Wembley 85 live. The supreme version of this song. Loved the reaction. Thanks.😊

Live versions - Wembley 85 or Sydney 86 in particular, are even better and longer. Absolutely MUST listen!

But also 1991-1992 versions. E.g. the one included in On the night live album recently added to a new box release "Dire Straits Livve 1978-1992"

The piano player on this album is Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band.

This was Marks fathers favorite Dire Straits song, after his father died he never played it live anymore. This song is a bit Springsteen like, it was produced by Jimmy Lovine who produced songs like "born to run" for Springsteen. It also has Rot Bittan on piano and oprgan who played with Springsteens E street band because Dire Straits did not have a keyboard player at the time, Alan Clark joined Dire Straits after this album was recorded.

The Spanish City is a venue in Whitley Bay that Mark Knopfler used to visit in his youth. Back then it was an amusement arcade (hence the reference to having "the one-armed bandit fever") with a funfair outside ("getting crazy on the waltzers", "riding on a ghost train", "the big wheel keeps on turning" etc.). It subsequently fell into disrepair and when it was renovated and turned into a dining and leisure centre the lines "Girl it looks so pretty to me, like it always did. Like the Spanish City to me, when we were kids." was embedded into the paving outside the entrance.

This song is truly one of the best. I could go on forever why I love this one, but its really incredible.

Brilliant song. Love the introspective story telling, dynamics, guitar solo, piano - everything really. In my opinion one of the best live performances of this song is from Wembley Arena '85 - worth checking out. Mark has expressed that he was partly reflecting on his childhood days spent at a funfair The Spanish City and using the amusement park setting as a metaphor for his life as the band grew bigger with all the chaos of touring etc. Thank you for your reactions!

Thank you for your reactions and for listening to entire albums. That is how we would listen to music back in the day..we would buy the album ( in my case, cassette) and run home to listen to the entire creation. This is a wonderful and emotional song, full of nostalgia from Mark Knopfler. His guitar sings with such emotion.

I grew up listening to albums too :) They are like books, a story that needs to be read in full to understand it.

During the making of this album Mark and his brother David had a severe falling out and David left the band. Ever since he has been making great music of his own, even though he has mostly been forgotten by most folks....

He wanted his own songs on a Dire Straits album, but the rest of the band agreed Marks songs were better. David never had much succes as a solo artist, but Mark did play on a few of his solo albums.

@@peterlewis5151 If you compare it to Mark they are not at the same level, also David never had much succes as a solo artist, even with his DS history giving him a boost

I believe David Knopfler has enjoyed a fair degree of popularity in Europe over the years and has certainly had a long career in music. Apparently he struggled with the intensity of touring with Dire Straits as their popularity grew, which was very stressful, and that was a significant contributory factor in his falling out with his brother and subsequent departure from the band. David's contributions to the Making Movies album up to that point were then re-recorded by Mark.

@@jjc5407Work travel is brutal. I was a white collar traveler for most of my decades long career and it was grueling for me. I developed all kinds of phobias. Hotel rooms to me were the worst part. When I was a kid and teen I loved staying at hotel rooms on vacations with my family. But once it was work related and very frequent it was very difficult for me after a few short years. The work I loved so much but the travel I came to hate entirely. So I cannot imagine being a performer because that's an even harder grind, I wouldn't be able to handle it. Money was never the motivator for me although I did well it was the work. So I guess going through all that performers do on the road it's all for that high of performing the music and getting that high from a big audience. Plus that's the only way performers make money.
