mind putting in the work to save a lot of money. Glad you're liking it so far! Yeah, this project was really really cool because all the things I've been learning over the past few years really came together. : )

I was just thinking, watching the sparks fall, that my tinder box back yard would go up, take out the mountain immediately behind me, and start another major CA wildfire here in the bone-dry LA area, and then you said to watch out for fires, and had to run and put one out :-D

Looks great! Extending the poles is a nice touch. The builder that did our fence was also extremely careless. We are dreading the redo but are now a bit more motivated.
Eek, good luck! It's a lot of hard work but it's something I really enjoyed. If my fence wasn't in such bad shape I would have waited until it was cooler though. It's a ton of savings doing it yourself!

Awesome! I have also saved money purchasing from my local hardware store. It makes me so happy. I always check there first and even if it is a little more than the box store, I save that in gas🤷

It is all about the team work; I love it! I really enjoy watching your video's and wish they could be longer. its enjoyable when the explanations are short and to the point like yours. to many try to show superior knowledge by over explaining every detail of what the are doing; your methods are so much nicer to sit through. As a fellow DIY'er, I don't watch so much to learn but just let my inner child be the watcher i have always been. Its a great way to build a library of information to help ideas and solutions come out when needed. As soon as you said you would be extending the posts i knew you had this project in planning for a while and now see why you got the welder and practiced with it. as a personal note, i would have saved the old bolts and only replaced or added what was needed but, that is only because i am a believer in not letting good, usable materials go to waist. read that as, "I'm don't have a lot of expendable cash," lol. Keep up the great work and I'll be watching for your next video! I would wish you good luck on your project but you have the skills that don't rely on luck!
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I wanted to make this video longer but it's such a huge job that I wasn't able to finish the next step before it was time to edit and produce the video so it's being pushed to next week. :) Since the previous owner used carriage bolts, it would have been waaaay too much work to try and save them. I would have had to pull each picket off the old stringers to expose the head then hammer each one out. Since I didn't want to use carriage bolts on the new fence there was no incentive for going through the effort. However, I hear ya about upcycling when possible!
This must be a very popular type of fencing in the F.W. area. My dad had the same type in his backyard. Looking forward to part 2 April. Looks good so far.
I don't know if you did or not, but for everyone else, this is where you want to use that type of welder with flux core, not shielding gas. If you use gas with wind like that, you're not going to get a great weld because the wind is blowing the gas away, but you could weld all day in a wind storm with flux core.

It's good that you're wearing a full-face helmet when using the grinder - those blades are known to break and grinder accidents are no joke

Stringers only need to be level if the ground is, parallel to ground and each other is what your after...love your videos by the way

Good Job April. Take extra precautions if you do weld galvanized, the smoke is bad, also be mindful of lead paint.

Thanks Jon. Yeah it is, but it's a lot of fun. Tons of different steps so it kept things interesting.....the few new tools to try out helped out with that as well. ; )
Awesome improvement. I have wanted to try welding maybe one day I will stumble across a good deal on a welder. Can't wait for part Two.

It is all about the team work; I love it! I really enjoy watching your video's and wish they could be longer. its enjoyable when the explanations are short and to the point like yours. to many try to show superior knowledge by over explaining every detail of what the are doing; your methods are so much nicer to sit through. As a fellow DIY'er, I don't watch so much to learn but just let my inner child be the watcher i have always been. Its a great way to build a library of information to help ideas and solutions come out when needed. As soon as you said you would be extending the posts i knew you had this project in planning for a while and now see why you got the welder and practiced with it. as a personal note, i would have saved the old bolts and only replaced or added what was needed but, that is only because i am a believer in not letting good, usable materials go to waist. read that as, "I'm don't have a lot of expendable cash," lol. Keep up the great work and I'll be watching for your next video! I would wish you good luck on your project but you have the skills that don't rely on luck!
I'm glad you enjoy the videos! I wanted to make this video longer but it's such a huge job that I wasn't able to finish the next step before it was time to edit and produce the video so it's being pushed to next week. :) Since the previous owner used carriage bolts, it would have been waaaay too much work to try and save them. I would have had to pull each picket off the old stringers to expose the head then hammer each one out. Since I didn't want to use carriage bolts on the new fence there was no incentive for going through the effort. However, I hear ya about upcycling when possible!
sorry, I must of lost the carriage bolt part and thought you replaced old lag bolts; its all good. Looking forward to seeing the completed project! :)
This must be a very popular type of fencing in the F.W. area. My dad had the same type in his backyard. Looking forward to part 2 April. Looks good so far.
Yeah I agree, almost everywhere I drive people are throwing up board on board. We wanted it for the complete privacy.
Use fluxcore wire instead of the gas outside the wind is blowing all your shielding gas away.

I have watched a few of your videos and all I can say is...I think I love you!!!
I don't know if you did or not, but for everyone else, this is where you want to use that type of welder with flux core, not shielding gas. If you use gas with wind like that, you're not going to get a great weld because the wind is blowing the gas away, but you could weld all day in a wind storm with flux core.
