  • Join me once again in Texas with Jeff from Muddy Feet concrete pumping as we boom pump 180 yards for a crew of 6 guys. These guys are good, I have to admit. This was a post tension single family house slab and it went as smooth as could be, no pun intended. Enjoy.

The heat is the biggest issue I have with TX. Otherwise it looks like a great place to work and live. What did you end up thinking of Buccees? Not bad for a gas station...Has some similarities to KwikTrip here in WI I thought.

Born and raised in South Texas. The heat is on most of the year, and you can say goodbye to any dreams of a white Christmas, as well as any sidebiz in snowplowing. Overall though, I think we do pretty well as far as "good places to live" go.

A friend of mine got crushed by a boom off one of those pampers. It collapsed while he was standing under it running the hose and drove him into the ground. Broke his hip, leg, shoulder and some other bones to, so many I can't remember all of them. Surprisingly he recovered and he can walk but his concrete pouring days are over with.
Be very careful around those. I'd be wearing a brain bucket if I was you. All it takes is for those pump company's to neglect maintenance and anything can happen. Plus, think about how much weight and tension that boom is carrying. Nothing to mess around with. We used them on every pour doing flatware jobs for warehouses. We did one for GM that was 1,000,000 Sq feet. We poured 70,000 Sq ft a night on that one. We did the same for Walmart.

What's the purpose of the trenches in a slab pour like that? They form something of a honeycomb of 48" deep concrete walls buried in the dirt. But why?

I think it's probably the type of soil they have around here. All slabs are done like that in Texas, or at least all of them that I have seen. It's completely different in Wisconsin and other places.

Civil engineer here that has tested/inspected concrete, soil, and rebar on-sites for a couple years. As ^^^ has already said, it’s due to the soil. Soil in most of Texas has a high clay content which leads to the soil swelling and shrinking with varying moisture contents as it rains/dries. This can cause extensive cracking due to settlement issues and can lead to poor structural support for load bearing walls. This is also why they don’t do basements in Texas either, the basement walls and bottom slab are more prone to failing. These trenches are likely where the load bearing walls are going to be built upon to support the structural loads. They also will just help resist the differential settlement.

@@jarretrausch Ah. Expansive soils. We have similar problems here in Colorado, but plenty of basements. I can certainly see how that would strengthen a slab, though.

@@Jim-nq9el That’s interesting. The extreme hot and dry climate of Texas and less vegetation along with the clay may make both the swelling during storms and the cracking after it dries worse.
