By honoring those have gone before, this program celebrates life itself.
Travel along with Minnesota historian Doug Ohman as he explores the fascinating world of Cemeteries. Doug will highlight Minnesotans that have a passion for these sacred grounds.

Durig the high of the Covid pandemic. I visited cemeteries of my desisted relatives. Packed a picnic lunch and rode my motorcycle. I could not visit with the living, so I chose to have lunch with the dead. It was peaceful eating alone in a cemetery. After a few trips I started to bring a brush to clean dirt off head stones..
This video is a Minnesota treasure and a wealth of knowledge. I'm glad I stumbled upon it.

I have a relative that first fought for South (NC)....released because of 'yellow jack' illness...moved to MN then fought for North in substitute for his brother that just was married...Tom Fallen.
We watched this episode and we’re very surprised to not see any visitation of cemeteries in central, western or northern Minnesota. We do exist in large numbers and have stories to tell. Come visit the real Minnesota!
It is a disgusting misfortune that Minnesota history cannot be told in it's entirety because the story teller's refuse to venture far from the Minneapolis/ St. Paul skyline.

I saw the bill of sale for several plots in in Calvary Cemetery in St. Paul, in 1871-1893 my 2x great grandfather bought the first of 7 graves, $13.50 and $15.00 and children were added at $4.00 and $5.00, a total of 7 family graves.
Oakland Cemetery, (Ramsey County), founded in 1853, two years before Minnesotan became a state, is just down the street here; the final resting place of Alexander Ramsey and Henry Sibley. One was the first Territorial Governor and the other was the first State Governor.They are buried near the inside the original main entry, beneath huge headstone monuments, allegedly did not like each other, and are within fifteen feet of each other…
This area having been a railroad-rich area once upon a time, Oakland has a section with old, flat markers of Chinese people; reportedly railroad workers.
As I recall, there is a dedicated old firefighters area.
Near Sycamore and Jackson a lot of Hmong people are now being buried; their markers largely beautiful black marble and often with engraved images. History in the making yet…
One old monument from way back when denotes the death of a young child; engraved, “Our Little Frank,” and the fact that he lived less than two years…. Can you imagine the grief??
Decades ago one of two sisters who owned a local flower shop was murdered alongside their flower delivery man. She is buried in Oakwood Cemetery, only blocks from where she happily toiled and tragically lost her life…
Much, much room left at Oakland Cemetery, unlike Pioneer Cemetery. Both hold Civil War soldiers…
Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, holds the remains of former Minneapolis Mayor, U.S. Senator, Vice President and Presidential candidate Hubert Humphrey. Former U.S. Senator Paul Wellstone and his beloved wife Sheila are buried in Lakewood Cemetery.

you missed saint pauls oldest cemetary where the pioneer business people and politicians are. they have a fascinating firemmen monument.

I love walking cemeteries but looking for a cousin who lived in Minnesota but can't find stone or death certificate. Find in state 1905 census but not the 1910.

At what point do we remove something like the soliders/pioneers cemetery so its land can be used by new generations. It's not beautiful and its rarely open to the public.
I saw a herd of deer in there a couple of weeks ago. It does always seem locked.
@@sondragramse1770 they're always there. There are a few babies and buck as well right now. It's a mostly safe space for them. I have heard of one getting hung by the metal spikes on top of the fence though.
