Hi Scotty my car doesn't have a radiator cap system. Can we use this tester in the coolant reservoir
SCOTTY YOU ARE A ROCKSTAR. Now gimme dat tool. Lol
Thanks Scotty, for the education and presentation...nice job!
Sometimes I blow head gaskets trying to figure out why my car is misbehaving, but then I remember about Scotty 😜👍🏼
Hey Scotty, I've worked on my own cars for years, mostly because we can't afford to pay someone unless absolutely necessary, and finding your CZcams channel has been a big help. My two kids each just bought their first cars and I find myself forwarding the links to them on a regular basis. Especially your videos with the top 10 do's or don'ts. Thanks for sharing your expertise.
Scotty, I just want to thank you for all of the videos you make for us. I can't tell you how many times your videos have helped us and how many times I've shared your videos with friends and family members. Thank you so much for everything!
I've been working on my own vehicles for years and am a heavy jet aircraft mechanic but have never actually seen a head gasket test done until now! Thanks for showing me!

Awesome as usual. Thanks Scotty. Been watching for years and I’ve gained a lot of confidence with engine repair during that time. 😎
Scott, thank you for the work you do to, and for the users of this channel. I have saved myself from purchasing a nightmare using your advice and have also made better decisions buying used cars because of your content. Keep it up!!!!!
Hi Scotty! Great video as always. I’m glad to see someone so energetic and passionate about cars. Your videos are quite helpful and I thank you for taking time out every day to share this with us.
Thanks for all your videos, Scotty. I've learned a ton of information from you, and will always appreciate this channel.
Wow, this video is really giving me more knowledge about cars
Love your channel man...lots of great content...really good advice and tons of knowledge to help with car maintenance.
I borrowed a friend's fluid leak tester and it worked pretty good. You're videos really show someone who doesn't know much exactly how it can be done by a diy'er.
Morning Scotty always nice to watch your videos

Hey Scotty! Watch your channel alot you have saved me lots of money and provide me awesome info. Feels like free school. Many blessing to you. Keep revving engines man!

I could really use one of those Head Gasket Test Kits. Thanks for all you do for us mere mortals, looking forward to more, all the best.
Thank you for another informative video, Scotty.
Those kits are super handy, especially when buying a used vehicle.
yeah but if someone puts in one of those gasket seal products you're screwed.

Wish I had done the test on a car I just bought. I’m about to do it but I’m pretty sure it’s the head gasket

Hi Scotty, ever since I started watching your channel I have learnt a lot about cars. Thank you, for helping everyone with their car issues.
MECHANIC MONDAYS!
THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO!
Thanks for the quick lesson I needed the refresher for sure. Also this trick of the trade to determine weather or not my currently non-working vehicle is a junker or if i should invest the cash to fix is awesome. I will definitely pass on the knowledge thanks again fir all the good videos
That looks amazing. My old GMC truck would be a good tester for that.
I never understood how most cars incessantly *ding* if you forget to close the door all the way or buckle your seatbelt, but *doesn't* make any noise when your car starts overheating? 🤔 maybe on brand new cars theyve added this?
Yes, modern cars will have it. My 2012 Focus started overheating once and it alerts the driver on the dash along with a ping.
Cheap cars no but on "luxury" cars yes like my 04 Mercedes if it overheats the dash turns red and beeps like crazy it even does it if I don't close the hood all the way and if it really overheats it displays a message to pull over immediately because it turns itself off to avoid engine failure....but on my mom's 07 Suzuki forenza the engine could be on fire and the car won't even beep...
And I think even Mercedes from the 90s did this so it's more about cutting cost on cheaper cars by removing features like this...
Because they want you to buy a new car!
My '06 VW Passat dings and flashes dashboard warnings at you even if the coolant level is just 1cm low in the reservoir! None of my other cars (Fords, Nissans or Volvos) have that feature though. It's all about cutting costs in manufacturing, hence most cars don't even have a washer fluid low light anymore.
Thanks Scotty, your videos are very helpful and informative. I learn something new everytime you post a video👍😎
You're the best Scotty! I've learned so much by watching your videos!
Hey Mr. Kilmer I admire your timeless and respect your well known work ethics including sharing knowledge on cars to the world...
I've become a expert car mechanic from watching this channel alone.
I've watched six seasons of House. I'm starting my medical practice next week.
I've been working on tractors for 3 days, I'm now a tractor mechanic 😉😂😑
You are probably better than most mechanics and will take better care of your car.
tbh he's not necessarily wrong. I used to do nothing on my vehicles myself, not even oil changes, never shown how and change shops are cheap enough. Well, it all started with the oil change shop I completely trust (distant family owns it, they aren't going to burn me) didn't even want to do an oil change on my newer Rav4 because the dealership (only folks who had worked on it) had cranked down and stripped the threading on the oil canister cover, there recommendation was to go back to the dealership and have them do the oil change where they'd be forced to replace it. I decided to instead order a metal one and install it (Toyota makes a metal one, yet stock installs a plastic one), and that was the start of me doing all my own work. Since then, I've seen all sorts of mechanic issues on my 3 vehicles. And that's not even counting the times they've ripped me off financially; most mechanics seem to just either straight suck, don't care, or are under such pressure to rush they do a piss-poor job.
So yeah, I'm more distrustful of mechanics than ever now, and if you do your due-diligence and can be a little technical and get your hands dirty, getting how-to and advice from youtube is probably the better way to go. Seriously. Just realize where your own limits are, you probably shouldn't jump straight into rebuilding an engine if you've never even changed a drive belt, for example.
@@saddestchord7622 I watched all 8 seasons. I don't think I want my own medical practice, but I have a snarky, cynical retort for damn near everything.
Even as a fairly experienced and seasoned Automotive technician, I still find informative value in your videos and continue to learn. I'm sure I would make great use of that head gasket tester.
Hi Scotty, Back in the day,(1989), we also used a Sun 1125 analyzer to sniff the steam vapor at the radiator neck on cars we were not sure of having a head gasket leak or crack.(we NEVER stuck the probe near the fluid). It worked quite well and we then tried to sell the owner on further testing if needed, using the analyzer test as a free preliminary test. Customers remember being treated fairly. Your videos are the greatest, thanks.
I was wondering how this test was performed. Thank you.
Just get one of those wonderfull Cadillac northstare engines, with in five minutes of overheating you now know what a blown gasket is! What caused it! water pump quit on the freeway, "End of car!
Excellent info this episode. I've never heard a better and clearer explanation on head gasket then this one.
You are the man Scotty! You have helped me many times and this video also. I sure could use a head gasket tester if possible.
Hey Scotty, thanks for the giveaway opportunity. This is my "clean non-offensive comment".
A Lexus LS with a blown head gasket? Rare, rare, rare. I'm sure the owner neglected that motor. Those 1UZFE motors go 300k miles easy.
doesn't matter how good the engine is if you neglect it, it'll have problems
That's GX

$200 in 1965 has the same buying power as $1600 in 2018
Draedo Still way cheaper than today
Yep. More expensive now but not exactly a minor expense back then.
Also factor in someone would have to be EXTREMELY low IQ to mess up a pushrod head gasket job whereas today there is a lot of room for error and on top of that people now have less discipline and the attention span of a sparrow.
@@HAL-dm1eh The attention span of a goldfish more like it.
Using an inflation chart, except most jobs then paid around $300 a week.
A head gasket job would cost many people more today than 2/3 of a week's pay.
Your very informative and not boring. Thanks for that and keep up the great work you do. From one mechanic to another. Thanks again
Thanks for all of your great advice! Missing a Scotty video is not an option :)
How to tell if you have a blown head gasket: Do you have a Subaru? If yes your head gasket is blown or is about to
@Randy Jackson I feel like it's a lack of maintenance and people just beating too hard on their cars thinking they're fast
It's TRUE. I used to love Subaru but after dealing with so many head gaskets on my and my families subarus I got tired of doing the job every couple of years.:(
I recommended my grandma to buy a head gasket rated for a high hp sti, but it costed too much and then they had to do it again about 30k miles later and still put another generic brand gasket
@@MoistChungus no. Ny grandmother drove her baja like a grandma would and did 3k oil changes everytime. The engines are just poorly designed. Newer ones are better but they still blow .
Guess Subarus are kinda garbage but they do well in snow and are easy to work on apparently
Doesn't help when people buy cheap auto zone headgaskets. I'd go performance if I had to replace it the first time.
I work at an auto parts and people have asked me how I learned so quick 😂 well here’s the answer CZcams expert

I got a real good mechanic scotty I got a 364 hundred thousand Crv my head gasket was blown somthing in my radiator busted and coolant was getting in the engine and I needed my starter replaced my mechanic took care of me well good I gave him free reign just wanted everything he could find fixed as long as it was a decent price, spark plugs replaced, head gasket fixed, radiator replaced, starter replaced alternator replaced, cleaned up all my stuff and all for 2,100
I had my head gastket blown on my old S10 and had the heads redone at 165000. Drove it home and the next day and started hearing engine rod knocking. Bad times then lol.
Awesome bro, it's so hard to find good mechanics that won't rob you blind. I wish Scotty lived near me.
Yes it's good to have a local guy like Scotty around to troubleshoot. There are somethings to work on when it comes to vehicles that are out of our troubleshooting scope so you need a Scotty!!!!!
generally if a head gasket is blown there are signs,... if your oil looks milky,DONT drive it anti freeze is in your oil= blown head gasket, if you see anti freeze leaking outside the block= blown gasket and lastly alot of white smoke out your exhaust= blown gasket
you got an amazing price, the starter alone is a $500 job.
These videos are so funny and very helpful!! They make you more knowledgeable about cars.
Dude... I love your videos. I've watched a lot and learned more than I can imagine
Scotty, you posted this video just as I noticed my V6 Accord has been losing coolant but there is no leaks!
Cernats Ross start praying 🙏🏻
White smoke coming out exhaust is a clue for a head gasket or coolant in your oil. Pull dip stick and smell for propylene glycol in oil, you can feel it too.
This video came at the right time for me. My truck is slowly losing coolant but its not dripping. Hmmmmm
@Rick O'Shea you are correct. A good lesson to read what autofill puts in because it doesn't always put in what you intended to type.
Always appreciate the knowledge 👏
I love your videos and really appreciate all this information! Thank you!
The best way to check for a blown head gasket is to get on your knees and push your nose in the tailpipe and inhale! Lol😂🤣
I won't be responsible for anybody passing out, do it at your own risk!😉🇺🇸🇯🇲🚗💥🗯🗯🗯
Thats not that far from the truth. If the gasket is that far gone and coolant is being burned the exhaust will smell sugary sweet and water will pour from the tail pipe
@@eriktruchinskas3747 I know!😉...coolant has a sweet smell, i just figured it would be funny how I wrote how to diagnose the problem...sometimes people's pets would drink it and get sick, I think nowadays they make it repulsive to pets.🇺🇸🌴☀️🌴

Volvos headgaskets never blow! They are built from tanks and old Nokia phones
Really? I was thinking to use this on my Volvo S60. I checked a couple of days ago and the coolant was low.
Your head gasket may have a small leak but more possible it’s just a coolent leak in the radiator or heater core but sure a test for your head gasket is not a bad thing to do and Then you know for sure if it’s that or something else
Thank you Scotty! You’re the mechanic 👨🔧 Superman !!!
Love your videos. This tester kit is much cheaper than changing the engine or head gasket in my car.And you can avoid blowing the head gasket in the first place.
Scotty I have a Audi a4 with a 1.8t that has oil in the coolant do you think it's the head gasket
Most likely. Symptoms may be slightly different depending on where it failed. The most obvious ones are overheating and a big, white cloud of smoke coming from the exaust

Hopefully not. A lot of his videos are informational, but he is somewhat gimmicky and his age-ist bias really suffocates the veracity and seriousness of his content. Plus, attacking other CZcamsrs in his field was a costly mistake, one that he might have to live with awhile.
I watch his videos mostly for entertainment, probably because he reminds me of my Grampa. Sure, I can learn SOME things here n there, but I gotta sift through most of his content to find those precious little jewels of legitimate information to find anything. Which is why I am not a subscriber.

He didn’t. She probably knew it was blown and asked him to change a belt or something. When he was done she called him later saying her car is overheating and was told it was the head gasket. She tricked him into either fixing it or paying for it to be fixed. Women are very crafty like that.
