Have you ever been to Catalina Island? When I lived in Riverside Cali as a teen (80's) we had a house on the island clear at the top of Avalon and the views were awesome and we would stay every weekend though the summer. The seals were so fun to play with (we were told not to but kids you know). The "Airport in the Sky" sits on a mountaintop, 1,602 feet above sea level and drops straight off at each end making for scary take offs and landings in a little cessna.

I'm loving this trip. I was a trainee at Ft Ord (near Carmel) in the Fall of 1967. I took a bus trip to San Francisco to see the sights and hitch hiked down the coast back to the Army base. It was so beautiful and I got to meet a lot of nice folks. A US Coast Guard family took me the last 20 miles and dropped my right at the front gate to Ft Ord. It was an adventure I will never forget.

We stayed in Lucy's room. In the old days when woman got engaged, they tested their diamond ring by trying to write on glass. One window in Lucy's room still has the 100 year old window pane on which Lucy scribed her name with her engagement ring! They also serve and amazing breakfast where everyone sits around the same table, so you can meet people and tells lies.... er, uh stories. Ha ha!

Can I tell you my story about Cambria by the Sea? In 1984 my wife and two kids and I headed to L.A. from Colorado Spings. We were driving a 1978 Toyota Corrolla we bought new for window sticker about $4700. Daughter born in '82 and son in '75. We spent a week or two around L.A. and drove down to SanDiego, Salton Sea and into Mexico. We drove thru Beverly Hills and had snobs yell at us to go back to Colorado. I had heard of them doing that to people from Oklahoma, but not Colorado. When we left we up the PCH to her father and stepmothers home in Point Reyes in Marin County, where he owned the Point Reyes Light, a pultzer prize winning newspaper and where the people go tired of the money time and effort to re-elect him mayor so once and for all elected him mayor in perpituity. The PCH at the time, ended in Point Reyes. On our trip up there, wife and daughter were in the back, son and I were in the front. In those winding roads right before Cambria, right before sunset, I came to spot around a curve where the sun was reflecting off the ocean so strong I could see nothing. When we went in the shadow of a pillar of rock I could see I was in the oncoming lane in front of an 18 wheeler lumbering up the grade. We were both going slow enough that all that was hurt on the truck was a fender that had to be pried out and the bumper too, on one side. Our toyota was a sad totalled mess. No one hurt more than scratches and bruises for us in the front seat, back seat not hurt at all, just shook up. The truck driver was exteremly kind. He was from just south of us in New Mexico. When the HP got there I was sure I was in for a ticket, but no. He gave none! The wrecker was on the way for the car. He took us into Cambria. They treated us like you wouldn't believe great. Like honored guests even! The whole town. They gave and I mean gave us a room. Took us down and we got everything out of the car, and we loved that little car. They said this happened all the time and showed us news paper articles. About once a week or so. Many much worse results than ours. Cambrian people had come together to rally around those in our predicament. We called my father-in-law and he started on his way to get us in his 1966 white Malibu, which caught on fire on the way back to S.F. (minor, easily fixed). I had been stationed at the Presidio in the sixties and had stayed with them, so I knew my way around. We rented a new car in S.F. and headed home, stopping for awhile at my cousins in Sacremento.
I had been looking to trade the Toyota in on a new 3 series BMW in springs and they wanted to give me $2500
for it. Since the wreck was in Cali and the car was worth a lot more there, the insurance gave me $4500 on a six year old car that was $4700 new. Win win!

If you go through Dana Point a stop at the Hobie Surfboard shop would be nostalgic and in tune with the year your chevy nova was young.

Aw man such a fun trip! My wife and I stayed at the Fogcatcher Inn for the first night of our honeymoon, then went down to Pismo for a few days. The area from Avila Beach at the south and Cambria to the north is my favorite area of the state, so pretty and chill.

It’s a shame I’ve been to both LA and San Francisco when I was younger but never drove from one to the other
