Brian Kernighan is a professor of computer science at Princeton University. He co-authored the C Programming Language with Dennis Ritchie (creator of C) and has written a lot of books on programming, computers, and life including the Practice of Programming, the Go Programming Language, his latest UNIX: A History and a Memoir. He co-created AWK, the text processing language used by Linux folks like myself. He co-designed AMPL, an algebraic modeling language for large-scale optimization.

That has not changed, the drivers might not work, the UI might be buggy at at times but one thing always works. The Terminal which means that everything works if you have the time lol

Who actually made the operating system nowadays known as "Linux" was Richard Stallman and everyone involved in the GNU Project. Sure, Linux, the kernel, is a very important piece of the OS, but what Richard did is so underrated. He sometimes may sound like some crazy neckbeard, but he's very, very important to what we have now: "open source" would be a proprietary bullshit without him, defending free software.

ya, pretty much everything he said "*was* good about unix", *is* good about plan9 (9front) right now.

Stallman would kill you for calling him the father of Open Source. He’s pedantic like that.

He's not pedantic, he's right. Free software is one thing, open source is another. Take a look at Unreal Engine: the code is publicly available, but it's licensed very strictly.

Not pednatic. Free software >>>>>>>>>>>> open source aoftware

he also said that Stallman 'started thinking about this stuff' in the late 80s, when it was in 1983 that he announced the GNU project
