That’s so kind of your professor to give us a mini lecture on Oxford bookbinding. Please thank him for us!
That professor teaching about bookbindings truly has a lovely aura about him.
I managed to get an Oxford offer and am frankly quite worried about going but these videos never fail to get me excited for it
Congratulations!! I'm sure you'll do amazing!
@lukas97671 I went to Oxford a very long time ago but I’m sure nothing has changed in some ways - EVERYONE always has imposter syndrome! You got a place so you are supposed to be there - enjoy!
Omg me too!! What course?

aw please tell your professor thank you for his little segment how interesting, so cute bless him. Book binding is so fun and therapeutic, I make my own sketchbooks out of my scrap paper sometimes :-)
That was so nice to hear your professor talk about book binding. It's lovely to hear people who have a passion for their niche. Thanks for sharing!
I also find January quite difficult mental health wise. But watching your videos always puts me in a positive space. Thanks for that! 😊
I've learned that instead of cramming meet ups with friends in before/during the holidays, it's easier to just make plans with them in January and February. That way, there is still a lot to look forward to during the time of the year that can be lonely and mentally challenging. My friends and I love it because it's a lot less stressful and we get to enjoy each other more.
Last time we got together, one of my friends was getting her instructor hours in by teaching a silks class (where you hang and do yoga from big silk cloth hung on the ceiling). Then we went to dinner at an authentic China restaurant (the same friend is Chinese) and we all had a wonderful time talking and catching up.
Also, this year, my husband and I left the Christmas lights on outside. This is the time of year we need the coziness, fun and cheerfulness. I think we take them down too early.
Also, I try to make things cozy as much as possible. And I really got into this when I started watching Ruby's videos back long before she went to Exeter.
I burn candles when I work, I put those ambience videos on for music. I make tea or cocoa, put on warm socks and get under a heated blanket...all while working.
omg the shock of her brushing her wet hair so hard, girl you will have no hair left at this rate!
Like nails on a blackboard or someone peeling a turnip with a blunt knife 😬
yet her hair is so thick and long? maybe thats her secret?
she just has a lot of hair from never cutting it, but you can tell it's damaged just by looking (though she's also said in videos it's damaged)@@maneskinnnnn7190
the sound made me shocked but her hair is so gorgeous
@@jakecavendish3470 is peeling a turnip with a blunt knife a typical expression or just something you hate? ngl im a little confused but i love that saying lol
Thank you to Professor Nicholas for sharing a segment on book binding. That was very interesting. You can tell he has years of knowledge about the subject just from watching that segment alone. That was very kind of him to share
please thank the professor for that short presentation, very informative :)
I love your videos, they are very calming and inspiring ❤
The part with the professor's explanation about the book-binding was unexpected, but so interesting, thank you so much for including it!
So glad to hear you love the Russian masterpiece that is Crime and Punishment. I read it when I was twelve in Russian and it never left me. Dostoevsky is my favourite writer of all times. Genius
Oh my goodness this video is packed with incredible content, useful hints , and amazing atmosphere and scenery. This video has become the highlight of my week! Thank you for taking time to share when your schedule is so busy already . Time is a precious resource but you made every second of this video count .
Plus I got to hear a professor from Oxford explain about book binding . Library's Habe always been magical places for me and this was definitely magical .
Loved seeing a bit of the bookbinding seminar -- your enthusiasm is contagious! 📚
Your videos inspires me so much! I've just passed all my exams and i want to say thank you. It may be strange but your channel feels like a comfort place to me and you like my friend who helps me a lot. Thank you for being so bright and kind. Thank you for being so supportive even if I'm so far away from you it feels like you're my old good friend.
Congratulations on passing all your exams 🎉 Your comment made me smile , it's so sweet . 💕🇨🇦
With presentations, and by extension teaching, you are essentially figuring out the rhythm of how you will present and what likely comes after each slide, so practice always works. Love this video.
Ruby, each time I watch a video of you studying in Oxford, I get so happy for you! You truly belong there, and it looks like you are thriving. I hope your mental health gets better and you have more good days than bad ones :)
When you were speaking about women in print it reminded me of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See. Women with bound feet in Hunan, China were not taught to write because it was men's work. They created their own language through embroidery and sent fans and other feminine crafts to communicate with one another. We must keep searching out the voices of women in history!
Ruby! Thank you so much for this video! I’m a bookbinding student currently (in the U.S.) so this was particularly fascinating. Hope all is well!
Every time I watch your videos I’m overwhelmed by how happy I am for you! All that hard work over the past 5+ years! Anytime you’re feeling down just remember there’s a whole bunch of people you don’t even know who are rooting for you!
Ruby, the joy you have for literature and Oxford is so lovely to see and warming. I don’t have the same passions as you but enjoy watching your vlogs. You are an inspiration. Keep up the good work 😊
I feel like I've learned so much from these couple of minutes about bookbinding, and it really motivates me to go do more research on that subject because it's soooo interesting ❤
Ruby posting frequently these days makes me so happy and motivated, I was just having a cup of tea when this video popped and guess what's better than a cup of tea n granger's vlog,,, enough to get motivated🦋
I find it very adorable that you take the time to share with us about book binding. I felt like a friend who you taught something valuable.
Thank you Ruby🤍 I loved everything about this video🥺 the fact that at the start you were not feeling that well but after the donuts (yum!), dinner with your friend and the amazing workshop seeing you a bit happier warmed my heart🫂 and thanks for the little passage from the professor, I'm always excited to learn something interesting, it feels refreshing💕
I absolutely love your videos, Ruby! I look forward to them every week! I find them very calming, relaxing, and interesting to watch. I love the fact that you talk about bits of your course in your videos or an abstract of a book/poem that you like. Your vlogs are wonderful to watch! I always learn something 😊
Just love the way Ruby's face lights up when she talks about her friends or things that interest her.
The bookbinding seminar looks amazing!!! I want to look into learning more about bookbinding. I first became intrigued by bookbinding from reading Kate Carlisle's cozy Bibliophile mysteries which focus on a San Francisco bookbinder. But from my work as a bookseller for ten years, I came to love books even more than I did as a literature student. Now I work at a public library part-time in addition to teaching online classes. But I would also love to learn bookbinding, too!! :D
Thanks for sharing the book binding lesson! It was, indeed, a very kind gesture of your teacher! Thank You from Brazil, Professor!! 🫶🏻💖📚😘
Really enjoyed the segment with Prof Pickwoad. So wonderful to learn more about this amazing craft. Thanks so much!
Ruby, I enjoy your videos so much! The bit about book-binding was fascinating and very clever of you to include. I bet we have Oxford-bound books like those here in Canada! Thanks for the lovely videos. They are a bright spot in my day. You're so unique!🥰
I'm visiting Oxford for a day this summer..I would love a video on your favorite bookstores or stationary store or maybe what not to miss! Love your content! 😊
Oh Ruby I love your videos so much 🥺
This was such a lovely vlog, Ruby! A big thank you to Professor Pickwoad for his segment on book-binding. Two and a half hours of that would be heaven. :)
Always waiting for your videos Ruby.... Take love ❤
Ruby I love your Oxford vlogs!❤
Great idea with a mini lecture from a professor! Your courses sound amazing!
Oh my gosh, the listening app! My fiance and I are both PhDs and we just geeked out about it. Thank you so much, you always find the most helpful tools!
Great video Ruby! I have been watching your videos for years and I kind of view you as my long-distance study bestie :D I only wish we shared the subject we study and then I could relate to your videos even more. Anyway, I am also very enthusiastic about English and your videos generally inspire me to study better, and in a more beautiful and organized manner!
I love your vids don’t stop ❤
I loved the video, the bookbinding segment was so interesting ❤
Hi, Ruby! I'm a brazilian phD student and I love your videos. You're such an inspiration! I'm stutdying right now while I watch you ♥
Book binding is something I’ve given very little thought to but what the Professor said is so interesting
i LOVE your vlogs, you are absolutely gorgeous Ruby. New favorite Channel!! :-)
It was so kind of him to film that little bit for you and us; I love book binding. 💛💚💜🤓
I've done the beginnings of research on some material culture topics, and objects can say so much if we learn their language. Thank you for bringing us along to that event.
I'm from Sweden but I love England, been over many times and your videos makes me less "homesick", I call it my second home. I lived and studied in London during 2014 and visited Oxford during that time. I would love to back, it's one of the most beautiful cities I've seen. I love these vlogs and they always makes me want to back to school and do further studies (I've got a bachelors degree in behavioral sience and sociology). I'm a fellow book enthusiast and you always make me wnat to learn more about literature and books, which is fantastic! ❤
Thank you for this vlog. I enjoy these videos so much.
1000% I would have gone to the bookbinding event too, if I could.
I study chemistry/science and once did a project on bookbinding where we got to study the materiality of 5 different old books from the university archive - rather than what was written in the books, we studied the binding, the glue, the paper, the ink. It was awesome!
Ruby my lovely, I’d recommend a tangle teaser especially for wet brushing! As someone with long hair I could never go back after having used one. It’s been my go to for over 10 years now ❤
That wet hair brushing traumatized me 😭😭😭😭
Same and I'm bald
The professor explaining about book binding was the best asmr ever.
crime and punishment is one of my favorites of all time as well. I read it I think twice and it is just such an amazing
Beautiful video, Ruby! I'm actually on a very similar academic path to yours, but while you are interested in the Early Modern period I am more into Medieval literature. I wonder if one day our paths will cross, maybe at a seminar or a conference! Your passion and love for literature are absolutely inspiring! Lots of love from the University of Padua, Italy!
You are amazing Ruby❤
You always motivate me for studying ❤❤❤❤❤
There should be more rubys in the world such a lovely young lady xx
That was really kind of the Professor to let you film a section for the bookbinding workshop, it was really interesting!
sorry to be inconvenient but i think you're breaking your hair with if you start brushing from the top (i think you did it right in the first half but i think i could hear your hair breaking in the second half), maybe you don't alway do this and you weren't paying attention bc of the video but just wanted to let you know just in case. great video btw
So exciting to get to see the explanation for book biding and how to identify the ones at Oxford.
You lead such a nice life Ruby, makes me hate myself a little for never finishing English lit tho
I live my eternal dream studying English Literature through you Ruby and I am crying every time you post your oxford diaries, I hope I could make some day as I am an author too and even in my 46 years old. 😢
Those donuts look yummy! 🤤 And I found it interesting what the man was saying about the books/parchment. Hope you're doing well Ruby! ☺
10:31 WARNING: Ruby destroying her hair 😅
Everyone! Silence! Ruby uploaded a new video!!!✨
Love your videos Ruby xxx
Great tip recording yourself for presentation prep ❤
Greetings from a new subscriber. Book binding is a wonderful craft. A book binder in the area where I live is keeping the craft alive by making notebooks, photo albums, ring binders etc.
Unfortunately due to my mental health I was in a mental health hospital and there was bookbinding one of our daily activities. I have learned how to bind books by hand. It is not hard at all, but you have to work very precise.
I hope you're doing better, wish you the best ❤
@@alicjas5472I’m doing way better now! Thanks❤
I love book binding! I took a workshop on how to do different styles of book binding which was so cool. I liked that professor of yours. :)
Oh that’s so cool! What book did you bind?
@@RubyGranger8 A story of mine. She taught me how to do a specific sewing method from China. 🙂
I spent a summer studying abroad at Oxford as an undergraduate, and Magdalen College was my favorite to walk around!! And New College. When you said you were reading a poem I thought you might recite “What the Bird Said Early in the Year” by CS Lewis which mentions Addison’s Walk in Magdalen. You should give it a read if you haven’t before!
The donuts look delish. Also, if you don't mind me suggesting - when you brush your hair, start from the very bottom of the length and slooooowly work your way. up. This will work through the tangles better and cause less damage than brushing from the middle (from a fellow longhaired person - I didn't learn this until I was much older!).
❤❤❤📖I love book binding!! Now I'm going to be on the hunt for potential oxford-bound books 😂
A picture of a medieval woman writing in the video led me to a search for the image, and I came across the poet Isabella Whitney. I researched her life and work and became a fan right away. Thank you for the details you show in your videos.
Book binding sounds fun. I can see you as an archivist, that would be interesting work. Those donuts looked good
I love Scriptum! Could have spent every penny I had in that shop. We stayed in Turl Street Mitre just a few doors down. Thanks for these videos. :) I absolutely adore Oxford.
Hi Ruby, have you ever tried using an Aquis towel or something similar? It’s a quick-drying towel that really gets the water out of your hair. I keep one in my swimming bag; it’s really invaluable. On another note, I think if I had ever gone to Oxford, I’d have flunked out because I would have spent all my time drinking tea, eating pastries, admiring architecture, and browsing bookshops. I would never have gotten any work done!
Thankyou for inspiring me with my study I’m in my last year of my masters degree and I’m 3 weeks ahead already. :-) ❤
Hi darling I'm so sorry your not feeling well your ideas and books are helping me lot plus Oxford is amazing I have passed my presentations because of your ideas thank you for that I'm now doing my mocks in English boy it hard work but will pass the real exam x
Saudações do Brasil, amo seus vídeos pois são inspiração ✨🤍🦋
Thanks for sharing!!!
10:49 go easy on your hair please what was that😭
😂 the ripping sound was traumatic
I wish I had a friend like ruby.
You’re reading all of the girlies I wrote about for my thesis and it’s making me soooo happy - Tyrwhit, Spectre 💕
And Lucy Hutchinson 🥰🥰🥰
Lovely,.as always x
Luv this💖 I too started reading “Crime and Punishment” thanks to your recommendation from an earlier vlog!
You inspire me so much💖📜🕯 Hugz from Oregon
omg crime and punishment!! i’m a big dostoyevsky fan, i’ve always wondered if you were into this work. i’m currently rereading it so good timing lol
This may sound odd but at @15:11 you did the cutest little nose scrunch lol 😅
Amo seus vídeos.
Rubyyy just a little tip, brush your hair from the bottom up and it will be so much easier and less damaging! X
I love this guuuuuurl

Hi! Good luck in your new semester!! ❤ I wanted to ask you how do you do your study timelapses? I have an Android phone and I tried an app but I don't really know the intervals to achieve something like your videos. Thanks !! 😊
Have you read the brothers karamazov? Another life changing classic!
I recently did a reading at uni on women writers and publishers during the Ming and Qing dynasties, it was super interesting! It was called "Ming and Qing anthologies of women's poetry and their selection strategies" by Kang-i Sun Chang. Totally recommend!
Hello, just so you are aware if you are not taking vitamin D you should be in Canada it is recommended 1000 but I have recently been told by a friend who is an ER nurse & her friend who is a doctor that we should be taking 3000 in Canada. So, I highly recommend taking more. I started at the beginning of this month when I found out and I have had one of the happiest Januarys ever. I bet if everyone who is up North more just ups their amount a bit more, they will have a better time dealing with the winter months. I hope this helps you. :)
I have those editions of Secret Garden and Anne of Green Gables - I love them!
Also, I love that you got to record a "mini-lesson" for us - you can tell he is passionate about binding!
What shampoo do you use Ruby? I know you’ve mentioned it before in another video but I can’t remember …
Ah I could have chosen a seminar on bookbinding back in uni but didn't (I instead took one that I ended up hating 😂), so this was very interesting!
You were fairly good in you pronunciation of Endimion = en'dim'ee'on (all soft vowels)
Yeah, i really waiting to your 1M 😁🎉🍕
Appreciate the professor sharing a bit of his knowledge with us via your vlog. So older book bindings are kind of a fingerprint for the book, to find out where it came from?
