  • Each student in Notre Dame of Maryland University’s 2nd Degree Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing (ABSN) program has a different answer to the question, “why become a nurse?” Students come from diverse backgrounds and take different pathways to the ABSN program. ABSN student Sema Er shares what led her to nursing and why she chose NDMU.
When Sema’s mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, she was surrounded by health care workers who had a significant impact on her life.
“We stayed at the hospital and around my mom, and she needed intensive care. At that time, the hospital nurses and doctors became your family,” Sema says.
The care the nurses provided Sema’s mother and family led her to consider a future career as a nurse.
“Their hard work just inspired me,” she says. “Maybe that is why I want to help people now.”
Because Sema is of Turkish nationality, finding the right nursing program for her proved challenging. She explains, “Not every college accepts internationals. That’s what I like about Notre Dame of Maryland University.”
However, Sema is a good fit for the ABSN program because of her drive for success and commitment.
“I am the first female in my family that went to college,” she says. “I was a survivor, and I’m determined.”
She says this motivation is fueled by a desire to fight for other women who want to break free and pursue their passions.
“I am here now, not just for myself, but for others, especially for females. I can be a good example for them … I struggled but made it,” she says.
