I remember in Ratatouille the song plays twice. Once when Linguini and Remy's lives thrive off the restaurant's success and again at the end of the movie. It's almost as if the song is what holds the movie together. I feel that Ratatouille is underappreciated in this time and age. It should get more recognition nowadays.
Like the characters themselves i guess. One without the other is just a clumsy man, and the other a talented mouse but a mere mouse nonetheless
Technically it plays at the very beginning of the movie.

This song is still beautiful despite that. Nobody is dancing to it, your joke was unfunny and it made no sense.
The song isn't about hunger at all. Man you must have shallow taste in music.
I feel like this song talks about hunger both literally and metaphorically. That hunger to achieve something new and being tired of endless failures and being too scared to hope. But then still trying your best to achieve your dream. That is essentially an apt description of Remy's character arc in this movie. And according to me I see this song as something he wishes to tell his father.
Reading this comment makes more sense why this song came into my mind randomly... not only is it a soft, beautiful song but also a signal that things are finally going in the right direction in my life for once, actually.

some of the lyrics are wrong so let me give the real translation for you :)
0:40 "volant en chemin tout ce que je peux" actually means "stealing everything i can on the road"
1:07 "un voleur solitaire est triste à nourrir" the translation is right but the word "nourrir" is a word play (idk how to say this) between "nourrir" (feed) and "mourir" (die) so french people can hear "a lonely thief is sad to death"
1:08 the real lyrics are actually "ah, jeux si amer, je ne peux réussir" which means "this game is so bitter, i cannot succeed"
1:23 nothing is wrong here, i just wanted to add that the "stars" are a reference to les étoiles michelin, which are a reward to quality chefs / restaurants
1:53 "la fête" is not "the feast" but "the party" (but it's almost the same thing in this context)
1:58 "et sortez les bouteilles, finis les ennuis" means "take out the bottles, this is the end of troubles"
2:07 the actual lyrics are "je dresse la table de ma nouvelle vie", which means "i set the table of my new life"
thank you for reading :))
I just wanted to add that in the star race part, she don't say "on redira" she say "on me dira"
Thank you
isn't it "à un jeu si amer, je ne peux réussir" ?

For some reason, every time I listen to this song, it gives me strength. Truly beautiful and relatable as it talks about poverty, the struggle to come to terms with it, and accept the inevitable reality that it may be impossible to get away from. The tension of wanting to overcome poverty or hardship is communicated through the song, in fact, the pursuit of a better life, and the struggle to get away from it is celebrated in some way. I listen to this song almost every day as a reminder to keep struggling and find beauty in the struggle!

The dreams of the lovers are just like fine wine
They both can bring happiness and even sorrow
Weakened by hunger, I am unhappy
Stealing at the same time everything I can get
Because nothing in life is free
Hope is a fastly consumed meal
I am now used to skip meals
It is sad to feed a lonely thief
Between us, I am bitter, I want to suceed
Because nothing in life is free
Never will I be told again
That reaching the stars isn't made for me
Let me astonish you all and begin to soar
We will all have a treat soon
The party shall finally begiiiiiin
Aaaand take out the bottles, the troubles are over
I am setting the table of my new life
I am happy knowing this new destiny

@Phellype Miranda yess omgg german is sooo hard!!
In many ways, the work of a critic is easy. We risk very little, yet enjoy a position over those who offer up their work and their selves to our judgment. We thrive on negative criticism, which is fun to write and to read. But the bitter truth we critics must face is that, in the grand scheme of things, the average piece of junk is probably more meaningful than our criticism designating it so. But there are times when a critic truly risks something, and that is in the discovery and defense of the new. The world is often unkind to new talent, new creations. The new needs friends. Last night, I experienced something new, an extra-ordinary meal from a singularly unexpected source. To say that both the meal and its maker have challenged my preconceptions about fine cooking is a gross understatement. They have rocked me to my core. In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto: 'Anyone can cook.' But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere. It is difficult to imagine more humble origins than those of the genius now cooking at Gusteau's, who is, in this critic's opinion, nothing less than the finest chef in France. I will be returning to Gusteau's soon, hungry for more.
hands down my favorite scene in the movie.
Gives me chills.
Always brings tears to my eyes
I cried
and he got bashed for it and had his reputation went down. Now that's such a reality check.
Spoilers!
Nothing in life is free.
Because the rat is poor, hopeless and hungry under the sewers, doesn't mean he can't be a brilliant chef.
Everyone can cook.
Two corrections to the lyrics:
1:09 - it's supposed to be "À un jeu si amer, je n'peux réussir" which means "At a game so bitter, I can't succeed!"
1:18 - it's supposed to be "Jamais on ne me dira, que la course aux étoiles, ça n'est pas pour moi!" which means "They will never tell me, that the race to the stars, that it's not for me!"
These lyrics make a lot more sense imo. It's from the perspective of a lowly thief with big dreams and desires for a better life. At 1:18 she is singing about how those around her will never tell her that she can't make it to the "stars" anymore.
At 1:09 I hear « Ah, jeux si amers »
I actually see many other mistakes.
0:51 should be « L’espoir est un plat bien »
1:28 should be « Laissez-moi vous émerveiller »
1:52 should be « La fête va enfin commencer »
1:56 should be « Sortez les bouteilles » because I didn’t hear « et » but I could be wrong.
2:06 should be « de ma nouvelle vie »

French is so trippy because none of the word words are spelt how they’re pronounced-
Father Louis Willam Suga Adams the third because it’s not phonetic that’s why 🙄🙄 duh
Kiya Lee I’m sorry, but I have zero clue what phonetic means. I’m really not educated on French or language terms by any means. ://
Phonetics is just used to explain how the pronunciation and how you pronounce something is related to the way it's spelled. French isn't necessarily phonetic in the way certain languages like, my personal favorite, Russian are in the sense that their spelling of words has not changed much but the way they pronounce those words has changed so just because something is spelled a certain way it can be pronounced completely differently because it's an old word in the language making it not phonetic while in Russian it's very phonetic in the sense that for the most part words are said how they are spelt with very little exceptions. I know that was long but this is a pretty complex topic I highly suggest looking into it of you have any interest and I hope this might've helped you understand what the other person who replied was trying to say even though they were pretty rude about it.
Ohhh okay! Thank you, that does help a lot actually. Cool to know :33
And the words are so long lmao😂😂 where in my language you'd say: wat doe je? The French are just like: *_Que faites-vous?_*

Alright... let me break it down to tell my interpretation. The song tells two stories, the two stories of both of the protagonists of the movie. And it does it at the same time.
I utilized an improved and well regarded translation by Ron the Ron in the comment section for my interpretation (Though I emphatically disagree with their interpretation), I have faith you can find it if you care to.
The movie is both about a rat trying to succeed to stave off hunger, AND about an anxious, socially awkward human who eventually finds love. Everyone seems to be disregarding the first two lines of this song (And disregarding Linguine's character development) in their interpretations as not many have included it in their analysis, "The dreams of lovers are like good wine, they give either joy or sadness". This is a song about the hope of love and success, the potential of finding that "good wine" and about thriving. "Get the bottles, no more troubles" alludes to this first line. Hunger is a metaphor for lack of love, but also represents actual hunger in terms of Remmy.
"A thief, lonely is sad to feed", The thief, being Remmy, lonely being Linguine; both were Kafkaesque in the beginning.
Linguine never becomes a great chef, but he finds love, and Remmy becomes a great chef and no longer goes hungry.
I could say more, but I think when you think of the song in terms of this it becomes rather apparent. Obviously, any art is subject to the interpretation of the beholder, however, I think given the context, AKA, the movie the song is in and as far as I can tell, was created explicitly for... it seems to me this is the intended interpretation.

Le Festin, or The Feast, is a song dedicated to life, more specifically, Remy's life. But it can apply to all lives universally; life at the start is not set in stone, there are happy moments and sad ones. And we dream of finding happy ones all the time, we use anything necessary, we lie, we cheat, we steal.
This was what Remy's life, as a rat, was supposed to be, but he found heaven in cooking, it was his redemption, his dream, and he'd do anything for it, puppeteer a sort of lame human being even, but I digress.
But as said in the song, "Nothing in life is free." So our past actions are always paid in the future, we are always haunted by it, and it eventually came to Remy, Gusteau's almost closed down due to his actions. To redeem himself, he keeps chasing his dreams, now with the help of his once chastised family, he eventually reaches it, but not in the way he expects. Life is the same, we chase our dreams, hoping to redeem ourselves, but our dreams are veiled in the stars, making them difficult to reach, but that's alright, as said by Ego, "Not everyone can be a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere". We tried, and that's enough. And once the price is paid, life is the a feast worth enjoying.
Hope, the main dish, is eaten right away, but that doesn't matter, for once we achieve our dreams, the troubles won't matter, we'll keep on living, enjoying the feast as we go, good times and bad times ahead, we take it all on, bit by bit, bite by bite.
I love this song, it fills me with so much nostalgia, anyways thanks for reading this far, and I hope you keep enjoying the feast of life.

Last year, I finally got to see my dream accomplished: I got the oportunity to go to Paris, live and study there.
After I finished my final year exams and succeeded, I did my VISA to be able to live in the most beautiful city in the world.
Even though I was planning to finish my studies in Paris, I unfortunately have to go back to my homeland this year because of personal issues.
Overall, I have spent one year in Paris, one amazing year. While I discovered the down sides of this city, I got to live all the beautiful things Paris has to offer.
One memory I will not forget are the moments when I got back to my apartment, exhausted after a long day at school or a bit drunk from the party I went to, put this song and smoked a cigarette thinking about how beautiful Paris is.
If you ever get the chance to live there and speak french fluently, don't hesitate.
Merci Paris
