  • Today, I visit the laboratory of Oxford University to meet with Adam Isherwood in order to undertake x2 tests to establish my VO2 Max, Aerobic Threshold and Anaerobic Threshold / Lactate Threshold (aka VT2).
We start with a VO2 Max Ramp Test, which produces plenty of data enabling Adam to explains what is going on inside our bodies as we work at an endurance pace and how our body reacts to rising exercise intensity, including the significance of breaking through our Anaerobic Threshold aka VT2 (the Threshold we are seeking to identify in our FTP Tests). This is the inflexion point where the body is no longer able to produce energy from only aerobic sources, and has to then also use the anaerobic system. Using my data, we also see what happens as the intensity continues to rise, until my VO2 Max is achieved (the maximum amount of oxygen I am able to breath in during exercise).
Having estimated my Anaerobic Threshold, we move on to a 30min test riding just below, at and just above this threshold, in order to take blood lactate readings and obtain an accurate understanding of my VT2 / Anaerobic Threshold. And Adam is then able to demonstrate with a full suite of data the need to be mindful of why it is important to have an accurate understanding of our anaerobic threshold in order to ensure that when we are training or riding outside, we are conscious as to when we are working aerobically vs when we are also using our anaerobic engine. The point being that when we are working at our Anaerobic Threshold, this means that we are working at our maximum aerobic capacity, without dipping into our anaerobic resources.
    the physiological differences
Also as I describe at the start of the video, this will help me set my training and riding zones for the Majorca 312, following the very kind invitation to take part in this beautiful event from Morray aka Muz, founder of All Things Ride. Muz is making available the tickets including half board accommodation arriving on Wed 27th April and taking part in the event on Saturday 30th April, leaving Sunday 1st May for £550. Just say you are a friend of Bike Racing Without Mercy - link below:

My mother was a 100m record holder in my country and i always had a strong sprint ability. Always felt the short ftp tests gave me zones that was way too hard. Then decided to buy a lactate device. That was a eyeopener. My ftp was around 315 ramp test but my MLSS was 270. Guess i was just very good at this short tests. I did horrible training for years so this is a important subject

The typical lactate step test content out there covers the first test only. The 2nd carve where you flushed out steady state is excellent, appreciate sharing this method of refinement.

Very good video. Data will help you with the longer rodes like the 312. Probably the best channels providing real insights into becoming a better cyclist. Thanks for all the work required to produce the videos.

After watching several of your videos Phil, decided to subscribe. You put a ton of work into this channel and I love the fact that you reply to every single comment. it's quite extraordinary really! I've been riding seriously for about 1.5 years and I am entirely hooked. Riding my first Grand Fond in the Badlands in Alberta in June and I'm stoked. Keep diversifying the content and please keep em' coming. Thanks!

I love this kind of content Phill, I rewatch your video with Piglet and Dr Dave on occasion to remind myself of the physiological principles covered and better understand training, and I think this will join that as where education meets entertainment! Not easy to make a clear well communicated video on this stuff, really great.
