Best explanation of rowing I've ever heard.
Jeeze I miss rowing! Though I still keep at the gym 3 years after my last time being in crew, I'd much rather take on a marathon than an erg. Damn things were torture.
As someone who has done both rowing and middle-distance running, I can officially be classed as insane. There is nothing harder on this earth than those two sports where your body can't stay in one metabolic system, where everything tells you to stop. Sure, its only a 6-7 minute race, but its like standing in fire for 7 minutes! But for some reason, us rowers can't get enough of the pain, and the feeling of finishing a race or work piece is like ecstasy. I crave that feeling, and crave rowing!
0:53 damn thats a good split
***** woa.. yeah. 1:40 at 20 spm! 3150 meters in and 10:54 on the clock. ...probably a light warmup pace for this guy.
Andrej Djurasic 1:43.8 for a 30' rate 20 is actually not that fast. Most college rowers are expected to be around 1:42 or below for a 30'@20
peter stone What colleges are you talking about? The British national team 30' test goal is a 1:40 split, I don't know of many college rowers in general, let alone entire programs, that can put up that split.
Everyday during training i want to quit, but everyday i keep coming back for more
THIS VIDEO IS SO GOOD AND TRUE
i love this video....! :)
@tedzelley a split is the time it takes them to go 500m. a 2k is obviously 2 kilometres on the erg and whether it is hard depends on whether you are trying to go fast. It is also the length of regattas (races)
the amount of times ive watched this video before my test pieces..
so true!!!
thee shell,,,,,,,,we love it, and named it "thePainBank"!! And it pays us back on race day, with interest,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
I love elk lake. i had a regatta there in the fall
Rowing's not a sport its a way of life.
I wish one day i'll have half the strength of these guys...
@rocktheglooves so true. so true.
@JernauGurgeh1 @thecaptainbailey Jernau is right. I got to meet Malcolm Howard at HotC in 2008 briefly at a restaurant. We (as junior rowers at the time) were in awe of him. His 6km pb was around 1:35 then, so yes, they can go a bit faster than that. Maybe doing like three pieces?
@absegamifrosh8
He was on a dynamic erg. Your stroke rate on that is like it is on a boat, so it will have been a lot faster than it would have been on a normal erg. Its also Eric Murray.
@Antasion That was the British record at altitude.
Like David Calder once told me: Embrace the pain.
@skierman91 I see, so you can specialize in a particular distance. It would be nice if they did that with rowing. I am sure some guys at even the club I am in would be better at shorter or longer distance races the standard 2 kilometer one.
@danielphilipcater Your point is a good one. I love both sports and even row on my university's club team, so to pick between the two would be like comparing apples and oranges.
@crewchamp13 If you pull it higher you get a longer stroke and so a faster time on the erg, try it.
@thecaptainbailey
he's also slowly dropping his split the whole time.. Average is 1:43.8, but current at the 3150 mark is 1:40...
@mogilska1 you sir, are a genious.
@drewskimorley I did row at school and i agree it is an awesome experience but you have to agree it is a pretty flawed method of transportation.
Brian Price came to my school today.
lololol. :D
@saltyfamily everett rowing. north of seattle
Is there more footage of this crew by any chance?
I have a question I'm a j15 and I pull a 7:20 2k however I'm not in great boat any tips
@sugga57 r u talkin about an erg test? i agree in every word u said... theres nothing that hurts like a 6k test.. i've done pretty much things that hurt a lot but a 6k test is THE thing i hate most.
@XOhadley Second hardest endurance sport in the word.
Damn, THAT'S quick. I doubt I could even go under 1:55 for my 6K, even though a power calculator says I could do it at 1:53.8.
Good luck man, those 2K's are hard. I'm a 178 junior in highschool, 2nd year rowing, 2k pr 7:09.3. Hoping to get down to 6:45 for the crash b's
pain is good!!! I think so......I don't know anymore, I got kinda lost during the years :D
@TheManiacChicken Pinsent pulled 9009 for 30 mins at rate 20 and that's the world record apparently.
@skierman91 Cross country skiing, it is bloody heard so I hear.
@jm338 i kno exactly how u feel. i too hav no idea why i love rowing so much but i'm completely addicted
up the rowers!!
you lucky git, i hope one day to be able to content against monsters such as these men..
@XOhadley i agree with that, cause im a rower, but it really isnt a sport it's an event.
BEN RUTLEDGE IS MY COACH!!!!!!!
@thecaptainbailey I'll be honest with you, yes they're tank but that was probably an hour or more on the erg. I'm not a fantastic rower, top club level/U23 and I can do do a 1:42 ish for my 30@20 test. I would expect these guys to be doing 1:40 or less for 30 minutes at rate 20.
@rocktheglooves Hahahaha! If we are talking about Men's Eights then yes! But look at the canadian Mens four!
at 16, it is a bad time
Such a good vid :) does anyone know what the song is at 0:28?
@Sn0000pdogg lol i got that shirt at narf with the blue oar hahah
@XOhadley there isn't a lot that bugs me.. but what makes me lose it is when people claim rowing isn't a sport... I couldn't agree with you more. everyone else just plays GAMES!
Any average joe can start a 2k out going hard, its the real rowers who are made when you hit the 750 mark and its time to shift up the rate and ignore the lactic acid in all of your muscles, and its the great rowers who are made when they can take that, then shift up once more with 250 to go.
@skierman91 How far do you skiers race competitively?
@mayandour maybe 141 watts.....
@absegamifrosh8 you mean eric murray?
@sugga57 what did you hold
Very few things are more difficult physically and mentally than a 2k
@redskater42 you mean it's the only men's eight WITH the crazy lie back...
@themacattack671 GW? Me and my eight have a regatta coming up in two weeks against people we have destroyed before, if we win then we will represent Great Britain in the Junior Olympics.
What name is the music? I' d Like to use it in an erg video.. Thanks in advance.
tino?
Well my first day of Novice crew (I've never rowed before) is tomorrow, my coach linked me to this page, and ya, I'm fairly intimidated now.
@mayandour I don't like to hate, but I couldn't help but notice that your only subscription is JustinBieberVEVO. :P Top olympic rowers pull sub-1:40 for 30' rate 20 (over 9k), and open 60' (over 18k); 1:41 for 18k (just over 60') rate 20? I assume you're joking.
Probably because technique isn't as much of a factor on the Erg as it would be on the water.
7:09 at 16 is kinda bad
Im a college freshman novice 6:27 at 177lbs. dont even tell me im not going fast enough.
@fallenpumpkinhead works for me!
Hi
@redskater42 although, they are kinda fast... :S But they can be better :) maybe one day they will kick butt...
what are the songs in this video?
6:57 at 13. Holy shit. I'm 16 and a do a 7:09. And that's not necessarily a bad time, either.
the eight is the only candian crew with out the crazy lie back
I wish I could throw my coxswain that far
To anyone that says crew isn't a sport...
Honestly, you try and erg multiple 2k pieces with a coxswain or coach screaming in your ear, "GO NEGATIVE!"
My coach calls it a gentleman's sport...
I´m a gentleman and a rower...what´s the problem with it???
@mayandour honestly mate, I'd be more likely to believe you if you told me you ran 100m in under 9.5 seconds.
@theotherspice I don`t think anyone would be "gentleman" if his whole body is burning and he still have to go on.
So you're trying to say that you can travel over 60 km/h in one of these boats? Yeah, okay. I believe you.
@mogilska1 that is not true
and i can know i becouse i rowing veri much
i love how hard rowers have to work to go at 10 miles an hour
@mayandour aaaaaahahahahahahahahaaa....
@jengrey really not that difficult my friend, i've seen first year under 15s do that
6:44 is sick if your a 150lbs novice
Rowing = awesome.
Pain + suffering = not awesome
@Sn0000pdogg Professional cyclists are the best athletes around. Hands down.
@mayandour Seeing as you're hiding behind a name on the internet, I dont find you amazing either.
Too bad us Brits will ruin the party ;)
@mayandour maybe 141 watts.....
At age 19 our training was 10 times a week. It was awsome. I did a 5k in 17:23. So sad that I didn't went on with it. Rowing is so great. There is notning in the world like this. It almost feels like the boat hover above the water. One summer we went arround the island. 60-70k pr day for 6 days. For a week we did nothing but eat, sleep and rowing. I will never forget it. I was some of the best thing I have ever done i my life.
