    The smoothness of the flow in the early dark stars, especially the early 70's, are unmatched in later years. In some regards, the later ones seem almost contrived whereas these seem almost a natural flow of musical talent combined. It seems that everyone in the band here is totally connected, not rushing any part through, not trying to dominate. Just wonderful. Of course, saying that, there are exceptions to the rule. Miami 10/26/89 was a phenomenal one, but for the most part, this is the heart of it.

    • @alembic65

      Mr. Pinger sir you speak facts. 72 through 74 is the absolute pinnacle of the band. Quite frankly the sound, dynamic, and overall approach to music is starkly different from the early 70s to the later years. They were still trying to "prove" themselves in certain respects and the argument can be made they simply didn't have bad nights in this era. They were on every night and seemingly getting better as time progressed. Keith was just outstanding and Billy is an entirely different drummer by himself. But that's just my take on it

  • @sunnysideamps

    Some parts are so relaxing you could just drift off to sleep if you are listening with your eyes closed, while at the same time it can sound like a nightmare. Beautifully dissonant, and certainly explorative with the 'Tiger Jam" and "Feedback" sections. Pigpen comes in at the all the right spots. This is the longest Dark Star I've heard. Wow O_O

    • @CalDiscs
      @CalDiscs Před 8 měsíci

      I believe this is the longest sole Dark Star they ever played. It's even longer if you count it's transition into Sugar Magnolia (which you have heard if you have listened to Europe 72, yep, they took that sugar mag off of the longest dark star). I think there's also one that transitions into Sing Me Back Home that is also quite long, off this tour, but this one barely edges it out. It's gorgeous though.

    What does this bring up for you? I placed my ninth four leaf clover of the last three weeks in my tattered napkin, folded over once and pressed between the plastic bag from the United flight I took sometime last year or maybe years ago. I found the clover during the drums of this song on 5/11/22, my first listen. I felt the pain of loss. I felt the reality of my delusions. Of holding on to wispy ghosts and longing to be caressed by his love again. I remember the days where i longed to touch you in your apartment, your glowing glance inviting a graze from my fingertips, but I was so scared id wake up from my dream if I touched you. But those where the days where you didn’t evaporate into the morning chaos. You were the most real thing I’d ever feel and not a day goes by that I don’t long for this silence to end.

    Yeap, Nederland might be a very small homeland for me, but this is probably the best and the longest Dark Star they've ever played ! Pure magic and I think it's partly due to our relaxed attitude on pot. Saw them at De Melkweg in Amsterdam in october 1980 and that gig was even smoother ! And they keep truckin' on.
