hermansegal, I don't think you have to be observant "to understand the secret of Shabbos" as long as the family/background/city you come from was observant. Just as you may understand, for example, that adultery is wrong but still cannot overcome the temptation... The warmth, heart and soul that you feel in Pinchik's pieces are almost certainly because of his background. I have never heard a gentile sing that touching and hearty that you feel as if a knife went through your heart.
@nigunman The selection begins "Umiphei hataeinu galinu me-artzeinu v'nitrahaknu me-al adamteinu" (Because of our sins we were exiled from our land and taken far from our soil). The repetition of words is part of that cantorial style. Personally, i don't like it.
