Great info! Positive first impression but don't understand why smaller gas tank if true on 20% better mileage the 6 gallon tank would have been great. Colors if you can't get black trim-exhaust, wheels etc on touring model it's deal breaker for me! White with black exhaust and wheels would look great.
You could always get the Gold Wing bagger and add the color-matched trunk.
Love your professional quality videos. Looking forward to your future vids.
To CruiseMans Garage. Thank you very very much! I have been a fan of the Honda Gold Wing since it first arrived in the United States! My "bucket-list" dream, is to have a machine like this!
Love the info thanks, liked and subbed.
ERROR: In this video I said the GPS is a Garmin, and that is incorrect, it is HARMAN.
DataRiderUTube...The GPS is by Harmon. Saw that on another video. Cruiseman...Reading the manual Honda tells how to place the two full coverage helmets in the trunk. It also tells you that some helmets may not fit depending on the helmets design...
Great! video Cruiserman. I did some pricing online and I see that it is a very expensive option to add a CB radio to the bike. Depending on how much they charge for labor for the install, it could be up to $1500 to $1700 option. And that does not include the headsets if it is a wired system. You could be looking at another $400.
What I am not clear on is whether or not the CB will be Bluetooth or hardwired.
When you get some information on that, can you let me know.
I personally prefer to Bluetooth and already run with a Sena 20s and Freewire so that my CB is wireless.
Nice. Very nice. Professionally done. Very nice content with an intelligent presenter. Thank you for this.
Thanks. Picking up my new 2018 Gold Wing Tour DCT today. Watch for new videos soon!
cruisemansgarage I'll be watching for them.
Anxious to get my 1st GoldWing in the spring - then to find people to ride with in Wyoming. That GLForum site doesn't work though, looks like it's for sale.
Maybe this has already been asked, but are the valves using hydraulic lifters now for automatic adjustment, something I didn't like about the previous1800? Still riding a 1500 and 13.5 other types, oh how bikes use to be cheaper. At my age I have to keep thinking, will I have time left in my life to get over 100,000 miles on another new motorcycle?
Hi, will you be making a set of *Cruiseman's Goldwing Basics DVDs* for the 2018 Gold Wings?
Absolutely.
Great review. Thank you. However what about highway peg/board attachment Cruiseman?
Not to worry. The engine guard protectors in the front have covers that can be easily removed. Someone will come up with a mounting for that.
The right hand side pocket locks so I put my garage door opener there. Safe when away from the bike.
Sir, you deserve more subscribers ;)
Well, help me spread the word by sharing my videos! Thanks.
Great video.Could not justify selling my'04(barge with 19k) to buy a bike with no change in engine size/performance and no 6th gear up to '17 model. The changes out way the few negatives for me .Love my bike but always thought it was a little to big/heavy . They've checked off a few of my boxs. 90 less lbs, added 6th,slimmer ,adj.windschield, more power with better gas milage ect.I think I'll wait to the '19 model, if the trunk gets a little bigger and 1st yr bugs are worked out . i'm sold.
I am going to figure out a way to live with the smaller trunk. I would bet Honda or a 3rd party comes out with a larger trunk as an optional purchase.
I can store a full size helmet in the right side bag of my F6B. Any idea if the 2018 version can do the same? Also, any idea if they put the air filter in a more logical spot for easy replacement on the 2018 version?
Saddlebags are going to be smaller than the F6B, or that is my understanding. I doubt if the air filter location has changed.
Cruiseman I was wondering if with the DTS model even though it is automatic if there was still the option to shift it manually? I find it very useful to be able to downshift going into a curve and sudden stops when surprising and sometimes unexpected instances to do so crop up. I like to use the engine compression along with the brakes to stop or slow down the bike without completely relying solely on the brakes.
I think you mean DCT (Dual-Clutch Transmission), and yes, there are paddle-shift levers on the left hand controls. This is the same transmission technology used on Formula One race cars and Ferraris. Very high tech and very reliable.
Yes, there up and down shift buttons on the 7 speed DCT.
You can also get a foot shifter.
Thanks for the great information! So far it looks like a homerun - however I’m having a very hard time reconciling the smaller luggage capacity and gas tank on what is supposed to be the iconic touring bike! I’m assuming a full face helmet won’t fit into the sidebags?
They say you can get two full face helmets in the trunk, but I doubt it. No way you will be able to get a helmet in the saddlebag.
cruisemansgarage Ugh I was afraid you were going to say that. To me it is inexcusable. The Honda PR rationale - that the average use of the Goldwing will be for a weekender when the luggage capacity will be enough - is not in tune with the needs of American consumers who dont plan to the likely, average scenario. This is why we like cars with 400 miles of range in a car when we seldom ever go that far on a single trip. We want flexibility, insurance and a little extra “just in case.”
Well they say the trunk Is removable, give a bit of time lets see if the after market makes one that is for long haul trips.
Verne Brown That’s what I was thinking / hoping too.
top box holds 2 full face helmets. Don't care about luggage capacity. Same range with smaller tank because the mileage is better.
I don't see any am-fm antenna, so if they are using, sat.style antenna, wonder how the reception will be
It is hidden in the trunk area
Like to see a picture of the Gold Wing Tour without the tour pack mounted.
I think you will find it looks almost identical to the Gold Wing. Apparently, you can even add a trunk to the Gold Wing.
Hill start assist is a considerable innovation !
Goldwing Channel Most F-150 have Hill assist. Not that new in the automotive Arena.
Yes, it should be a welcome feature.
It's been in BMW for 6 or 7 years now so nothing innovative from Honda
Except that it will be covered under a 3 year warranty with an expansive dealer network.
Studebaker had a hill holder in the early 60's. great video very informative, a bit better cruiser than mine. 96 600 f3 I rode a goldwing back in 1975. smooth and fast for its time. I had a 750 honda that ran high11's at the time and i was impressed with the power. I'm 65 now and still make long trips on my f3,it loves the blue ridge mountains. I live 600 miles from the tail of the dragon, might buy a wing, after 500 miles in a day im ready for a motel, but i get almost 60 mpg on highway on premium gas f3 has 12to1 copression. Thank's for posting
If your phone is plugged in, is there a button you can press while driving to answer it without pulling out the phone or trying to find that little tiny button that the have on some of the ear bud head sets? Its hard to answer a phone using that with driving gloves on. Trying to pull the phone out would be very distracting to driving the bike.
Yes, on the left control set there is an answer button that you can use to answer a call or place a call.
Any idea if the valve lash check intervals are still in the 32,000 mile range?
I believe it is shorter, maybe 25,000 miles. There is an owner's manual posted on TheGLForum.com
Question I have with this digitized motorcycle, can you do your own oil changes etc or you have to go to dealer to wipe clean dash warnings?
I have studied the dash and don't see any maintenance lights.
Effective 10/30/2017, EagleRider has removed all its Gold Wings (2014 -2017) from its rental fleet. Bummer. There may be one or two locations that keep the wings ... but for 95% of USA there will be no more Wings for rent ... so you will not have the chance to rent the older models with bigger storage capability.
Interesting
Wonder why... maybe they plan to add the new 2018 model to their fleet??
Sorry if this has been covered but is there any info on the air filter access?
Jack Peters No personal knowledge, but a long time gold winger told me it was easy on the new bike.
Hey cruiseman, got your reply, that's what the official Honda suits say as to why the new GL is what it is. Having two 1500's and two 1800's (current bike is a 2010) it makes no sense to me for the GL to have as much storage as a Sport Touring bike! As for your trailer fix, I don't do trailers on motorcycles and at least in the most current 2017 model Honda owners manual it specifically says to NOT tow a trailer with the GL. I think Honda lost me as a customer, I just may end up with a HD!
I think if enough folks out there are in your situation (and it appears there are quite a few), I suspect Honda or an aftermarket company will come up with an option for a larger trunk.
I also won't pull a trailer, but I always had a trailer hitch with a small rack carrier which works great. Keeps all the weight down low and I can just take the travel bag into the motel.
What about the routine maintained How much does an oil change cost?
Have not checked with what dealers charge. DCT will cost a bit more because of clutch filter and o-ring. An extra quart of oil over previous models.
I can't wait to put my hand on this bike. One of my main question is...Are you still going to have to spend 2 hours just to change the air filter??????????????????
My guess is. Yes! Because of the engine design and the fuel injection on top of the engine, the air filter stacks right on top. What we don't know yet, is how difficult it will be to remove the top shelter.
I noticed you show the new Goldwing manual. Where can I get a copy? Thanks! Gary
Thank You !
I don't think the GPS is Garmin.
one thing that occurs to me is that this bike has far more technology in one place than the vast majority of cars. I drive an new Acura which is known to be heavy on the technology...the new wing is equal or greater than that. With multiple ways of adjusting the suspension, throttle response, traction..not to mention the communication system, audio system, etc, etc...that's a lot of distraction coming at a rider. there is a concept called "task loading" that deals with multiple concurrent, or near concurrent, tasks and distractions coming at a vehicle operator..when the operational standards are as high as they are on a motorcycle a task loaded operator could have a problem keeping up...not a good thing in general, but potentially lethal on a motorcycle
Hi, do you know if this bike has stainless steel pipes? My original ones rusted away and I had to replace them on my old Goldwing
I don't know, but I doubt it because of the expense.
I seen the actual bike. That truck looks small. Two full face fit in my GL1800 when carefully placed with little issue, and will little room remaining. I'm wondering if Honda is referring to a New Specific Honda Helmet made specially to fit in this trunk? I doubt my helmets would come close to fitting in this trunk. The new front end, 4 valve heads and 6th gear, I wish I had. The small luggage and smaller tank, are a definite, No Can Do!!
I was wondering the same thing about the 2 helmet claim. I can barely fit 2 helmets in my 2012 trunk, and CANNOT fit them with the Sena BT headsets installed. On the 2018, you are REQUIRED to have BT headsets. NO WAY you can fit 2 helmets into that trunk.
Just how can one obtain copy of the owner's manual for this bike?
www.theglforum.com/forum/motorcycle-discussions/general-motorcycle-discussion/gold-wing-2018/86416-2018-manual
I believe this bike is a major improvement over its predecessor. However. Honda is eerily silent on the HP/TRQ numbers. Why is that?
Not sure why. Someone will stick one on a dyno for sure.
I forgot, does the new Goldwing offer GPS by default or it's an option? Because some of us have GPS apps in our smart phones already. For instance I have TomTom which I update and could use it by connecting it to Apple car system of the bike.
Great video thanks a lot
GPS is standard equipment on all models.
Great thanks
Oil filter orientation is worse than the earlier gl1800. You get oil running all over your wrench and hand. Wear nitrile gloves. Also the filter is difficult to remove without a cup style wrench.
Does the 6 speed manual have a hydraulic clutch?
Yes
This a great looking and tech heavy bike for sure. But, I don't need a computer to decide what gear I should be in. And, hill start assist...really? What's the use riding a motorcycle if all the control, i.e., is taken away? If, I can't control the bike then it's time to hang up the keys! I agree with the other comments as to the loss of luggage space and fuel capacity. Most GoldWingers ride many, many miles and I for one, when riding solo, do not want to pull a trailer on a week or two long trip. Also, most Wing owners like accessorize their rides with lights, etc. It doesn't look like we have many options with the 2018. I just don't understand all of Honda's logic behind this years Wing and don't think I'll be giving up my '17 any time soon!
You would probably be better off with the manual transmission bagger model, less electronics and less money too!
Does the new GL have helmet holders/locks??
Yes. They are located under the passenger grab rails.
Something I noticed when it was first released, was the lack of under the trunk helmet locks. If two helmets won’t fit into the trunk, and there’s no helmet locks, that’s going to be an issue.
There are helmet locks, but they are located under the passenger hand rails.
So what does one do when the battery dies in the Bluetooth helmet?
Well, I have been using a BT headset for the last 6 months. Mine will easily go 8 hours, but needs recharging each evening after use.
not a bad time on use, now is there a charger that can charge from bike? I camp a lot not always with power.
It has usb jacks that can be used for that.
the question is IS there a charger that will charge from the bike in this case USB ports not just 120 volt.
You only ride 8 hours a day?
Love your videos! Professional looking and well designed. Only question is why not invest in a quality microphone? Thanks for the videos! Keep up the great work! :)
Dave Lau He needs to hang some curtains or install some sound deadening material on the walls out of view of the camera. That'll get rid of the hollow echo.
It's not the mic, it is my lousy studio with wood floors. Too much echo. I am working on it!
That is the plan
he needs a make up man too to hide those baggy eyes.... but he is the best. just imagine if he had a anchor lady to help him with the narration..... cheers
It's bad lighting :(
If it's anything like the 1800, I wouldn't run regular in it. I rented an 1800 to run around Canada and it pinged so much I even put better quality fuel in it because I felt bad for that poor mill.
I've read that modern engines can withstand a lot of pinging, but I prefer still prefer that they don't do that when I'm on them.
Not sure what "regular" is in Canada, but I have always run 87 octane fuel in my Goldwings with no pinging. I have even gone as low as 86 with no problem. The term "regular" can differ depending on the region. If you were running 84 or 85 octane, it could definitely be on the margins.
It's 87 in the US too. Lay into the gas from low rpm and you'll hear it. A lot of bikes that are supposed to run on regular do it. My FJR did it and my Versys 1000 too, though that it happens less often on that one.
I had a Victory Cross Roads that was supposed to run on 87. It had no issues with pinging, but once while making a full throttle pass, two up, the engine knocked violently. That's a much worse condition.
87 works fine in my old Pontiac and Subaru, but I'm not a fan of it in modern bikes.
I will have to check it when I get my 2018. Honda claims you can run 87.
ME GUSTARIA TENER UNA GORRA COMO LA SUYA...SOY DE PUERTO RICO.
Hill start assist how about learning to ride properly
I think it may be more important for those with DCT.
With so much technology you have to wonder what might go wrong. For example, if the hill stop assist feature engaged, but then didn't release. Shit happens. And the DCT, well that's mighty convenient. But what happens when you mount a non DCT
later in the day, and have to remember everything that wasn't there an hour before? Nnrrgghh. I think I'll just walk, thanks.
.
.
Not designed for those comfortable / ecstatic about a previous, or ... current, bloated inflexible life on a family room couch / "coffin".
Teu kabeuli .....
Front suspension, hill start and electronic suspension is copied from BMW.
Just because BMW had the technology first is not evidence that Honda "copied" BMW. The Honda suspension is similar in appearance to BMW, but is a patented design. Honda was just later to the game with these technologies.
Bmw has had this front suspension for almost 20 years, the electric suspension for almost 15 years and the hill start for over 5 years.
It is completely unbelievable that Honda made the trunk too small to easily fit a full sized helmet, let alone two large helmets and some additional items! It is completely unacceptable to have to go to the after-market for ANYTHING for a $30,000 motorcycle. I will not buy the a Gold Wing until the storage space issue is fixed.
not for nothing but it you are going to buy a bike this technically advanced get a car.......im not knocking the bike ....its a great ride. just saying
Not enough storage, over 30 Liters less than the last generation 1800...........WTF Honda!
It is a different bike for a different generation of rider. Most serious touring riders have a trailer anyway.
Differents:
Harley - tavern to tavern
Honda - coast to coast
I understand that you have since made more current videos where you are actually on the bike and have physically seen the bike. However, this particular video is pretty useless as you have a lot of uncertainties. I don't watch videos to hear from someone who hasn't even sat the bike.
My feedback would be, don't post videos unless you have first hand knowledge, it's a good way to get someone hurt if you are "speculating" about how something works. Your comment about the trunk and the possibility of having two helmets fit - you yourself said "I've got to see it for myself" and a lot of "Maybe's". That doesn't instill a lot of faith in your video.
Just my 2 cents. Like I said, you have some good videos on things you've actually used, but this one sucks.
