  • cheersdicknewick.com/ Thank you Halsted Morris, the son of the manager of Project Cheers in 1968, for providing this film, and others, from his father's collection. There is so little online about this year of the Observer Singlehanded Trans Atlantic Race or OSTAR. We are so happy to be able to share this great bit of sailing history with all interested. I apologize for the rather poor quality of this upload. It was already a big file and a long film and some quality has been lost in the course of uploading it here.

Tom Follett was my uncle and I currently have the trophy that he won in this race on my mantle.

I remember it well. Went to view the boats in Millay docks, and out for the start.
Some excellent boats, some totally wacky / dangerous…we thought so. Glad they all got safely back on land.
Don’t think I have seen all this footage before, very interesting. It does need someone to give a going over with a decent computer programme to clean it up.

Kudos to all the brave cameramen that endured the hardships of the sea right along side each skipper. Outstanding footage! 😆

I was 14 and getting good enough to start winning local regattas as a teenager . But Mum said there is no money in sailing so get a proper job ! Now 67 and did cruise 75% of the world on catamarans.
Thanks for the vid . I was all part of my inspiration to do up houses .zzzzzzzzzz

Stumbled across this video, knowing the race took place 50 years ago and wanting to find out exactly when it all happened (I was 3 years old at the time). And my father is in this video for about 5 seconds - so thank you for uploading this film!I have now dug out and read his log books from the trip - he made 3 attempts and the race was won while his boat was still under repair! But good on him for even attempting the crossing in a home-made boat. He was a braver man than I will ever be!

Just watching through the music was an ordeal to compare with the endurance of the subject matter.
I was 9 when this took place but I do remember the trans Atlantic races that came after.

So strange, to know the GPS system was discovered about TWENTY YEARS later. These skippers did need the GPS already. Why did scientists look for those satellites that late? Must have been there in '68, simply never seen them?!

Would I be able to download this video to share on the OSTAR Facebook page? Great to see this and there will be a lot of interest in seeing footage of this 1968 race.

Tom Follett had a camera with him and did film parts of his voyage. Not sure what happened to most of the footage.
