- In Beijing, wages are low and but rents have skyrocketed. Many Beijingers have few options left. And thus a strange underworld was born: long corridoors leading to tiny underground rooms, in basements originally designed as bomb shelters. They house a city within a city. And within this city, a tribe of people are forced to live like rats.

Respect to this guy 3 hours sleep and rest working, day in and day out, its a miracle he found his old room. Its getting you to feel like a zombie and its so depressing. When we complain about the hardships of our life, know there is always someone else who has it harder then you.
I worked in china for about 1 year , travelled around to few cities with work, lived in chengdu in a very Chinese neighbourhood, in a 2 large bedroom, dinning room, sitting room, kitchen, bathroom 2 balconies for €160 monthly, I guess I was lucky, but some Chinese people live in the most appalling conditions I’ve ever seen, really sad, very poor people but very welcoming and very friendly, live in Ireland now, really miss china and the people, would love to go back someday 🙏🏻🇵🇹

I have lived in other parts of Guangdong china. The situation wasn't the same i think the housing crisis is mainly in the big cities.. it's sad to see this people live under such hostile conditions sending love for Nairobi Kenya ❤
What's wrong with living in the basement when you can't afford a better place. It's way better than living in a car or a tents on the streets.
Excellent video. That last furniture store guy in the video is quite intelligent. He knows what's up. He knows what's happening. He has a good sense of humor and remains upbeat. Good.
Thanks for posting.
The video was shot many years ago. Beijing has already undergone earth-shaking changes, but the homeless in the United States do not even have this kind of underground life, which is so sad.
Meanwhile a storage unit where I live is $400 a month.
Not sure what is worse: a shit apartment for $1200 a month or this.
Seriously I'm in the US in "Silicon Valley" and I don't know how much a storage unit is, but right now I live in my work place which is fine, but if I lose that for some reason, my plan is to put things into a storage and then to find places to sleep where I can't be detected. Or rent a small office and sleep in there. There are a lot of poor people here in "Silicon Valley" the US is not a rich country, it's a poor country with some rich people in it.
Then move on ... Good luck 🤞
Its like living in a cell .what a shame for these people
The disdain of urbanites against country folks is universal in human beings, it seems.
Absolutely. Everywhere, especially developing countries.
Great work 👏 thank you 🎉
At the 17:00 the location/complex is near the 3rd ring road called Pinguo Bei Shu. It was built and opened about 2008. My best friend moved in the first year it was opened, and I moved to that complex a few years later (the laughing men statues are famous). Rents were around 13,000 rmb for a furnished 2 bed then. I rented studios for about 10,000. I left in 2018, and had moved from there when rents got over 15,000 and up for a studio. Plus most landlords in Beijing want a month's deposit and the first quarterly rent, so 4 months rent to move in. Back then that was 60,000 to move in. I moved to a less expensive apartment about 10 minutes from here, and there were people living in spaces in the underground parking. We were told the security guards rented them out to people from the country.
First and I love it. Merci ARTE
Understandably rentals are expensive but they can freely work in other cities where rentals are manageable.
The fist woman's English is quite impressive assuming she never went to a language school or lived abroad. Naturally not perfect but she can articulate her thoughts in English pretty good. I mean, I've been very casually studying Chinese for a while and still nowhere near from any level of proficiency. 但总有一天我会说一口流利的中文!! Excellent documentary btw.
Ya, I find it strange that someone whose English is so good can’t seem to find a much better paying job ….. Very strange indeed.

@indiancretinvirusesterrori3918 I thought this looked a few years old. But can all people afford the high tech live? Foreigner usually make good money. How do people live that have low paying service jobs? Like all the moped delivery drivers for example?
Oh, they will have gotten better. China is on a program to help poverty-stricken people like this, they're putting people in new houses and apartments, it's really nice to see.
This is global norm these days in all big cities. Properties are heavily speculated and massive rent eating into large portion of wages. People get priced out. Forcing young wage workers and non homeowners to live in very shoddy conditions.

When my family lived in China, my grandma had rented a bed in a large complex. We had to share bathroom and kitchen with other neighbors. Later we were able to rent a room, but it was also shared with other people.

In fact, since May 2011, Beijing has continued to carry out special rectification of underground space, eradicating a large number of safety hazards, and realizing the safety of underground space without accidents.
This video is from Beijing more than a decade ago. In 2017, in order to facilitate the people, the basement of Beijing has been magnificently "turned around". Now Beijing is developing very well, and people's living standards have improved significantly.
At they are paying rent unlike some so called developed world living off of social allowance without working.

This is all a long time ago in Beijing, in fact, since May 2011, Beijing has continued to carry out special renovation of underground space, and in 2017, it was included in the city's "dredging and renovation to promote the promotion" special action. By 2021, through the joint efforts of all districts and departments, a total of 9,118 underground Spaces of 7.85 million square meters have been cleaned up and remediated, and 1,501 underground Spaces have been restored, eradicating a large number of safety hazards and realizing the safety of underground Spaces without accidents.
Frequent incidents of gun violence, in which many people have lost their lives, have sparked debate over gun control.

In fact, no matter how large a country is or how formal a city is, there will still be such illegal zones. The New York subway does not allow people to live, but there are still people living there.
Very interesting - why only release this video now when it was shot in 2017? Five years is a long time especially in big cities of China.
Easy to understand why...we know the MSM love everything negative about China even from the past if they can find one, my Taiwanese friend travels throughout China in the past many years and I trust her when she tells me about China present days.
This is Beijing many years ago, and now Beijing has undergone tremendous changes. In recent years, Beijing has achieved significant results in environmental governance of urban villages. Through a series of policies and measures, the environment of urban villages has been effectively improved, providing residents with a more livable living environment.
Danish photographer Joakim Eskildsen visited five states in the United States during the seven months of 2016, documenting the current living conditions of the lower class in American society and restoring the most authentic representation of American society. The lives of the characters in the photos are in stark contrast to the American Dream depicted on television, and their bitterness is rarely known. The United States, which is well-known in film and television works, is always glamorous. The bustling Times Square in New York is filled with Wall Street filled with successful individuals dressed in clothing and shoes.
Wow!! Very safe place and clean. Every one will hide underground if there is a war.
What about places like Manhattan, Kensington, Phoenix Avenue?

The thing is, if the basements are kept clean, watertight and insulated, they would be habitable. Many students rooms in university hostels in France aren't much bigger. One basically comes home just to bunk down.
One I had was so small only a bunk bed could be put in cos of the bed was lower, there would be no room to stand. I studied in the library and reading room. Just went back to the hostel to sleep. I still managed to harbour one other person who couldn't find a room at all.

underpopulation

The phenomenon of housing society in the West is far more severe than imagined, but the German and French public television stations have played up Beijing as the background. In the United States, for example, the housing problem in the United States has perpetuated the wealth gap, with wealthy communities building walls around their neighborhoods to keep out not only affordable housing but also multifamily housing, which has created not only pockets of wealth, but also pockets of concentrated poverty.
In Vaasa I stayed in a shared apartment(but I was alone) for just 275€!! comparing to 150€, this is awfull.

Over the years, although the federal and local governments in the United States have declared that they will strictly control the drug problem, they have failed to take substantive measures under the lobbying of various interest groups.
There are also slums in the United States, and many homeless people live without a fixed place.

It seems like the basements were much cleaner when they were occupied.

"Transforming waste into treasure" has achieved results in the renovation of underground spaces in multiple parts of the country With the rapid advancement of urbanization in our country, the development of urban underground space is increasing day by day, showing a trend of diversification, technology, depth, stratification, and comprehensiveness. It also has strong irreversibility and sustainable ecological impact. In order to better achieve the goals of urban underground space development and protect the rights and interests of stakeholders, it is necessary to legalize urban underground space planning. At present, China has preliminarily established a legislative system for urban underground space planning, established legal principles such as ecological and environmental protection, ensured the realization of moderate, harmonious, and sustainable ecological concepts, controlled the occurrence of "urban problems", and promoted the construction and development of ecological cities. This is a great event that benefits the present and benefits the future.
But now the basements in Beijing have been renovated and no one has been living there for a long time.
Great achievements have been made in the management of underground space in Beijing.
Translator takes a lot a liberties. Looses a lot of the character-sometimes essential meanings-of the speakers.
That's 99% of western documentaries interviewing locals. Only translate loose meaning, probably to make it easier for viewers to watch. But sometimes they overwrite entire speech with their own agenda that they are pushing, also losing out lots of subtle cultural nuiances for viewers.
According to statistics, the number of overdose deaths in Golden City, California, surged to 647 in 2022, while the city of San Francisco could surpass that number this year. One San Francisco citizen said that this was once a beautiful city, the condensation of generations of blood, sweat and tears, and all this has gradually collapsed in the last decade. Matt Dorsey, a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, said, "We have unprecedented levels of drug use and drug dealing in the city." Stolcup also said that he often witnessed criminal activity, and even had to fight off the perpetrators, "the streets are full of bodies, feces, needles."

More than 45 million people in the United States live below the poverty line, accounting for nearly one seventh of the total population.
In recent years, the wealth gap in American society has continued to widen, with issues such as company layoffs, corporate bankruptcies, and economic downturn leading to further division of society. Some marginalized groups have gone to extremes due to psychological loss.
It is a pity that the underground life of the homeless in the United States is not the same as the dramatic changes in Beijing.
I don't think these people are the so-called "rat tribe". On the contrary, I am in the same situation as them. We all need to work hard to get the life we want.
There are many people on the streets of the United States who are like walking dead every day, in deep trouble with drug addiction, and the local government in the United States has never taken action!
In the United States, at least 6,300 people are driven out of their places of residence every day for various reasons, and then they will become homeless on the streets, living by begging for food, and the number of homeless people is also increasing year by year.
Hope she is fine

500-600$ per a month , with china's chip prices and she is complaining? In russIa 500-600$ is a dream salary for most places .

150 euros for a "coffin" room..? Plus 28 euros for utilities.. You would be MUCH better off getting a campervan..
These people live in a very simple way, but they also live a strong life and work hard, while the poor in the United States find it difficult to turn over through work.
