Underrated by whom???? By your neighbourhood? By your fellow citizens???? You are the one Who decides if you like It. I Will never understand that statement
Nobody plays guitar like Mark. That finger picking style is all his and he owns it. He makes that Stratocaster sing, cry and wail like nobody else could. Lions is my favorite from the debut album.
Lions grew to one of my fav Dire Straits songs over the years as I appreciate it more every time I hear it. Can't say enough about Mark's virtuoso talent.
No matter how much I listen to Mark throughout the years and all the different Strats that he had it still comes down to this single first strat he started with. Mark's tone is a masterpiece!
I actually stopped my car on a highway, pulled over, because this song came on and I had no clue who it was. I already loved SOS by them, but this song surpasses any song by them in my book, because, I fucking pulled over on a highway just because I heard it - no song has done that to me except Lions.
Funny, that's the very same experience I had hearing Sultans of Swing. It came on the radio and started cutting out as I drove. I pulled onto the shoulder and kept creeping forward until reception was better. Thankfully, at the end they mentioned Dire Straights. I scralled it into a college notebook and went looking for it the following day. I knew a guy running a local record shop and he had gotten the album in the day before. I was the first guy in town to buy it. those first two records are still my favorites.
The more you read into the lyrics the deeper mark takes you on another journey. This whole Rockpalast Gig is top notch. Truthfully I like anything by Mark and DS including syndey but this concert is the best. Mark Knopfler and Dire Straits before they were big and just doing what they loved. Thank you so much for the Music, The memories and the tears that I have shed throughout the years I have followed you Mark. You are truly my Hero.
wasn't lorry driver at all, he was hitchhiking quite often trying to get from the North to London and back (Southbound again), very often lorry drivers were giving him a lift
This is the best ever line up of DS in my opinion. Mark and David Knopfler , John Isley and the great Pick Withers created a sound on the first 2 albums that was so evocative and different to what everyone else was doing ( except maybe JJ Cale ). Great musos, great songs, well produced, this sound hasn’t aged at all. I still listen to all their albums all the time and never get tired of it, but to me the first albums are special.
I can't believe how much better this sounds in HD. Before you could barely hear it. What a show this was. They played the whole first album and Communique.I don't think the people in this audience knew what a treat they were getting.
Thank you for posting this. This is my favorite song from their first album. It has such a somber but at the same time magical mood. The lyrics are picturesque, "high heeling across the square. Wind blows around in her hair." Church bells, drunk old soldier, starlings, lions. A great piece of music and lyrics. This version is a very good quality. Thanks again.
Those were the grand old days! I'll never forget the day when I heard their first album with this piece on it for the first time. I was simply stunned. Thanks so much for posting this great live version!
I am here in WA. ST. smoking cannabis oil & I just had something like an out of body experience while listening 2 Mark Knopfler make his guitar gently weep just as well, if not better than Eric Clapton. WOW can! M.K. play. PEACE-OUT & By 4 Now
I start sweating everytime I watch this, good grief, your shoulders, hands, arms, voice got to be sexiest ever.... Oh, sorry, did I just write that??? I should know better....
i can see his soul is floating around the stage. so he could thin like that. how dare a human could plays guitar in this level. this is another league. sorry my poor english. but that's my opinion actually.
Red sun go down way over dirty town Starling are sweeping around crazy shoals A girl is there high heeling across the square Wind blows around in her hair and the flags upon the poles Waiting in the crowd to cross at the light She looks around to find a face she can like. Church bell clinging on trying to get a crowd for Evensong Nobody cares to depend upon the chime it plays They're all in the station praying for trains Cogregations late again It's getting darker all the time these flagpole days Drunk old soldier he gives her a fright He's crazy lion howling for a fight. Strap hanging gunshot sound Doors slamming on the overground Starlings are tough but the lions are made of stone Her evening paper is horror torn But there's hope later for Capricorns Her lucky stars give her just enough to get home Then she's reading about a swing to the right But she's thinking about a stranger in the night I'm thinking about the lions tonight What happened to the lions.
@kissthesettingsun i can listen to this song at least 100 times and not get bored, perhaps even more.......it's amazing the rhythm-section of this song!
Almost every studio track would end with a disappointing fade out yet live the endings are dynamic, dramatic and form such melodically natural conclusions that one wonders why he didn't record and release the songs that way?
SEVERELY underrated and one of my favorite songs on their debut album
every straits song is underrated
The BBC version is brilliant
Everything on that Album is underrated except Sultans.
100% agree.
Underrated by whom???? By your neighbourhood? By your fellow citizens????
You are the one Who decides if you like It.

Totally agree wonderful track
Lions is my favourite dire straits track of all time
The only other person I can think of who’s a great finger picking guitar player is Lindsey Buckingham
@@Niuway44 Agree..don't think Lindsey gets enough recognition
His mind is strictly rhythm he don't wanna make it cry or sing
Anyone still listening?
God yes, and still with tears in my eyes
❤❤❤
His music is absolutely uplifting ❤❤❤
🎉no joke this is my favorite song 🎉
The most underrated rock song ever

Multi Pass are you still listening
@@terrydavidson5052 Always
Yaa Knopfler is amazing, he plays his stuff with fingers and he has the most recognizable sound on stratocaster, no one can beat him
This guy was and is still unbelievably good, he will be my guitar hero for my life
Working-class Shakespear...that is Mark Knopfler to me. This is breathtaking.
Vanessa Creech That's a brilliant description.
True. But when he started out her was a school teacher and a lorry driver. Plus he is from Newcastle.
the only problem MK is no working class himself, highly educated as you know, grew up in educated family
wasn't lorry driver at all, he was hitchhiking quite often trying to get from the North to London and back (Southbound again), very often lorry drivers were giving him a lift
Beautifully put.
Yep still listening ❤

Sappi che ti capisco, son contento che sebbene pochi, sia rimasto qualcuno a cui piaccia musica decente.
I was a teen when this album came out. We would cruise Grand Avenue at night in my buddy's Camaro with the 8-track blasting this song.
I love how they all seem so relaxed and enjoying themselves, Mark especially.
MK's guitar spooky ,haunting, unforgetable

MK is a genius who has just gotten better with age.
This is one of, if not my favorite, DS songs!
I can't believe how much better this sounds in HD. Before you could barely hear it. What a show this was. They played the whole first album and Communique.I don't think the people in this audience knew what a treat they were getting.
Can’t agree more
One of my favorite songs from this band...my god, that cool groove...
Beautiful chord progression too.
he doesn't miss a note... what an amazing guy
Back in the day when you could show up on TV looking like a sleep-deprived philosophy professor, and it was totally ok
Because back then musicians had REAL talent and skills and didn`t have to hide their lack of talent behind their looks like these days....
Awesome song beginning to end.
The debut is such a great album. Love their other work too, but it has such a live, fresh sound mixed with Dylanesque surrealism and JJ Cale stylings

Your English is fine.
"high-heeling out across the square"
Always loved that description of a woman's walk.
Gorgeous
Great Song , Great Video , Great !
Amazing guitar player. Very unique 👍

Thanks man it’s been so many years trying to work out the lyrics!
Are the lions the Coad stone lion on Waterloo bridge? Just curious
He is the f**** man. No doubt. I love all his stuff.
amazing
