I did the $55k truck purchase. I sold it. I got a base model 2021 Mazda 3 and I am thoroughly pleased. Literally, no one needs a car more than $20k brand new.
1st time buyer mistake. I did the same as well coincidentally going on 5 years ago in summer 2016. I Lost my interest in cars as I was in school and jumping into my career. Went to my first car show with friends, found out that Skyline GTRs are legal and literally bought the first one i can find ( I didn't even know how to drive a manual , my friend had to drive it home). A clapped out overpriced white one for 18k ( In retrospect for 18k back then, Skyline GTRs should be in better condition) . It was in bad condition despite having some fun road trips in it. I sunk in 3k on buying replacement parts to get it back on the road. Luckily i only had to spend 600$ at my friends shop. Starting in 2017, Now doing actual research on the vehicle, finding out all of this was a money pit. I put it up for sale. Me loving Gran Turismo and since this is my dream car I will get another one but this time do it right and not buy a stateside Skyline. I discovered an exporter in Nagoya Japan who does special orders , have minor work done to it , parts i had them order/ parts I had shipped to them and have it painted before being shipped to the states. I sold the white 32 GTR for way less then i paid for and sunk in at 12k, 6k less than I paid for :( . But months later in August 2017 when the new refreshed one arrived at the ports, I been stress free since. I put in some money in modifications but overall Ive literally spent nothing since it landed besides regular maintenance. Some times you gotta take a L to learn and get better in life. Especially when it comes to cars and purchasing them.
I did something similar with my first car but not nearly to the degree $$ wise in which you did, however my second car was also a basket case too. So much money and time, tons of set backs that I didn't need that prevented me from jumpstarting my life in a correct way. I know its hard for young guys to face the reality of buying a 'boring' car, but its worth it. If you're living independently and need reliable transportation, buy cheap and reliable, it will allow you to get to a point of buying a good, fun car, later on. Also, A friend of mine went out and bought a newer car when he couldn't really afford it, insane interest rate + ins, and I watched it bite him for the entire 5-6 year loan until he totaled it, and before he totaled it, the transmission was on its way out. I think people get this confused sometimes too. Cheap + Reliable isn't always boring. I always tout old Nissan and old Infiniti (Pre 2003-2006ish) because they're tons of fun and pretty reliable, they'll outrun most of anything in the price range, and they come without the added rice potential of getting a terrible car from say, a Honda, where some high-school kids DIY'd everything.
I love cars but yea that's true the car community of this generation is boojie!!! For example if there driving a Camaro zl1 or Dodge hellcat or anything in upper price range and upper horsepower they will somewhat look down at cheaper vehicles or vehicles with less horsepower
This man preaches truth! Back when I finished college I wanted to buy a 7th Gen stingray, but I just kept pushing it off and saving money. Now I'm on my way to buying my second house making over 100k a yr through investments, which now I can finally say I can afford my dream car. Financial stability 1st, then expensive hobbies
I learned my lesson in 2018 when I found myself in 48k in car debt lol, I started watching Dave Ramsey and now my only debt is my house, no more credit cards, car loans or student loans. Currently trying to pay off the house aswell lol 😎
Ramsey is great for the everyday working blue collar person. However, if you want to achieve real success, Ramsey will not guide you correctly. You shouldn't fear debt. Billionaires have billions in debt. You don't grow wealth by being afraid to take risk. Smart risk is one of the best ways to advance in life. You have to get comfortable with debt to succeed in most area's. It is what it is. Debt is a tool to gain wealth, when used improperly however, as a tool to NOT gain wealth, its useless, and that applies for most regular people.
Most hype based young ones are, although you can fund good ones. They usually have older dudes that get it. I don't judge based off of hp and you shouldn't. Judge what someone managed to get for the lowest cost. I respect the guy that got a 6 year old rt charger for 12000 that was worth 22000 alot more then someone who spends 1000 a month on a lease.
My definition of a car person is someone that doesn't hate on others for their choices of a car. Going through the automotive industry taught me a lot about some people.
This is why I’ll more than likely never buy a new car. All of my cars I ever buy will be used because you can still get extremely cool cars for cheap prices and modify them to make them way faster than newer cars.

@Beau 300 miles in a Model X from Tesla’s fastest charger costs $25 as opposed to about $60 for the same range for a luxury SUV in California. I believe the battery replacement is covered for 8 years. If you buy a very early production model, then costs will be high as it was for the Model S guy. But the Model 3 and Y are much simpler cars with lass costs spent for repairs. Features like regenerative breaking make it so you rarely have to change your brakes and the lack of maintenance outside of the AC also reduce repair costs
@Beau most people dont use fast charge tesla stations, its easier and much more cost effective to charge at home overnight for about 9 cent a kw, which translates to about 3 cents a mile, or about a dollar for 30 miles of range, as opposed to current gas prices which give you about 30 miles of range for one gallon, $3.50 a gallon on average, my tesla saves me about 2000 a year on gas.
@Beau I have, electric cars aren’t what they used to be. The next coming years the technology of electric cars will surpass the efficiency and practicality of conventional fuel vehicles. Not saying I don’t enjoy fuel powered vehicles but the way the industry is heading is EV. R&D is going into EV at a lot of auto manufacturers now aside from Tesla.

House loans are, atleast here in Germany (I cant speak for the US because I dont know the laws) a VERY big money trap which can put you in huge debt. The sidewalk needs to berenwed? Guess what, now you gotta chip in a sh*t ton of money. You didnt plan in enough money for enterior repairation. Now you sit on another loan. House loans are for decades, a car loan not. Even if you made a mistake, you will manage 5-8 years. Your house hase unforseen problems? Guess now you have a problem for the next 30 years. The world isnt black and white. Apply to your own life and dont blindly follow a statement made buy a dude that made millions. Just my 2 cents tho, after finishing school and earning my own money and managing savings.
I wanna say, I understand you, and congratulations on finally getting your debts turned around. I’m in the same position just not hefty like that. I bought a bmw that I ended up hating, and still own, parts, gas, and insurance kill. Finding out first hand was the best experience especially because I only paid 3k, and at the time I only had 800$. It took me about 9 months to finally get it paid off. 9 months without saving a dollar, stress, and discomfort... I learned a valuable lesson, and I’m glad we’ve got people like you to spread stories like this to save others from digging their own grave. Yes you’re getting paid, but are you saving? Spending doesn’t feel as good as holding a lot of money with endless possibilities.
Honestly, this is a big reason I don’t show myself too much within the car community. There are too many elitists, and more people that want to put you down than be happy for what you personally enjoy. There is no winning, as whatever you have, they always will criticize you for why you don’t have something more powerful/expensive. I’d likely be in a pillory if I put myself out there with an I4 Kia Stinger, especially since it is an automatic, but I just keep to myself and enjoy what I have. They can keep all of the negativity to themselves, I’m good. I’m glad you got out of your hole, it is a truly liberating feeling when you can step back and focus on what makes you happy and not others.

Graduated college 2019, and my first ever car i got when i got my first job a few months after graduating was a 2019 civic sport. Beautiful car and low monthly payments! Refinanced a year later and cut my finance in half! Its nice not being “car poor”
Thankfully I'm more into the VIP cars so I got a 2005 LS 430 in keeping forever. Paid off and reliable. I get haters to but they ain't paying my bills.
Yeah man, I was a young, lonely kid with no family around me. Sought validation through others. Been nearly 4 years since and I've done a tremendous amount of self-reflecting. Needless to say, it won't happen again. Thanks for the comment!
I told my son- The newer, sportier cars may look nice. They might even BE nice but you have to pay more to own , maintain, and insure. The maintenance is the killer with any car. It doesn't even have to be a lemon, just routine maintenance brushes, water pump, oil changes. These are costs to factor in.
Interesting... I’m currently in a similar situation. I was 18 when I financed my first car. Did it for 3 years and it was ass. I hated paying for it, I always felt I could be doing so much more than a car payment. Once I payed it off I stayed about a year without a car payment and it was GREAT. Got to save money and go on more vacations. Eventually, I needed a new car since mine had ran it’s course and was costing to much to repair. I purchased an 2018 camaro 1LT V6, with the RS pkg and technology Pkg. I’ve had it for 5 months now, but I’m considering to trade it in for a 9k GTI. Reason why, bc I want to be able to do more with my money. I’m 24 , but I realized that buying a home and getting married is probably a more better move than to have a nice car. Also, the best tip I got was “save your money”. I think I will do it. Wish me luck!
This. This is why I ONLY pay cash for cars. Never finance things that go down in value. Never ever ever ever. Interest is more fun to earn, than to pay. ;)
@@navykeef I have credit cards i pay off every month and a credit score in the 700's. I drive a 2014 mazda 3, 80k miles. The most fun car to drive? Hell No. it is at least a manual and fun enough on back streets, but you know whats more fun? Living on only %50 of my income. I can easily stack cash to buy the next car which will be more fun. I don't do debt for anything but a house, and even then I would put a %50 down payment, and pay it off early. I would rather have the extra cash to invest and build long term wealth.
I've learned from owning a Tesla that you will always run into people wanting to verbally stab you for the expensive things you own. Me being 26 caused people to assume that my parents bought it for me; if they didn't assume it was bought for me, then they assume I am paying $500 to $600 a month for it. Lots of people would aggressively blab misinformation about electric cars and tell me how stupid I am for thinking it helps the environment. Other people driving trucks would suddenly become more aggressive on the road. People and cars are just toxic. It is pretty much impossible for everyone to respect other's car buying decisions. For those interested in buying a "dream car," I recommend saving enough money for a 50% down payment. If you can afford to save that much for a car, you can afford to own the car. Plus it keeps you from going underwater if you suddenly sell or crash the car.
This is great self reflection. Sounds like the problem wasn't the cars but instead some insecurity in what others think. Glad you are growing as a person and comfortable sharing the story. Thank you!
That's fine and dandy and all... Until you realize the reason you got that car so cheap is because the transmissions can't make it 120k Miles, the engine can't make it much farther, and the electrical was done so inefficiently, you'd be lucky to not go through a car battery once a year.
Surprisingly similar path. Asian, Modded Eco boost S550 Mustang to MK7.5 GTI. Even tho people hate on the non V8 Stang, we had some sweet memories. But hey, we all learn from our mistakes, make them a part of our life path and never make the same mistake ever again.

Don't believe the myth that a high mileage car will cost a lot in maintenance. Buy a good quality car brand (e.g. a German car) with a higher mileage. The car will have already depreciated a ton, so for the few years you own it, if you add the small depreciation cost to the maintenance cost, it'll likely work out at something like $100/month, compared to getting a finance deal from a dealership which would cost at least 3x that for a very basic car
First mistake: buying new car from the dealership which will lose a couple thousand dollar value the moment you purchase it. Buy used so you buy the car at its depreciated value.
Any car after 5 years old from Manufacture date is the way to go. The price will drop (depreciate) significantly and you can still find a car with low mileage.
I drive a 2008 Ford Fusion I purchased 2 years ago for $3000 and have had 0 issues with it. It's got 152,000 miles now, but it runs great and I take care of it. @@JayAR_YT I just wanted to say that renting is not a waste. Don't listen to the financial experts. Home ownership is extremely expensive. You got repairs, property taxes, and and home insurance costs ten times more than rental insurance. Plus maintaining a lawn will steal your time. I've been a home owner for just over six years, and for me, it's been an expensive mistake. I plan to sell this year and go back to renting.

I’m willing to get a Tesla. And Ramen be hittin different, especially if it was a childhood friend.
Owning a Tesla would make sense financially on fuel. Especially the new model 3 for being such a good price

I don't do debt for anything but a house, and even then I would put a %50 down payment, and pay it off early.
I would rather have the extra cash to invest and build long term wealth.
To think you could’ve just saved 5k back then and bought a used v8 mustang and been satisfied for these years.
Fr!
No he wouldn't be satisfied cuz people would still have made fun of him for having a gt
@@AGNDAHOUSE people will make fun of him for having any mustang model.
@@vargasaidan7366 People will make fun of you for owning a car no matter how unique or powerful it is.
@@AGNDAHOUSE What's wrong with he GT. Planning on seeing one tommorrow.
Thank you!
you cared too much about other peoples opinions and found yourself in debt over it. good thing you got over it man
I’m in college and just bought a 2017 Ford Fusion for $9,500
Got ripped off
@@AngelReviews you don’t need to be rude lmao chances are he doesn’t have good credit and it’s sub 10k so who really cares?
That’s actually not a bad price what are the miles during purchase
That's fine and dandy and all...
Until you realize the reason you got that car so cheap is because the transmissions can't make it 120k Miles, the engine can't make it much farther, and the electrical was done so inefficiently, you'd be lucky to not go through a car battery once a year.
also discontinued so parts will get pricier over time
reminds me of my BMW when I was a young kid and damn maintenance bills were expensive for sure lol
BMWs are no joke, I’ve owned 2. First was a financial nightmare. 2nd was a much better choice.
I come back to this video every month to stop myself from buying my dream car too early in life. Car debt is no joke, and the unfortunate truth is that being young with few responsibilities is the best time to build wealth. Thank you for sharing!
When you drive around look around, not that many people are even driving a "new" car.
Moral of the story: Don’t buy a V6 mustang
Sti isn’t beating a tuned cyclone let alone a boosted one on a stock block 630 wheel. More than what a subi can say and good luck pushing that power on stock internals lmao.
@@ValentinnPR Hey guys look it’s a V6 owner trying to justify buying a V6 by saying IF it was boosted he could beat a 4 cylinder boosted car! 😱
Omni: buys V6 Mustang
Bladed: buys Mustang California Special
Aren’t they brothers?

another pro tip: pay extra on loans to pay more towards principle so you don't pay as much for the final total.
A little too new for my own taste. I like older cars more than new.
Any car after 5 years old from Manufacture date is the way to go. The price will drop (depreciate) significantly and you can still find a car with low mileage.
Thats why the prius gang is the best group of car owners
What ??? Huh ???
I was surprised when you said “another Asian”. Didn’t even know dude!
I drive a 2008 Ford Fusion I purchased 2 years ago for $3000 and have had 0 issues with it. It's got 152,000 miles now, but it runs great and I take care of it. I want to get a BMW 335i for under 10k with reasonable mileage as those cars are pretty good value for the money (although maintenance is a little more involved). This video is exactly why I'm still driving a Ford fusion as a car guy; it's very comfortable to drive and it just simply works. I'm 20 and want to move out and get a degree, I'm trying to hold off on the BMW dream until I'm in a better spot to do so. I appreciate hearing your car story, glad you got out of that mess alive!
29,000 for a new mustang with 0% APR would be a miracle now a days lol.
