Back then, there were no bad games. Well there were, but I just didn't know they existed. I was only 5 or 6 when I got my mega drive. And I thought every game was amazing purely just by existing. There were a lot of terrible games I rented from blockbusters, but I just thought I was really bad at them, rather than them being bad games on their own. The only games I could beat every time were the sonic ones. But those have always been ludicrously easy games, that it always threw me off when I tried any other platformer and so now died in a couple of hits instead of having effectively infinite life. I used to think the mario games were the hardest games that existed, because of that.
I would have loved Awesome Possum but I never saw it, or even heard of it, until the 2010s. Apparently it never released in Europe, so that's why.

@@duffman18 There was definite stinkers that even as a kid you knew were no fun. It was rare but they did exist.
Looking back and I judge a game with how memorable they are to me now. Do I have good memories of the game ? That means it was a good game. Sometimes while watching these videos you'll see a game that you played as a kid but didn't even remember it, usually those were the "bad" games.

Another wonderful Genesis ranking video - and a quick Slap Fight tidbit!
For anyone unaware, Slap Fight MD includes two entirely different games. In addition to the port of the original Slap Fight / Alcon arcade game, it includes "Slap Fight MD" - an exclusive 16-bit upgrade to the original game, featuring new graphics; new mechanics; and an incredible soundtrack by legendary composer Yuzo Koshiro. It's an absolute must-play, in our opinion.
Unfortunately, authentic copies of the game are quite expensive; however, it is included on the Japanese version of the Mega Drive Mini, along with several other Japanese exclusives. Well worth checking out!

I got a Genesis for my birthday one year, and it came with Sonic 2 and Gauntlet 4. Sonic 2 was the game I wanted a Genesis for in the first place, but I'd never heard of Gauntlet 4 - my dad just wanted to include another game and thought the cover looked like something I'd like. Man was he right. I spent pretty much the entirety of that birthday playing Gauntlet 4 with my best friend, who is STILL my best friend nearly 30 years later. Awesome times.
Roadblaster was one of the first games I ever played in the arcade, back in the late 80s in France. I was so impressed by the graphics and the speed, as the only games I'd seen up to that point were on the Commodore 64. The Genesis port is great, and I think it's one of the best driving games on the Genesis. It has smooth scrolling, which is surprisingly rare for Genesis racing games (just look at Chase H.Q. 2 or the utter abomination that is the Genesis port of Turbo Outrun), and gives that same amazing sense of speed that so impressed me in the arcade game. Totally agree with your S-tier picks.

Gauntlet 4 isn't actually a port it started as an internal training project by a group of programmers that would become M2. It was based entirely on reverse engineering the arcade cab. Tengen caught wind of this somhow and after being shown their work offered to publish it if they added more content. To reiterate, everything in the Genesis version was purely done by eyeballing the original arcade cab, they had no access to the source code or assets and yet managed to duplicate everything perfectly right down to the RNG and enemy logic.

      Damn. That's pretty impressive.

    • @TheJeremyHolloway
      @TheJeremyHolloway Před 3 lety

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. Tengen was the Atari Games Corp. There was no need for them to reverse engineer the Atari Games arcade cab because again, Tengen was Atari Games. It was a made up brand because Atari Games couldn't use the "Atari" brand outside of the arcades because Jack Tramiel's Atari Corp owned those rights. Gauntlet 4 uses arcade source code. The famous version of Gauntlet that was eye-balled yet still turned out amazing was the Atari ST/Amiga version. Atari Games provided the guys coding it with an arcade cab to eyeball from but didn't share any of its source code.
Want to know why Tengen's NES cartridges were famously black? Because they were paying homage to the color of the Atari 2600 cartridges. It was a deliberate stab at Nintendo because Atari Games felt *they* created the video game industry and wouldn't put up with Nintendo's BS.

I know it was published after Tengen's acquisition by Time Warner Interactive, but they developed a certain college basketball game for the Genesis.
Which, as far as I heard, was quite awesome, baby.

Grind Stormer aka VV is a lovely chunky shooter. Always down with the toaplan graphical vibe. Also M2 strutting their early day stuff with Gauntlet 4 port. Straight out the gate showing their class.

Steel Talons was one of the first games I got for my Genesis back in the day. So it has a special place in my heart. And I actually beat that game when I first got it. So of course I bought it again a year ago or so. Because I had to have it again. Yeah it hasn't aged well, but I still love to play it. lol And I had no idea RoadBlasters was that good on the Genesis! One of my favorite arcades growing up. And boy did I pop the quarters in that game back then. lol

Is there any kind of steering wheel you can use with Roadblaster?
I'd only ever seen screen shots of it on the megadrive, but it looks pretty much spot on to the arcade.

I found Road Blasters at my local used game store last year and I do enjoy it. However, I am slightly surprised that it's ranked that high at the S level, but yes, it's still an all around good game.
I do enjoy the Paperboy games and they are my favorites here. I definitely understand the lower rankings of them as the controls and such, are not the best. I should dig up my old Tiger handheld of Paperboy that's hiding somewhere. Kinda miss playing that, lol.

It was minimalist art, unfortunately many customer got the impression that simple art would mean simple games. In the opposite side many 8 bit computers like the Spectrum had very simple games with awesome box art.

@@Hektols It was lazy art. They threw away the elegant Japanese art, and replaced it with ugly clip art that sometimes didn't even have anything to do with the actual game.

Love Dragon's Fury and Revenge (Fury does indeed edge out its sequel overall). Klax is my favorite puzzle game of all time. The Genesis port of Klax was actually ported by the original arcade game's programmer. It's definitely the best overall port of the game, but I think the TG16 version actually looks nicer and has a richer color palette.

  • @bananonymouslastname5693

I prefer your previous format. The commentary was still fun, but for folks familiar with the Genesus library, it kinda gives away the ending. I like the surprise of the rankings when done alphabetically better.

I absolutely love Klax! In my humble opinion i'd say the best home version is the Sega Genesis version (followed by the Amiga version), and the best portable version is the Atari Lynx (followed by the GBA). I don't recommend the NES, Game Gear, and Master System versions of Klax because of a bizarre design choice within the drop box - there is a weird amount of extra space between the outermost landing slots and the actual sides of the drop box. There's also not always a very smooth movement of tiles as they flip down the lane toward the drop box, especially on the game gear version where the tiles actually slightly go outside of their lane before abruptly shifting back into their lane.

The Turbo-Grafx 16 version of Klax is also highly regarded and valued...
