Sonic LAB: Korg Nu:Tekt NTS-1 Synth

- This little kit form single voice DIY kit was released last year as a commercial manifestation of the development board Korg released the previous year at Superbooth. Which is a DSP synth voice, with user a programmable Oscillator slot and custom effects (assuming you are C- savvy)
Its easy to put together and has a simple display, three knobs, and 7 buttons. It kind of looks cheap and chip-tune like. But that is not what it sounds like...

That thing is freaking incredible. Reverb...it's like a blue sky that's also a synth! I think Korg is winning the innovation game.
21:20 , the submarine.
I just love Nick's reaction!
Ooooh. Say no more.
Oh, that's nice. Tell me that's not lovely.
Just finished watching Bladerunner, so imagine my face at the 21:00 mark. Entering Vengelis territory with that massive verb, and the way you sneak in extra pseudo-voices because of it. Wonderful stuff! Thanks for sharing.
Once you got to the effects I was sold on it. Wonderful sounding so powerful for such a small device. Amazing thanks for showing this.
22:11 Musical G-spot right there :D! It is an amazing bit of kit, I am making those faces all the time :)).
I got one as an external effects unit for my semi modular synths and I'm absolutely loving it. The delays and reverbs both sound amazing. Then there is the synth itself. .. jeez this little guy packs an awful lot into a tiny box. So good, well done Korg
I've got mine since a month or so and the mailman delivered a beatstep pro this afternoon. Ran into the midi issue as well, worked around it by taking an old aux cable, ripping one of the jackplugs off and soldering it back together with the left and right cables switched. Works just fine now!
I really don't understand? I have a midi adaptor into midi in no issues. Nick is running his keyboard into sound out on the NTS-1 makes no sense to me?
Thanks for taking the time to make an interesting video for us to watch, Nick. I love your videos.
Was on the fence about this until you demonstrated the effects. WOW!
Those reverbs are ace!
Thanks Nick, what an amazing tiny box of epic sounding tricks! Will done Korg.
Buying one. Needs to happen. So many possibilities in such a small package.
That submarine verb...
Worth it just for the effects.
Outstanding
I love this little guy, sounds awesome and the effects are beautiful...!
Thank you for this great video. A very powerful and inexpensive effects processor alone is worth the price
I have one of these on order, due soon hopefully. Perfect timing and as ever very informative. Cheers.
Good man Nick I appreciate the extra content
Crackling review, Nick. I really need to get one of these. Sounds amazing.
Community “We are entering the Korg golden era”
Korg: Here, build your own shit
Lol! Exactly! Behringer is just going to send you a 3D printer file and say "make it."
Me: Golden era? nah
I was not expecting this to sound so good!
You've done it again. Had to order one. Right up my simple alley. Stay safe.
Had mine a few weeks and love it, currently using it as a 5th osc and FX for my DSI Pro2
You beast.
Thank you Nick! From the day this was released, I planned on using this in my AUX effects loop of my mixer.
Ooph that's such a great idea!
@@GuidoGautsch All those external audio inputs on synths I never use, then the MinilogueXD is released and I say "I take one please". Then I find out they didn't put and audio input on the XD so I could use the effects for other synths. So this little NuTekt is a great addition for those with original Minilogues, maybe a better idea to have the Minilogue and the NuTekt than to buy a just the XD??? :)
A couple days ago, Tim Shoebridge released a user oscillator called CHORD specifically for the NTS-1 that splits the oscillator into 4 parts, allowing it to play a variety of chord shapes. He's also written a few other great oscillators for this line of synths. Might be an interesting guest for SonicTalk! P.S. I've been using the Teenage Engineering brand midi dongles with this and they work.Great video!
This sounds cool, gonna have to check it out!
2getheraudio has made more practical and interesting ones from what I've seen, like the wavetable emulator and a supersaw
Awesome job Nick, thanks for putting this up! Coincidently mine arrives later today! Cheers!✌️🎹🎵🎼🎶
It is an absolutely lovely little synth :D
Great demo Nick. The NTS-1 is an amazing little instrument and you didn't even get to showing us some of the amazing 3rd party custom oscillators and effects available.
Thank you, Nick. Awesome sounds. Always great demos!
Just ordered, thanks sonicstate. Sold me!
Thank you nick, that's a really nice review as usual. That makes me want to buy one for when on the go with my 1010music Blackbox, and a Prologue when I'm at the home-studio :) :) :)
Great video Nick, that's now on my shopping list
Terrific review as usual. Your face at 22.11 is a joy.
Korg/Line6 is Type "A"; Arturia/Novation is Type "B"; and there are a few odd balls ( IK Multimedia) wired as type "B" but with a 2.5mm TRS instead of 3.5mm. It's madness the MIDI association should have squashed years ago.
I got one second hand last week, and so far it's an amazing unit!
Been waiting for this one Nick, cheers!! Looks & sounds like a no brainer to me. Like a (very!) poor man's Strymon 'Big Sky' ... Chat in tomorrow's live stream, be safe! 🖐😷🎹👍🍻
I love you Nick. You are the person I always want to hear more from.
Brilliant had it 6 weeks never knew this cheers
Great video I just bought mine recently and I love it!!!!
Amazing little thing. Would be even more awesome if it was built in the Volca range.
Love it, the fx section make it shine 🌞😎👍
Great video! I received mine almost three weeks ago, but haven’t put it together yet. After watching the video I need to get on it. Along with the device I also ordered the Korg Volca nubass Vacuum Tube Synth and MODAL SKULPT AND Craft Synth which have been keeping me occupied.
Excellent presentation. I want it!!!
Now that I've got one, and loving it, I am TOTALLY gonna pick up another one. My mixer does, after all, have two sends ;)
Utterly amazing value for money, great for desktop setup.
I put larger knobs on, a usb on off switch and a custom case with sides to angle the unit.
Just got mine. The value of sound is impressive. With a pocket operator you could really do a lot especilly sync jam. Great install/raview
As usual a great video so thank you. This is on my wishlist as I'm after effects for my Volcas and although there re some good affordable effects pedals, this may be just what I need instead.
So small yet so powerful, I reckon I'll get one soon
I just got mine in the mail about 3 weeks ago. It's worth its weight in gold alone! With the "submarine" Reverb!🎹🎧💫😵👌😎👍
Picked one up at the pawn shop today for $50, very helpful.
22:20 Nick.....it’s more than lovely. Cheers for showing us a guilt free synth in this current climate.
Indeed! Sounds great
@@dep1001 ?! Guilt Free?!
"Now tell me that's not lovely..... Wow" 22:08 Gotta luv it!
its wife safe, does not cost much
Lester - Wavestate-404 sold it to me completely, those five notes he play two minutes earlier... the synth god indeed
Would love to use a Volca FM as the audio input source. Great stuff, Nick. Stay safe. Cheers!
smashing, love it. Thanks Nick. I think I will use it as an FX unit as a send on my tascam tape machine.
One thing to note, it auto powers off at 15mins which is rather annoying
Thank you Nick
Very versatile instrument!
26:08 great shimmer like effects!
Great video Nick! Haven't seen an M-Audio Venom in a long time too.
George Kay I bought one about seven years ago it`s actually a good synth.
I must get this!
Nick is not just a techie, you can tell he has absolute musicality flowing through him, and seems like a thoroughly nice bloke too! I’ve always used his reviews as the final say in my buying gear. A long time listener/viewer that wants to say thank you so much for all the content you’ve provided over the years, Anyone know what names he records his own material under?
Mr Pelham en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DNA_(duo) - hopefully you’re familiar with this track...
czcams.com/video/jWMToInrke0/video.html
He used to work with another guy as DNA, but also has done some synth programming work for Alison Goldfrapp (of Goldfrapp).
Worth it just for the reverb,,,sounds real phat man,,,have to get one...
Sounds great! i use the SQ-1 with mine.
Rad! I need this lil guy
Tnx for making more content for us thumb twiddlers : )
Suggestions:
-Play something for us, like a mini concert.
-Tell us about your music, how you think when making and maybe some tricks for beginners as well as more experienced musicians.
-Recommend other musicians and channels you like.
"ooh, that's nice - I wasn't expecting that" - MB
Amazing sound for the price!
For digital synthesizer it sounds pretty phat.
This is a really neat piece of gear for the price. You can get some downright Vangelis sounds from it. Not thrilled about the midi interface though. Without the proper cable you can't unlock the full potential. I'd also like to see a bit more controls on the front panel, being able to only access them through a DAW is a bit of a drawback. Otherwise it's a good little instrument. Sounds incredible. Great video, Nick! Loved the actual how-to assembly part of it. Stay safe!
you can actually access to the same controls via midi/daw than in the front panel (with button combos, of course). The real downside is not being able to access via midi to the custom osc/fx submenus
@@promisingyoungster2727 It would be nice to see a better interface for those who like a hardware/DAW-less setup is all. Otherwise, sonically it sound amazing!
But I’m not sure what you mean with controls that you can only access through a daw...
There is no lack of MIDI connectivity. It supports MIDI input and output over both USB and TRS. The TRS MIDI jack is Type A, recently chosen as the official standard. If you have other devices with a Type A jack (for example, the Novation LaunchKey Mini mk3), you can connect it directly with any TRS 1/8" cable. You can get a TRS-to-DIN adapter for a few bucks that will let you connect it with any standard DIN MIDI cable.
14:14 I would by a NTS-1 Delux Edition if a physical edition was made like that editor version! Would be awesome.
That Pulsar teasing us in the background...
Nice at 21. Sounds like numan I'm sold
Can incoming audio be send through the filter? Or only through the fx section?
Hey, Nick! Nice video! I'm thinking of getting one of these grumpy babies. I didn't quite understand which type of MIDI adaptor is needed to connect it. I know each brand developed different wirings for their TS to MIDI DIN adaptors and the MIDI Association standarized them, but not everyone follows the rules. Do you know which brand of adaptor is right for the Nu tek? Thank you!
OMD vibe arpeggio 16:15 Nice sounds
saved my locked down fever. Thank you!
It's my birthday today and I've been trying to get a Korg NTS-1 for weeks as a b-day present to myself (sad I know). It's out of stock everywhere either in a 'pre-order and sometime we'll get some' or a 'don't even bother, we don't know when this is coming back' way presumably due to multiple current reasons. So I'm happy at least that I can watch this video of Nick using one :D (and use some of this time to learn more about my Microkorg)
Real good review. Nobody tells about midi adapter may give problems.
Just got my nts1 two days ago but the kit was missing the two sliver side panels but iv made two that will do to keep the dust out till I get the case from Etsy ...its a cool little synth iv not had the chance to put it into a midi controller yet
Nick, how would a mono input sound through? I would like to buy one for my Sub37
How did you guys recorded the sound? As soon I connect it to my audio interface I get a ground loop noise! Any solutions?
14:27 But does it have PWM? Yes, yes it does.
The Pope of PWM
Just the little bieggining of this vid mixed in with sonic Talk last week prompted me to look into this and a little bit later I was ordering off of Zzounds and it arrived THE NEXT DAY. TBH, I'm getting more out of this than I did the Nyx; plus the reverb is miles better (and in stereo). There are some great custom oscillator and delays for it too. I'm in the middle of making an instrument rack in Drambo that can control all the controls plus LFOs to use on the same controls.
You should review those custom osc models too!
The PWM is the same knob as the Pitch Mod. That control is bipolar so the the pitch lfo mod is negative and the PWM is positive
A link to the correct midi cable would be good pal !! Great vid as usual .
Pulsar23 box real close.. from preview to review soon? Such a tease!
KORGtastic!!!
There is an MAudio Venom in that studio... 😳
Could you plug this into the patchbay of a mother 32 for some easy verb/delay? Can't find anyone doing that
Nice to see Reaper there.
Just got mine there is a midi out header on the board I wonder if it would work if connected up
I saw this and i bought 1 now. Thanx. going to be fun. But, what was it i bought? hmm need to watch the rest of the video,
Any chance to use it as an monophonic vocoder?
Anyone know what the red synthesizer is made by? An model possibly? Looks fantastic an would love to check it out;)
I never understand why Korg don't create their own patch editing software, it would make the products they sell much easier to program.
Nice lockdown beard. :-)
This might be worth a noting here: the NTS has a 15 minute shut off timer. If you'd like to use it as a signal processer to add fx you'll have to baby sit it, or it will shut off on you mid-song.
Yep. I've been thinking of making a simple Max For Live thing that sends some CC value every 10 minutes that doesn't affect the sound - perhaps "tremolo rate", since I don't really use the tremolo. But this really needs to be fixed by Korg in a firmware update.
Was lucky to receive it (at long last: was ordered last October!) just before lockdown. Now been playing it connected to a micro Freak and a Theremon.👍👍👍. btw, adaptated to it 3 "real" knobs just to improve its look a bit.
Easy to build but... RTFM, so as not to forget installing the kbd strip first...
Another piece of advice: the food practice is to put all the screws and parts in small plastic containers (box, Tupperware, coffee pot lid, whatever) so as not to lose any of those tiny bits on the carpet or between floor boards...
I love mine it's like a MINI XD Mono :)
With an audio in! The one thing I wish mine had
waiting for korg-nts-8 ( it's my hope for a polyphonic reissue of this amazing device )
It sounds nice, but I didn't understand something at first. Digital synth but no preset memory on it?
As soon as he hit that fat submarine reverb note. We both said in unison: Uuuuuuuuuuuuuu!
@sonicstate Thanks for the review, I dont understand how or why your running midi from the Arturia into sound out on the NTS-1 ? Can you explain please
We're not, USB out of Arturia into Laptop, MIDI out over USB into NTS-1
@@sonicstate thanks, was having a bit of a brain freeze moment.
Great sound for the money, but my audio out had a dry solder joint which popped after inserting a cable. Resoldering failed and now my NTS is mono
