I bought the CT-S1000V the week it came out. It is at the right price for my needs. I bought it from Guitar Center and they comped me a nice keyboard stand.
Does this unit have limitations? Sure, but it also has tons of features and the sounds are really good IMO. I have had Casio products in the past, therefore familiar with them. I know of Yamaha, Korg, Alesis and sure they make good products too.
One feature of this keyboard at this price point is the ability to change the modulation on the organ sounds giving it a rotary speaker effect. I run L/R 1/4" cables out of the CT-S1000V and go to 2 amps . Sounds amazing. Sounds really good with running the CT-S1000V through my Vox Tonelab LE or Behringer MIC500PRE tube USB audio interface and then into my Tascam Model 12 to get some tube warmth. May try recording to cassette tape with the CT-S1000V and then transfer that to the Model 12 for a softer analog sound.
As for the vocoder side of this keyboard, yes it seems gimmicky on the surface, however, you can change many things about it and even add your own lyrics. Sure, the preset lyrics are campy, but if you tailor the words and adjust the tone, timbre, and age of the voices, select whether the whole phrase gets said upon keypress or break it up, it could be used and added in ways that take it out of the realm of a toy and as a great and affordably priced feature packed "arranger" keyboard.
I found one of these today for sale at $300. I wish it did more but it’s kinda fun to play….I don’t care about the vocoder…It’s interesting that you gave some love to the E-x50, your review was pretty negative due to it being a Medelli knockoff . It sells for $300 today. Was there anything you liked about it the most? Will send you a cup of coffee…
This keyboard has been the one I take 3 hours away when I help my parents (91 and 83 years old). I do love the sound a lot and if I choose to turn on the vocal synth, I tend to use the choir full sound and in the lowest registration. Then it has a voice similar to the choir sound on keyboards. I'm not exactly a fan of the more helium-voiced synth sounds. I don't use vocal synth very often. I found a CZcams guy who plays only the CT-S1000V (no other keyboard) and uses the vocal synth every time. I have to say that he squeezes a lot of out of it. He's not a reviewer; he just plays. (Pernard Burdie). But I tend to like his songs in the sweeter choir sound. My mom asks me to play for her when I'm there and is really impressed with the sound. I wouldn't be able to tote a regular 61 key keyboard to her house. Some people like the vocoder sound and many don't need it. The CT-S500 is more than enough for something small and portable to pack around. As always, thank you for directing people to the keyboard that meets their individual needs!
I really like seeing Casio experimenting fearlessly on their keyboards and the vocal synthesis sure sounds fun in a keyboard.
But I completely agree with you Jeremy, that a cheaper VST would do the job so much better than the comparatively complicated app and cable process in the Casio
I really do think the vocal synthesizer shouldn't be the main reason someone would want to pick this up...

Yeah, if anyone buys this for the vocal synthesis feature, they're buying it for the wrong reason.
Casio has done many great things, with each of the other brands having their own innovative features and creations. Casio definitely has great keyboards for affordable prices, and certsin features of the voice synthesizer are great, but the end result the sound, and abilities have limitations and shortcomings.
Maybe it can improve in future versions, and this may be useful for those that want that vocal sound. It is the only reason to get the CT-S1000V over the CT-S400, unless you like the red colored accents.
I may still get it. The other perknofvthesectwo keyboards over the Yamaha PSR-E473 is the more compact, portable format. It has great sounds, but I think the Yamaha has better sounds, more powerful speakers on the 76 key PSR-EW425, and not both brands have the pitch bend wheel and 1/4" L & R audio outs, but Casio has the wireless Bluetooth USB dongle included, but the Yamaha has data and audio USB connection.
The plus is that we have so many choices to fit our wants, needs and budgets to do what we want.

As always a great review Jeremy. If I could go back in time I think I'd have bought the CT-S500 instead, because it didn't take long for the novelty of the vocaloid to wear off. Other disappointments are no modulation wheel, which is preferable to a rotary knob and no DIN sockets for MIDI, but that's because my interest is in synthesizers rather than home keyboards. I'm not too concerned about the poor rhythm patterns as I have lots of drum machines, I just love how portable and light in weight the 1000V is and the built-in speakers mean I don't have switch on my amps, mixers, monitors etc or wear headphones to hear what I am playing. Above all it's a fun synth thatis very affordable and has some great sounds plus DSP facilities that I can record, just as much fun as the CT-S1 you helped persuade me to buy. I'm not sure I would call this keyboard 'flagship,' more like a fun dinghy to play around in.
Great feedback! It's a Casio "flagship" because there's no 61-key Casio keyboard higher end than this on sale right now.
Hello Jeremy, oh, that 's the naked truth, it' s a bit unbeliveable what they deliver after the successful ctx line and 3 years later... However, I love my c... 50....and it will also take me some years to get me to a save handling in live situations, there are so many functions an opportunitys to work the great value out... Don't know how many users dive in deeply in there instruments, no matter the brand in general.... Good Work, thanks for that Statement 👍✌️😎

As someone who has extensively used p125 and dgx 670…can you please answer two doubts if you have the time for it ?
1)internal speaker wise which sounds fuller and more realistic with better bass as specs on paper show inferior 6w amplifiers for dgx670
2)are there any comparable organ sounds in the dgx670 like the amazing pipe and tutti organs in the p125

I use the internal speakers a lot for the Piano playing and need great cathedral like organ sounds.

I constantly change my plans for gear, and am glad, like in the past, I was not in a rush to to get the latest gear, and including my next vehicle, because I found a new Honda I like more than the previous one that is more suited for me, at about the same price, and more cargo capacity, when comes in essential for shopping runs, moving things to and from my storage units, and yes, music and sound gear.
I have made wise choices for my present keyboards: Roland Go:Keys with 128 note polyphony, lots of nice sounds, good key action and texture, phrase loop function, and a lot more.
My Roland JD-Xi Analog/Digital synth with vocorder and 4 track recorder, lots of effects and advanced.
The Yamahs PSS-A50 a little portable take with you $100 keyboard thatvis a great controller. I just got an Apple iPhone SE 256G, and plan to get an iPad Mini 256G, and eventually a full blown Macbook Air later as my main computer. My iPhone and theviPad/Macbooks slso have GarageBand.
Roland's Go:Mixer Pro X has lots of versatility. And the Zoom H4n Pro portable digital audio recorder is great for many things.
I still want a Yamaha Reface CP for the compact portability like the PSS-A50 the tones and effects.
So, I may pass up on the Casios, and just stick with my Go:Keys since I am not a real active player/or performer. It's great for practicing, music study, composition, etc.
I will look at the Roland E-X50 with 256 note polyphony more closely, and may consider that instead, and not get the PSR-E473 as the PSR-EW425 has the 76 note keyboard and improved sounds, I can get for church later... and have the more portable Roland Fantom 06 as my ultimate keyboard when I get to that point.
The bottom line is, there are so many options available, at different price points to serve your wants and purposes to enjoy music however it pleases you to do so.
Portamento , now you dont get that on Midrange Yamaha's.

I want to see your review of the MZ-X500 arranger keyboard. I was thinking of getting to either pair with or replace my current Casio Keyboard, the WK-1800. Being able to know more about how its synth engine works, as well as how it compares to the much older Casio WK-Series Keyboards, such as the WK-1800 would be nice.

also, on the topic of polyphony, Casio's effects have no influence on the polyphony, so the polyphony can be lower, since it is only used for notes. For example, 32 voices in my WK-1800 does not include the DSP effects. Even though you can tune the amount of effect per instrument channel. The things that do influence polyphony are multi-escalator tones, and Layering. (Also the voice allocation on even older casio keyboards is top notch, only really having trouble in "Benchmarks" or "Tests" that would never appear when playing a normal midi file.) From my experiance, the casio if all the voices on the WK-1800 are in use, it allocates the oldest active voice.
But, there are newer, and better casios out there than the WK-1800, and so I am looking to replace it with something that is truly better, and that will let me emulate sounds I liked on the WK-1800.
A very helpful review pointing out the downfalls Jeremy, particularly for me, as I'm primarily a guitarist who is just looking for a decent arranger keyboard to help with songwriting.
For a full fledged arranger keyboard like this, it's very disappointing that it doesn't have 16-track MIDI sequencer

Ich war auf der Suche nach einem kleinen und leichten Keyboard mit gut klingenden Brot und Butter Sounds für spontane Jam Sessions und zum Üben, einfach und schnell zu bedienen, einschalten und sofort loslegen. Das CTS 1000 oder auch das 500er erfüllen dazu alle Bedingungen. Für Recording Anwendungen benutze ich andere Geräte, für das was ich mir vorgestellt hab ist es genau das Richtige, ich bin sehr zufrieden damit.

Found the s1000 discounted at 346 dollars at a local store, and it's actually 50 dollars cheaper than the s500. I was thinking to buy the s500, but seeing as the s1000v is actually cheaper, has this extra gimmicky feature (that I don't need, but would be fun), and also basically the same as the s500, I guess it's a no brainer. Gonna probably buy it with the next paycheck.

This keyboard sounds great, like others I mentioned, but I have been looking at the Roland E-X50, that is rolling out, with pre-orders available at $400 and being a long time Roland fan, will probably get this instead. 256 note polyphony, incredible sound and speakers, great connectivity, with the headphone jack at the front left. It has pretty much everything you could expect in that price range plus textured keys, too.
I would love to review it butni can't get a review unit from Roland as I'm just a tiny channel with no influence and Roland don't seem to take critique from my previous reviews well. 🥹

I picked up a pair of logitech pc speakers and subwoofer from a swap meet for like $20, and it makes it sound way better than the onboard speakers. I had a nice Arturia midi controller, but I got tired of having to hook up my laptop and navigate the software. Wanted a keyboard I can turn on and instantly start playing, but can still use for midi. Digital piano's are nice, but almost none of them have a pitch and mod wheel, and few are portable either. This keyboard checks a lot of boxes.

I've always liked Casio, and have really wanted to like this model, too. It's a flagship of the whole CT-S series, yet the voice synthesis feature seems so gimmicky to me. I'd much prefer that they used their R&D money to add 50+ more ambient/choir pad presets, to add 5-pin midi in/out din ports, and an ability to layer 3 or more upper voices (the new Korg i3 does that, so why can't they?). I'd love to see the polyphony at 128 voices, even if this ends up costing around $500-$600 with all these features.
The E473 is about 25% more expensive than the s500 where I live. Considering I won't use the rhythm section at all, I find it hard to justify the difference.

He usually mentions specific features that are better than the keyboard he is reviewing and puts the link in the Show more area and lists them by their specific feature that is better.
Man I was about to buy this one, but the limitations that you say as an professionalist it makes me feel not responsible if I were to buy it right now.

I don't agree to the critic points of this review. This keyboard is under 400 bucks, offering many very good sounds and useful features. It has absolutely nothing to do with a"flagship", but is a very good beginners keyboard in the affordable price range and offers a lot of fun, too. 😊
Hi there, I have a CT-S1000V and the piano randomly goes into K3 modulation even when I have set it at zero. Would anybody know if the keyboard has a problem and if I need to return it? Many thanks!

Once upon a time, the Roland VP550 was the Vocopocalyptis keyboard of choice at a reasonable $700 price tag. Now they all want $1000 plus for the same keyboard! The Casio CT-S1000V for $469 or less used, is just economically more sane if you want electronic voice synth keyboard.. Granted, you can buy a vocoder keyboard for close to the SAME price USED, the Casio is a nice mix of options. I agree about the one trick pony for $90 more is stupid. I do not own the keyboard and I am already tired of the same synth voice sound in YT demos lol! I would say the Vocaloid keyboard would be even worse. So that said, Buy a Roland V-synth GT for $4000USD and be done with it.. and with your savings account 😛

It's interesting but the vocoder-like feature is unnecessary and would only provide me minutes of entertainment.
Nothing beats a real vocoder.
A keyboard that has my interest is the Akai MPC Key 61. I enjoy composition, not performing. It's sad that Workstations are yielding to DAWs.
I watched a few vids on the mpc key 61. It's a nice concept but it's $2000. I'll just stick to using a daw, midi keyboard and vsts on a laptop for now.

And it's a bargain compared to a Kurzweil K2700 which was my original intended device. I got a couple DAWs but hardware in the loop is more important to me than saving a few bucks.

the ct-x700 has an horrible keybed... the keybed of the ct-s500 or 1000v are very good

@@philippequenin6656 Besides, I don't have anything to contrast the X700 with, so it doesn't matter to me. I'm almost 70 and just want something to make music with. I don't require perfection.
@@GaryR55 its keybed is ok, but it is very slippery. I have a CT-X800 and while I like the touch responde and size, sometimes my fingers slip in fast solos when they have are sweating. I live in a country with hot weather, that's why sometimes my fingers sweat when playing the keyboard.
If you live in a cooler country or don't have any problems with that, I recommend a CT-X700 or 800, they are very good keyboards for the price.

The Casio CDP 220 is the best intermediate digital piano under 600 bucks in my opinion.
I don't know if it is under your budget, but try looking for Yamaha P125, Casio PX-S1000 or Roland FP-10 or FP-30.

For me the voice function is useless .I find the sound irritating , and everyone will be using it , and sound the same .ctx5000 , Yamaha e473 for me is better .

Another toy from Casio! I don’t see the purpose of vocal synthesis other than it’s fun just for kids! This is not a serious instrument. Too bad Casio doesn't know how to make a real arranger or workstation ... they never even knew how, so they stayed in the lower segment.
