2100 had really put on a show, even when way outside of its home territory.
And it’ll put even more of a show on when it’s done being restored!
Expect they done a shitty job at the oil convention.
@@Train_Tok_Man its being converted back to coal
@@tonierbuckle0202 I know, and thank goodness.
@@tonierbuckle0202Not anymore, they will coverted to oil again but this time would be fine
My father worked for the Reading Railroad for 32 years. As a kid I probably hopped a lot of freight trains that she was hauling, and my father probably worked on her many times.
Look at how they massacured my boy with ditchlights and that stupid pointless light below the headlight!
I don't understand why they had to bring a locomotive all the way from out east to the Pacific Northwest and completely fuck her up especially fuel wise since it was meant to burn anthracite coal not oil which damaged the firebox.
Fun fact, those bilevels are former CNW. You can tell by the gong bell on the cab car and the paint scheme the red stripes along the length of the cars (formerly orange and brown) from when they were owned by RTA (which formed and later became Metra), which took over commuter service from the CNW. The F40 is former Amtrak f40PHR 319 which was built using some parts from sdp40f. she was eventually sold by FLNX and returned to service in Canada on Agence métropolitaine de transport (renumbered back to 319) and later in New York on the Saratoga and North Creek. After 2017, she wound up at Larry’s truck and electric. Her current status is unknown.

Can they change it back to coal burning?
@@JoyceLund I believe they did

@@jakeford12 Whistle sounded bad because pressure couldn’t be kept up well enough
@@JoyceLund That’s the ultimate goal, yes. I believe if the coal conversion isn’t already done, it will be soon.
I saw 2100 in St. Thomas, Ontario when I was 3 years old back in 2004. I am nearly 17 years old and I am now a volunteer at that museum and a lot of volunteers would tell me that Thomas Payne made the bearings too tight on the drive wheels and didn't provide good enough horsepower to the locomotive. One volunteer told me Thomas Payne died in 2017. I am glad it's in better hands in Cleveland. I am planning to go see it next year and if it's running I might be able to drive it maybe who knows? Anyway I am glad it's in better hands now.
The Whistle sounds like a dying Cow lol
beautiful
You can almost hear 2100 struggle for breath thanks to that abomination of an oil conversion that she was just not designed to take with that huge firebox meant for anthracite coal... And that whistle is just sad. No wonder she needed a diesel to help her pull 3 passenger cars.
The 2102 fared better than this one in fact watch videos of her pulling fan trips during the 1970s-80s era post rambles.
was a shame, 35 years ago when 2101 burned up.
i went to the roundhouse and saw it in its burned status.
really didnt look that bad though.
By the sound of that whistle, she sounds like she's pretty worn out
I like the looks of the locomotive just beautiful
I regret of putting this comment because when I learned that during this time it had horrible career and it does not look good to me anymore
that pos whistle and the ditch lights make the 2100 seem oddly British...
Get a whistle for 2100. Sounds like a sick duck!
It's tragic what they've done to this gorgeous Lady! Isn't it bad enough to put circus paint on her and remove her ashpans but to steal her voice and put that awful sounding whistle is just criminal behavior! Thank God she's back in Reading where she belongs.
This whistle sounds like Western Maryland 734 whistle it wore back in the early 1990's.
Yep good ole Hancock 3 chime

2100 is sitting in Richland in an industrial park. It has been somewhat vandalized and some parts are missing.(don't know if they were stolen or removed for safekeeping). The birds love the inside of the cab........Yeeeccchhhh! It may be due for it's 1472 day teardown & overhaul and that may be why it isn't running, I just don't know any more than that.
I wish it could be brought back east and teamed up what 2124 or 2102. All it takes is millions of dollars. I'd even heard an ugly rumor the owners were considering scrapping it.Can anyone tell me what's written on the side of the tender? I can't read it. I know it's not Reading!
Tailterrier27 Thank you so much for that bit of wonderful news! Can you verify that? I'd like to know more about the project. If it happens, it sounds as if this locomotive has gotten the right owners. Next we need to team it up with one of its surviving sisters for a double header! :)
It was POSITIVELY CRIMINAL what that did to this poor, beautiful locomotive! This is so hard to watch 😢
0:29 that whsitle sure sounds awful and I heard it that was caused becuase of 2100 after it was converted to burn oil which is awful since I learned form a CZcamsr that the class 2100 is based off of the reading t1s that theses locomotives were actually never ever ment to burn oil plus I think the extra headlights on her look hitious on her and don't look good on her and in my opinion it only looks good on either a anadian Pacifc example 2816 or Canadian National locomotives example 2141. The red does look good on her but I'm actually starting to hate and i think her reading livery is 10 times better and it sure is great that once she's steaming again probably sometime in 2020 she'll be back as a coal burner and back in her old reading livery
I actually like the whistle and I don’t think that it being converted to an oil burner changed the whistle or made the engine operate differently that’s a wm 3 chime that’s how they’re supposed to sound
The firebox it had couldn’t burn oil, in the video the diesel is actually doing all the work
@@Luketrop well that's a shame
I love the way 2100 looks in this. It is all about retirement here from what I see. While restricted, 2100 already did excursion service for many years. I honestly think that if she was able to steam properly and actually got modified to work with oil, she would be perfect! We already have a working T-1 in original condition, why not have something unique like FerroEquus!

Very nice video! Hopefully the T-Hog finds a new home and will find a new future.Ashame the Golden Pacific operations was so short lived.
The only time that the 2100 even sounds close to a Reading T-1 in this vid is from 13:25-13:46, suck that its been through so much since it was sold by the Reading, almost nothing on the engine is original, even the tender is from the 2101, sad to see it now but hey at least she is still around.
I hope those three double decker cars isn't stressing it too much.
With what these guys did to 2100 I am surprised it could even pull its own weight
Nice video! People still talk smack about this operation, but I rode it once and enjoyed the heck out of the ride, would have gone again thta season but they called it quits early. Say it was a bad business decision and I'll agree with you, but don't say they didn't do what they could to make it a neat ride.
Idk why. But I actually kind of like the ditch lights, the extra headlight, and her being oil fired. Besides it wasn't Thomas Payne's fault (The guy who converted it to oil firing). Canada's railroad regulations stated that all mainline operated steam locomotives are required to be fired with recycled oil and have an extra headlight and added ditch lights.
The whistle sounds like western Maryland 734s 1990s hooter whistle
Hooter whistle? I think you need to take whistle school again. That is not a hooter!

To Hyena Morgan, 2100 didn't seem to be that high that clearances would be a problem. Just "who" are the current owners of 2100? I can certainly understand being in a hurry if they're under the gun to get it restored and make some money with it. Damn, it's always money isn't it? Must be what's wrong with America, no one can ever do something just because it's the right thing to do, it's always gotta be "MAKE MORE MONEY".
Maynard Ross Sr. 2100 is getting restored in Cleveland, Ohio
Maynard Ross Sr. Well on the clearance issues, thatsteamguy on facebook " which helped with the move and helping with the restore" Said that because of how high the 2100 sat on the trailer, it had to take a slower route home... The owner is a Tom Payne, he is restoring Coast guard ships that cost atleast 3 times the amount of the 2100. i don't know him, and all you hear online about him and this train is stories, I did have a few conversations with his helpers, and i do know for a fact he does still own it.. and he really made a lot of people upset with his conversion and runing away with it too the west coast " but it is his train" good too see it mite have another life burning coal. Well just from some steam people, it will cost 1 million to fix..a million to run. a big chunk just to get her home..So she has to make something, or it will never run again. not many have 3 millionish just to toss away to keep steam alive " wish it was free thou" But i do have to say, the 2100 is being saved by people that seem to care more about the Locomotive, than just making cash from it. a lot many donations from rail fans helped this move happen and even the chance of running again.
Its so sad seeing what that idiot did to that historic engine. Just disgusting.
Poor 2100. I'm glad it's in better hands now and will be properly restored. Hopefully it finds a good life back here in the Northeast where it belongs.
Still pretty cool how it made it to the west coast, though! =D Would be cool if SP 4449 made it back east again along with UP 3985!
Why would convert a T-1 to burn oil? It would sound horrible!
@kd7tqn but i like it, reminds me of a whistle used at one point on WMSR 734 a number of years back
The T-1 can't possibly be operating under it's 240 lbs. of steam pressure. The whistle sounds too weak. 2102 had a steamboat whistle on her for much of the 1970's and her's sounded much better. In fact when 2100 ran on the Winchester & Western AND on the Ohio Central her steamboat whistle then sounded very nice. It came off an N&W J.
What a way to ruin a locomotive.
She's being restored in Cleveland now
On the side of the tender it reads: FERROEQUIS. Must be the name of the Mexican railway that once owned it.
Ferroequus is Latin for iron horse. How dare you say this thing was owned by a Mexican railroad!

This whistle is kick ass
Hell yeah
I wish so much that a T1 could be restored to burn oil, one that could run for awhile and that didn't have low ridership like this one. That would show people that it wouldn't matter what kind of firebox it had, Wooten, Belpaire, or normal old Radial Stay, all engines, with enough effort put in, can run on oil just fine. The oil burner was of Canadian Pacific design, and judging by just looking at the smoke, it really doesn't seem to be firing that bad. For goodness sakes go look at the Union Pacific 3985 back in '08 when she had that Lempor exhaust. It was horrid. For those saying that the T1 was never designed to burn oil, neither was a Big Boy, and everyone said it wouldn't work because the 4005 conversion in the '50s was "unsuccessful," and look at what happened there. 4014 runs on oil just as good, if not better, than she ran on coal, and you cannot tell me that they haven't been working her.
This is a much different animal from a Big Boy. Wooten firebox makes a difference because the conversion was done improperly, and didn’t heat the firebox evenly and well enough to maintain pressure
@@blackbirdgaming8147 I know, I was explaining how people have said in the past that neither a Big Boy or T1 could be converted to oil successfully. I would like for a T1 to be successfully converted to prove that it can be done
@@NEAFarmKid4010 I feel like if the conversion was done correctly, it would've actually been successful.
@@MilwaukeeRoadJames I don't know what practices, techniques or designs they used for this oil conversion. A T1 could be converted to oil correctly, I have no doubt. The 2100 never got to run enough to show whether this conversion was successful or not, so I'm not going to say anything about that. It was the railroad that shut the excursions down, not the 2100.
They done a shitty job at the oil convention. The Wootten Firebox was meant for Anthracite Coal and Anthracite Coal only.
Plus, I’m pretty sure a T1 isn’t meant to have really loud stack talk while pulling a diesel locomotive and three passenger cars. This is one out of a few cases that an oil conversion doesn’t always work.
Saying a T1 should be converted to oil is like shooting a gun with safety on, you won’t be doing much with it.
I love that sound of music at the conclusion of the video. Who is it music by?
When was this video taken? Where is that locomotive now? Is it still running?
I'd still like to see the video taken by the GPRR staff of the runs

Hey Tailterrier27 and g bridgman, you say it's already in Montana? Boy, the new owners must not only be serious but in a hurry to get it running again. Hopefully someone will record her rebuild and first trips wherever they may go. Another steam locomotive saved, Thank God!!!
Maynard Ross Sr. They are in a serious hurry, but due to the fact that it is on a flatcar, it has to wait for lines to open up that do not have any low bridges and such " height restrictions" , due to the 2100 being so high in the air.. And they are not the owners of the 2100," yet" she is on a 10 year lease. So i'm sure they are in a big hurry with only 10 years to make some cash or she goes back to the old owner again.
@@hyenamorgan3705 The American Steam group in Ohio own it now. The old owner passed away at his home in Tacoma, Washington in October 2017.

For g bridgman, I too wish it could be restored and run again. It was after all one of the engines restored to pull the American Freedom Train back in 74. 4449 is just down the river a few hundred miles in Portland, Ore. and that was why it was originally restored. It's always money, money, money. Mostly, the lack of. Keep hoping.

I believe it is her reading 6 chime. Running on such low boiler pressure (150 PSI) and being run on oil made it sound that way
Its a hancock 3 chime
IC 3 chime
I may sound like noob, but what is the story behind all the hate towards this engine's operations at this time? I like to know the exact story.
The #2100 and the other RDG T-1's were meant to burn anthracite coal. The 2100 was converted to burn oil at this period in time, thus dramatically reducing her performance. Her boiler pressure dropped and in case she stalled, a diesel had to be on every trip. And converting the engine to oil just kills its heritage.
+mark10788 oh I see now, Good to know that she's in better hands now.
Approach Medium Productions The thing is, unlike a firebox meant for regular coal, a firebox meant for anthracite is very wide. This increase in size means converting it to oil would be difficult to do well and efficiently. Couple that with allegedly the wrong type of oil burning equipment and you get very poor steam generation. I'd be suprised if 2100 ever did more than 1/3 of the work on these trips.
And even more hate is directed towards the aftermarket addons they put on her. Though I kinda like some of them, most rail fans think they were ugly.
Luckily, -no one was hurt- 2100 is being restored back to operation, but properly this time, and she'll burn anthracite again.
No-one is hating the locomotive, just the injustice that was done to the locomotive. From what I have heard, they basically took the same burner that would be in your home oil burner and fudged it into the firebox.
Rail Racer that whistle sounds horrid.
That poor engine.

This might have been a nice video, were it not for that gd F-40 screaming through every scene. Jesus -- somebody scrap that thing! A find a better whistle for the 2100.

Why? they don't even use their own T1 2102.
The locomotive dosen't need the ditch lights, she was built in 45 , not 50 .
Len.
I'm sorry, but this is just wrong. 2100 needs to be in Reading Co. paint and burning anthracite coal. We need a petition to buy it back from the bonehead who currently owns it.
When was this?
why doesn't the main light work or is it off for a reason
7 Years late but
The small and old dynamo wasnt strong enough to power all lights, the radio and the early PTC system and the main headlight at the same time
Even after converted to LED,hence another example 308,has been switched to battery rather than a dynamo.
Why Payne didn't buy a new dynamo is unknown, but probably wasn't thought of.
@andrewbnsf
this was in 2006
Jeez that is one anemic sounding whistle.
Can anyone tell me what aspects of the T-1 series made her a poor oil burner?
The Reading was an anthracite road, therefore all its engines burned the stuff. To burn anthracite coal, an engine needs to be fitted with a Wootten firebox. Not only was this type of firebox designed to burn strictly anthracite, but the oil conversion Thomas Payne did was half-assed, to say the least. It was done with a few pieces of sheet metal, nothing more. One over the fire grates, another over the firebox door (which from what I’ve heard, occasionally glowed due to the heat) and another two on the top and bottom of the coal bunker. All of this led to 2100 steaming poorly and this made the whistle sound absolutely awful.
@PRL2204
A pice of crap that the owner thought was just "amazing" and "beautiful"
Why is the tender smoking?
If i am mistaken, but shouldnt the dynamo be on the locomotive itself at all times?
Get this a new whistle. Sounds like a duck:)
Why would 2100 be over across the country from her usual home? 2,000 miles?!
That's 2100, and she was supposed to be in Canada, however they compromised with Tacoma
@@MilwaukeeRoadJames Excuse me I got things mixed up..🤣🤣
Is it okay if I can post a clip of your video on TikTok? I’ll give you credit.
If her firebox was modified to work with oil, I would love to see her run like this again. We already have a T-1 in original condition and working order so why not have something unique for a change? If all of the kinks like the tight bearings and again, the firebox were fixed, this locomotive wouldn't be so bad!
I am sick of people always going for Thomas Payne's throat for doing what he did. Yes, it ruined its heritage, but it didn't ruin who she was.
I knew Tom Payne and visited him many times at his home and he didn't install the oil conversion some Canadian company did one of the main reasons why 2100 had to stop was the oil burner over heated the bottom of the front side of the firebox and his biggest investor Charles allard stopped funding the gprr

Wow, what a sad locomotive. Whoever added the ditch lights and that awful paint scheme and had it burn oil, I'd punch them in the face if I met them in real life. They ruined the heritage of the engine. It looks like a diesel from the distance. Also, the Reading T1's were never designed to burn oil, so that really reduced 2100's performance. The diesel was there to pull the train if 2100 stalled. That engine is crying for help. Glad it's in better hands now,
If only the conversion was done by people who knew how to do it, because it was done incorrectly so the engines performance suffered as a result, at lest its getting converted back so it would suffer performance wise anymore.
