My Jacobite ancestors fought in this battle and lost everything. It was a tragedy. I have a friend who visited Culloden, and she had to leave because she said that she was so affected by the atmosphere there, she felt very ill. She recovered when removed from the place. The ghosts are still there.

Rivers of Scottish blood shed. And most gave it willingly for a cause they believed in. The Outlander scenes and the song really hit a nerve. I feel quite emotional about it. Well done. You got across your point very pointedly and movingly.

    The Ghosts of Culloden
Can you hear them, can you see them
    Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
Many bravely fought and sadly they were slain,
But they died with such pride and dignity,
Their lives were not in vain,
    We still remember them,
They fought to save their land, and died for liberty.
Can you hear them, can you see them
    Marching proudly across the moor,
Hear the wind blow thru the drifting snow,
Tell me can you see them, the ghosts of Culloden.
Thru the mist you'll hear - a lonely piper play,
    Listen carefully - you'll hear - a mournful cry,
Swords and bayonets crash - as man to man they clash,
They came to fight to live - and now they die.
    Can you…

RIP to all my Paterson ancestors who fought there. In one fell swoop of being encouraged to watch Outlander I felt my mother's father's blood boil inside of me...what a story that was virtually forgotten, covered up and basically ignored in History. Scotland has a right to BE as she is and with her plaid and her own culture. Thank you Diana Gabaldon for bringing this history back to us all who have Scottish roots and ancestry and recognize once again our TRUE BRAVE HERITAGE!!!

Every battle has its ghosts. There's always a winner and a looser. Colloden was just the defining symptom of the scouring of Scotland. The British were so pissed with having to deal with yet another rebellion that orders were given to slaughter anything that moved, having to do with the rising or not. For many miles around everything was killed, men, women, children, dogs, cattle, goats, even chickens. Fields were burned, homes were destroyed foodstores stolen. The Duke of Cumberland commanded they would have peace by ridding Scotland of Scots, and he came very close.
For a dozen years after any man found with a wound, new or old, was considered an escapee from the field of battle and unceremoniously shot or hanged by the road for insurrection, even if the man couldn't have been old enough at the time to have been included. Whole villages of women and their children were herded out of their homes and the village burned, leaving them to die in the winter weather. Any boy over twelve was hanged or shot. Some counts say as much as fifty percent of the Scot people died. A deep famine that developed in the next several years killed more or drove people to sell themselves and their children as indentured servants and emigrate away. It was joked about in England that they should re-name Scotland to Sheepland because there were more sheep than people left.

Complete hokum. The Highlanders called the battle Drumossie Moor. The Government called it Culloden after the neary Culloden House. The battle was fought in mid-April, so not a lot of snow around. Blood on the snow is an image of the Massacre of Glencoe in the laste 1690s. "Libertry" meant the continuance of the feudal Highland System - complete with serfdom. The Highland System also suported an Absolutist Catholic Monarchy like Charles I and James II/VIII. There would have been a Restoration of the Stuarts that would have returned Britian to Catholicism. There would have been no Industrial Revolution, or Imperial Expansion. There would have been no protestant-based liberal rights eg Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion/Conscience. Britiain would have ended up a rural backwater; more like Spain or Italy, rather than a military and economic superpower in the 19th century. Thank God, the Government won!! Some may wish to note that more Scots fought with the Government than the Pretender. More English fought with the Pretender than with the Government.
