You’re right. The issue was distribution, funding and promotion. Sure, an NY artist could get 100k in NY. An LA artist can do the same in LA. But what if someone wanted to push their records across state lines? More importantly, who would be able to market those artists once they made it across state lines? This is the vision that record labels sell. And when an artist is down bad, they may go this route. There are very few artists that have been able to go the independent route and become successful doing it. At the time, if your dreams were bigger than the trunk of your car this was the way out.
