  • Smart Home Project Ideas!
    Today I'm going to show you a number of smart home ideas for your smart home! I love that I've been able to collect this list of smart home projects that you can watch and undertake if you're designing your #smart #home. There's a ton of home automation #ideas for automaters, just like you.
    The first project is an incredible garden box project from Nik Muller in Australia (and here's an amazing Facebook group for those of you from Australia) - / googlehomeaustralia
    The next project is my V3 SmartThings Hub replacement of my V2 SmartThings Hub. Here's an affiliate link to that hub if you want to get your own: geni.us/cpZCiBf (Amazon)
    Next up is Chris at HomeKitGeek @Chris Young and his CZcams channel. Go check him out here: / @homekitgeek
    Larry has made his own amazing IoT device! It's an air quality sensor with temperature and air quality, and you can check it out here: community.auto...
    We were lucky to have @Tech With Brett on the channel. He has an absolutely amazing channel, but he's been automating a new smart home office! Check out his channel here for great content about the smart home and the best smart phones: / @techwithbrett
    My second project is an Ebook! Our Amazon Alexa vs Google Assistant vs Apple Siri Ebook is live and available in almost every country. Here's a link to our page: automatelife.n...
    Peter has done a great job with his DIY table and his included Philips Hue light strip. Check out the details for his table here: community.auto...
    Matvei has done an amazing job showcasing how to create a smartapp yourself within Samsung SmartThings. Here's a link to the first video in his 5 part series that shows you exactly how to do this: • Video
    My Samsung SmartThings Vision will show up in my upcoming smart home kitchen tour! It's an amazing device and you get your first look at it here.
    Pete Walker's fantastic project is really a smart usage of a smart plug and a SwitchBot Meter and Hub in order to dehumidify his basement. He also has a great Homeseer light sensor pointed right at a light that tells him his dehumifier is full of water. Follow Pete Walker on Twitter here: / vpetewalker

    Excellent video Brian! if > 50% -> turn on TP-Link switch, if < 40% turn off. Homeseer HS-FS100-L (which I have powered via A/C, not battery) pointed to the light sensor. It detects when full, and sends me a notification via SmartThings. This was a bit tricky, since you must use its "button" via Webcore. It can detect blinking, which is what my dehumidifier shows when full. We get the notification, and run down and empty. Especially helpful if you have multiple units like we do. This also controls your electric bill a bit better than having them either 1) Run at maximum 24/7 (mine consumes over 600w!) or 2) Trust the humidity sensor in the dehumidifier, which I've found is almost always incorrect compared to the humidity sensors I have separately.
    I can't tell you how happy this makes my wife, since before she'd go down to the basement to do laundry and always complain about it being musty... or if the dehumidifiers would run, we wouldn't know they were full, and we'd forget to empty them... or go downstairs and they weren't full, but we'd empty them anyway. Just wasn't a great situation. Now, as I told Brian, as my wife saw how beneficial that project was, she is happy to entertain other ones. We have a very basic setup, but she loves that we have smart switches/plugs!
    I hope this helps someone out there. Have a great day and enjoy!

      @@AutomateYourLife I have recently, unintentionally, ended up going full Hubitat from SmartThings. I've been able to do some insane things as a result. The Rule Engine is just insanely powerful. For example, I have my front porch lights set to come on a little after sunset, and shut off at midnight. No big deal, you can do that with SmartThings no problem! But, the fun part is what happens when somebody comes along during that time and flips the light switch...
      I can have it shut off the light for one minute (or any other set period of time) and then come back on. Or, I have have a series of flips of the switch (L, R, L, R,U,D,U,D,B,A, Select , Start) to do any number of things with the lights, and then return to the on position until midnight, or shut off all together. Add to that, simultaneous speaker announcements and it gets fun.
      My kids room, if they turn on the light after bedtime, it will stay on for 3 minutes, and their Google Mini will tell them that it will shut off in 3 minutes.
      My Ikea blinds work locally, without the Ikea hub. And the nuanced stuff that Hubitat allows me to do there is crazy.
      All of that without having to use WebCore! (But Hubitat supports that too so you can easily port your pistons)
      The ONLY thing I have found that I don't like about Hubitat so far is how it handles fans. There is a work around, but I don't like it. I also don't like how it passes it's scenes to Google Home as switches. I ended up making a room in Google Home called Hubitat for all those scense to go into.
      Anyways, I think you'll enjoy it more and more as it's unhinged power starts challenging your creativity. I can't wait to see what you end up with!

    My dad has an incredible smart home which is beyond the basic level of smart bulbs. using a fibaro system his whole house is wired up with lights on PR sensors, individual radiator control in every room etc. I could see if he would be interested in providing a tour of his home. Once he retires from his day to day job I believe he would like to start to help out others who want to create the same system in their home.

    I'm definitely down to show what I have been working on. Over 50 devices in my Home, Autolocking doors, automated lights, turned my Washer and Dryer Smart by using Webcore Pistons to send notifications when the washer or dryer is finished. Waiting for humidifier sensor to come but the goal is to make it so the exhaust fan in the bathroom auto turns on and off based off Humidity. I dont have a home automation channel but a gaming channel called Hybrid Mongoose with 5k subs, been working in IT for 10 years and I am far from done in my home. Definitely like to share :)

    If you really start to integrate Hubitat more into your system, I would highly recommend the community created app called Hubconnect. It essentially links Hubitat with smarthings, allowing you to run your automations in either device, and giving them access to devices they otherwise might not have access to. (Mostly giving Hubitat access to the SmartThings devices in order to automate in Hubitat)

    Lot's of really good idea's here. If anyone has any questions about my device (Air Quality,Temp, and Humility sensor), then please respond to this comment, or go to the board link. Also as an update have integrated this through thingspeak and webcore with smartthings so can turn my air purifier and humidifier on/off based on the readings from the sensor.

    We didn't do anything that wild we started in the solarium set it up so we could set up Christmas and all the holidays in around the fireplace in the solarium on the condo. And then I decided to build concrete planter boxes on the balcony we added smart lights which controlled by SmartThings and we added a drip water system and a and flowers and roses the lights come on at dusk and go off at dawn year round. We have different rocks and things to take place of the perennials Outdoors. We also decorated with Halloween Christmas and other items that can work with the SmartThings every year we shut off the drip system in the winter and put a covering on Works beautifully but after watching you you give me some cool ideas to add some more maybe. Are there any Smart sensors for sound? My application would be to create a routine to alert me when someone rings the door buzzer or a smoke or CO2 alarm goes off. Why spend lots of money on a smart smoke alarm if a listening device near a standard alarm could alert you? Sensor adjustments for sound level and/or frequency (Hz) would be a plus.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  Před 4 lety

      There are many examples of cameras that at this point can listen in and tell you if a smoke or CO alarm/detector is ringing. For example, Wyze has this feature on their cameras and Nest now offers it within their Nest Aware subscription service as well. Alexa Guard does, too. So maybe it's more in the direction of a Smart Camera or a Smart Speaker that you're after?

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  Před 4 lety

      Door buzzer is a little tougher, but I still get notifications on many cameras due to sounds like that. Also, a smart doorbell might really help you there.
      There's just not a really good, highly tuned, smart sound sensor that works in enough ways for your application. At least not that I've found. Perhaps a good question to ask at community.automatelife.net!

    So many cool things. And now I have to illuminate my outdoor table/firepit. Other than Philips Hue ($), what outdoor strip would you recommend? I have 2 that I had bought at Costco (3 really but one got stolen) but they don't sell them anymore. They've survived our winters so need another reliable brand.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  Před 4 lety

      For outdoors? I don't think there is one I would recommend. I mean, you could go really basic and maybe get some of the ones people use for Christmas lights outdoors, and then just use a better controller. I often see IR controllers and smart controllers available for those. There are lots on Amazon that you could power on with smart plugs and the like too.
      Amazing that they got stolen too...I'm really sorry to hear that.

    • @leogodreau9505
      @leogodreau9505 Před 4 lety

      @@AutomateYourLife Since they're outdoor and I'm leaving them all winter, I don't want to spend a fortune in case they don't survive.
      We will be replacing the fire table this weekend and I think the light under it will be really cool.
      I'll see what Amazon has available that's good for outdoor. I want to be able to do colour changes too.
      The one that was stolen I was having trouble connecting it to my Google Home app and it didn't turn off with the Goodnight routine so somebody did see it from the street and came and ripped it off the deck. I doubt the idiot will be able to use it anyway. I did catch him on camera but he had a hoodie on. I posted it on local neighbourhood watch FB page but nothing came of it. No big deal.

    Quick question. Do you know if Google is working on allowing a Chromecast ulra/HDMI to cast it's audio to a cast group? Basically allowing us to set the default audio from a Chromecast connected to a TV to a cast speaker group? I believe you can do that with the Amazon ecosystem. Figured you may know......

      Here's my feedback to Google:
      Google team. I am seeing that in the Amazon ecosystem we are able to send audio from a TV playing content from Amazon cube to an Echo speaker group, so effectively are able to create a home theater experience with the Echo speakers.
      Question: Is the Google team working on a similar option where one could cast the audio from a Chromecast that's streaming content on a TV to a Google cast speaker group? This would allow for a cost effective home theater experience and would add huge value to the Google smart home ecosystem!! Please consider doing that!!! I am sure this would be marketed by all the CZcamsrs and would influence people's buying decisions in favor of Google.
      Thanks
