  • “The idea that swimming even further to the right would be a vote winner is completely deranged and I think most people would agree with that.”
    The Conservatives need to reclaim the centre ground to have a chance of returning to government, agree Anthony Seldon and Flic Everett.

    The Tories also need to accept its *not* Sunak. It’s all of them. 14 years in power, and everything is objectively worse. Workers are poorer due to wage stagnation not keeping up with inflation. Schools have been underfunded to the point there’s kids who never stood a chance. The NHS is on its knees due to ideology driven chronic under funding. Though I voted Remain, I’m not so much upset that Brexit went ahead in the end. I am upset the architects of it have done so in seemingly the most incompetent way possible. And all they’ve done is allow the headbangers and swivel eyed, detached from reality nutters in their party call the shots.
    Everything they’ve touched, they’ve broken. Sometimes through malice, sometimes through incompetence. And in the case of Johnson and Truss? Malicious incompetence.
    We’re had enough. They’ve had power for far too long, and we need a change.

    How do you know if your voters stayed at home? Maybe most of them switched to Labour and Labour voters stayed at home? The thing is you can’t tell and it’s bound to be a mixture of all combinations.

    • @georgesdelatour
      @georgesdelatour Před měsícem

      The Labour vote was down. They won seats this time with fewer votes than they lost last time. So some element of the Labour coalition is staying away; probably Corbyn supporters and Muslims. I think the simplest explanation for the Conservative collapse is Johnson era Conservative voters staying home. Is it possible that Johnson Conservatives are now voting for Starmer, but they’re being more than offset by disillusioned Blairites staying home? Unlikely, because, in that case, you’d see a different distribution of seats won and lost.

      Very complicated reasoning from a set of elections where low turnout is to be expected and is usually dictated by the weather as much as anything else.
      Where I was, turnout was no different to the last decade - no evidence anyone stayed at home - the Tories have lost significant vote share over the last 3 years, but those votes are still being cast, just for different parties.
      This was a very tactical election. Which meant instead of tories just about clinging on to seats because of a divided opposition vote - the got wiped out.
      I believe there were a couple reform candidates standing but they played no meaningful role in the Tory disaster.

      I don't see any clear trend of 2019 Conservative voters moving to Labour. They're staying at home. They're saying to the Conservatives, "I prefer to be ruled by my enemies rather than by you".

    If we had a properly democratic system most of our governments would be coalitions and we would avoid the smug incompetence we suffer from at the moment. Get rid of FPTP and you get rid of the illogicality of tactical voting, and you ensure that every political tendency is heard. After the events of 2015-2024 we should never again hear the old argument that 'we need strong government'.

Labour offers public ownership of rail, cheaper energy bills with a UK energy company & a Real Living Wage. It's time to invest in Britain.

    We’ve not had a proper conservative government since Cameron left. May was a socialist, Sunak is a big state, high tax, hi regulation fiscal Brownite, and BoJo was a centrist who made it up as he went along. The exact reason the Tories are a hot mess now is because they’re trying to be a social progressive party rather than a right wing Conservative party 🤷‍♂️
