j-hope composed* and co-wrote this song along with rm, suga and jimin. funniest part, he accidentally spoiled it in a live before we even knew the BE album was coming out. he was working in the studio and the song playing in his headphones was so loud everyone in the stream could hear it. only after it was released did people realize where it was from. the layering in this song (especially the bridge and outro) is INSANE. each time i listen to it i find something new to amaze over in the background.

I have a question. So many people say J-Hope produced this song but on the album credits Brasstracks is listed as the only producer. This happens on a lot of BTS songs where people say members of BTS produced the song when they aren't listed on the credits. I'm not discrediting them as producers, but I also think the producers who BTS work with also deserve the credit too.

This track points out how much we’re overworked - not simply by our jobs, but by ourselves. BTS pinpoint that feeling of never quite being able to turn off your brain. “Errday do ma thang, damn if I fail,” J-Hope raps. “I keep growling, I tap the rotten rope / I feel unsettled, this is a disease / Physical things are a stun given to me by my career.” RM, king of bilingual wordplay, hits us with a particularly good one here: The word for “work” in Korean, 일, sounds like the English word “ill.” “My heart needs a holiday too,” he raps. “Gosh, just think of work as work / I’m ill, yeah, I’m work itself / That friend called ‘rest’, oh I never liked him. / How much do you have to earn to be happy?”

The Korean name of this song directly translates to “disease”, but for the English title it has a dash ( - ), making it also mean “uneasiness” or “uncomfortableness”. Dis-ease is one track from their “BE” album which talks about their experiences during the pandemic. A mix of sadness and hope. Another *chef's kiss* 😚🤌 Can't wait for album reactions!!

I love Dis-ease. It J-Hope’s baby. When you listen to it, you get surprised by where it takes you because it sounds like one way then it moves into another way and then takes you back. I like the retro feel of the way each of the rap line’s verses progress. My favorite part is the bridge and I was waiting for that part to see if you felt elated and surprised by it like I was at first listen, Jimin ended up coming up with the melody of that part on the spot when he ad libbed during… a recording session I think (?). Anyway, a cool song from the BE album which released November 2020 and was written and produced by the guys during the pandemic to express their own hard times with us which kind of makes us feel not alone and encourage us during the tough times. That album is kinda like therapy during the pandemic.

bts' lyricism is a very profound part of their work and i think knowing the lyrics makes everyone appreciate the songs even more, but nothing wrong with just grooving to them if thats what youre most into of course!! (however, i hope you don’t worry abt the length of the vid - i’m sure absolutely no one will mind you going through the songs more than once if u want to catch it all)
Dis-ease is a play on disease: as in we/society are sick from overworking "im ill, im work itself" and dis-ease: as in uncomfortable, with not being able to work because of the pandemic (and they worked tirelessly anyway, a testament to the very message of the song)

If I'm not mistaken, the BE album is made up mostly of songs that the guys were already working on individually. When they decided to do BE because their tour was canceled due to Covid, they pooled their songs together and turned them into group songs. At least I think that's what I remember hearing them say at some point. If I'm wrong, somebody please correct me. The version of Dis-ease that Hoseok spoiled on his vlive was the solo version he was working on so it sounds different. He had his headphones on and thought the sound was only coming through them, but we could hear it, too. Someone had to come and tell him he was already broadcasting his song. Hobi's "Oh. Sh*t." was priceless. Here is a link to a clip of the leak. czcams.com/video/KJ59TDY-QoQ/video.html

I find it absolutely amazing how It took JIMIN less the 5 minutes to write the bridge after PDogg BigHit's in-house producer requested JIMIN to do so, since when JIMIN went in to the studio since there was no melody at that' point for the bridge, he just started humming and the legendary genius producer, Pdogg liked so much what he heard requested JIMIN write the bridge part. To me it's really the highlight of the song and brings it to another level, along with Jimin's amazing vocals. Hobi definitely chose the right beat to use from Dissstrack who also had a hand in producing, as well. Hobi's songs are always equally amazing. Hope you guys get to listen more to JHope's mixtape, but also a must are both if RMs, as well as Suga's (Agust'D).

So a thing about the kpop industry is constand work... endless practice, performances daily, every aspect of your life you need to be switched on for cameras, society is watching you to analyze your every move.
BTS is currently on their second official break from the industry since their debut. When they made the BE album they only had one official break in 7 years. So during the pandemic, a time when everyone was told to stay home don't go to work, BTS had a chance to just sit down and take it easy for once.
Not these guys, they wanted to get back into the studio, back on the stage.
Dis-ease was about the uneasiness of not working, but is that a disease itself?
There was a music critic, from Rollong stone I think, who had the nerve to put this song on his 5 worst songs of 2020. He said it was because it didn't fit the theme of BE which started out very somber, he clearly didn't check the lyrics or understand how BE was arranged together.

  • @Ross_P

You know, this is what happens with BTS: you kinda don't want to start listening to them because you think the language barrier would be too much, and then you start listening to them and are super attached to the lyrics, because you're just used to understand everything in songs (and this is probably why MCA isn't super fond of the current music, because - with few exceptions like Taylor swift i.e. - most of our daily commercial music is based on sh*t lyrics, let's be real).
But then you get their vibes, you get into their sounds, and you just *know* the lyrics are clever and damn good anyway, that you start paying less and less attention to it - to the point of not caring much about the lyrics, not because you don't like it or you're not interested, but simply because the songs are so damn good that they could be talking about nothing and you'd still love them. And the cherry on top is that their lyrics are never banal or gross, but always so well thought and even better expressed! :)

They made this album when the pandemic hit and their tour got canceled.

Yaay~ dis-ease~ this song was produced by JHope, so it's only natural that we lost in the groove haha.. this song will always be in my morning energizer playlist. it's okay, you can read the lyrics later to understand more about their songs, and many army will gladly give you a summary of the song :)
but if I can suggest something, please avoid lyrics translation by Jaeguchi or Lemoring, because they often translate fast but not really accurate in translating, so it can be misleading sometimes.. Some of more accurate lyrics are by doolsetbangtan or zaty farhani. thank you again for listening to them~!

some similar sounding songs to this are other songs in BE album such as stay, telepathy & fly to my room, as well as suga’s moonlight, jhope’s just dance (and his entire hopeworld mixtape tbh), and a brand new day which is a collab with zara larsson.

It's disease like a illness/sickness and dis-ease like uneasiness/not comfortable. It's a play on words talking about how they aren't at ease and how they are sick from working so hard. "Ill" in English means to be sick 🤒 and it has the same pronunciation as "일" which means work in Korean🗄️.

Suga once described J-Hope as the group’s vitamin. This song is just one of the examples why. It’s such a Hobi style track. It lifts you up immediately. His album and his other tracks are just signature of his nature. When you listen to his album you will discover just how good of a vocalist he is too. When he hits the lover registers his voice gets this vibrating quality that literally gives you chills. There is a quiz on one of CZcams channels titled “guess who’s singing “ and around 99% people make a mistake guessing that it’s JK singing acapella when in reality it’s J-Hope.

it seems that you guys really love bts. dis - ease is a play on the word disease. the lyrics are about how uncomfortable they are with the situation of the pandemic. as entertainers they are effected in two ways, dis - ease because of the disease. this song is from their album 'be', all of the songs on this album are about their personal feelings during / because of the pandemic. i purple you.

This entire album was wonderful. They did this album because they had all had to come to the realization that all their concerts were being cancelled for 2020. They were going to do a world tour and everything was canceled due to the vid. So they decided to do back to back albums they had just finished 7 and they thought maybe everyone else was as upset about 2020 as they were. So each of them wrote songs that had very meaningful lyrics about the situation hitting everyone in 2020. The albums name was Be. All the tracks are worth a listen.

  • @sheryl3462
    @sheryl3462 Před 2 lety

Not sure if anyone anyone mentioned this yet but their album BE was a mix of songs they put together to kind of describe what they were feeling because of the world being shut down due to the pandemic and not being able to perform and do their World Tour that was supposed to start after the comeback with MOTS7.

This is my favourite song. It’s a masterpiece. The lyrics (all the sentiments of being in lockdowns during the pandemic and in general out of work). The melody. All the music variants. The bridge. The increasendo after the bridge. And the amazing vocals and raps in every part of the song. A real masterpiece.
